From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
Shortcut:

This page hosts requests to stewards and global renamers for a username change across the entire Wikimedia network. Please read the instructions before posting a request.

This is also the page where the usurpation of inactive accounts can be requested.

Instructions

SUL finalization

[edit]

If you are requesting a merge of a global account with one or more unconnected local accounts as part of finalizing your single unified login (SUL) username, please specify which wikis and accounts you want to merge into your global account. These accounts were typically named "account name~wikiname". Please note that we can only merge a local account into a global account when the global account has no edits on the same wiki as the local account.

How to add an entry here

[edit]

To add an entry, please copy and paste the text below into the appropriate section.

=== Oldname ===
{{SRUC
|status = <!--don't change this line-->
|domain = global
|Oldname =
|Newname =
|reason = (your remarks here)
--~~~~
}}

Example

For global rename requests:

=== Example ===
{{SRUC
|status     = <!--don't change this line-->
|domain     = global
|Oldname    = Example
|Newname    = Foo
|reason     = your remarks here
--~~~~
}}

Making a request for your own account

[edit]

For changing your username on one wiki:

Please include the following information in your request:

  • the old username,
  • the new username,
  • please sign ~~~~ request with your account for a simple move (first section), or sign this request with both the originating and the target accounts if you are requesting a merge (second section).

If anything is missing from your request, a steward will request more information. This helps ensure that you are requesting a rename for your own account. Please check before posting your request that the username you want is available.

You can test that by going to the (new) user page and looking into the sidebar. If there is a link to user contributions, the account already exists, or check via Special:CentralAuth.

Private requests

[edit]

Account renames are not private, once renamed many links from the old username to the new username will be permanently made. The reason submitted on the rename form (Special:GlobalRenameRequest) is private, and only visible by the renamers. Additional information that needs to be made in private may be sent using this direct wiki-email interface while logged-in.

Simple rename requests

[edit]

If your rename request is simple and does not involve usurpation of an existing account or other SUL issues, you have two options:

  1. Use the request form at Special:GlobalRenameRequest; or
  2. Submit the request below in this section.

Please use this tool to check if the username is taken before filing a request.

Requests involving merges, usurps or other complications

[edit]

Please add new requests at the end of the section. Sections should be titled your username and requests should be signed by the requesting user.
Please note: Per standard procedure and consensus, accounts with valid edits are not usurped, and the target account must be notified by renamer at least two weeks before usurpation.

This is an edge case and I would like other renamers to comment. 23 edits (none of which I'd call as vandalism) on one wiki is on the border. Requestor has ~358 edits, so clearly a genuine editor but still relatively new. I'm inclined to accept on the grounds that the last edit by the target account was in 2012 (and all happened on one day). Leaderboard (talk) 18:25, 11 August 2026 (UTC)reply
To be honest they look like minor edits, also some of them are self-reverts, don't think it's an issue to grant the usurp in this case! Superpes15 (talk) 01:00, 12 August 2026 (UTC)reply

{{not done}} Per standard procedure, accounts with valid edits are not usurped. JJPMaster (she/they) 23:44, 18 August 2026 (UTC)reply
@JJPMaster: I'd happily grant this one. The edits are all minor enough and shouldn't be a barrier to the usurpation :) Max (talk) 01:03, 19 August 2026 (UTC)reply
@Max: Sorry if I was a bit confused here; I was under the impression that how minor/major a user's edits are was not the relevant determining criterion for whether those edits will block usurpation; rather, simply the number and nature (legitimate vs. illegitimate) of those edits. JJPMaster (she/they) 01:16, 19 August 2026 (UTC)reply
You're right that legitimacy matters, but this is mostly a case-by-case thing. Text additions matter too, like how much text they actually added and whether it was legitimate. The number of edits matters as well. For example, if there's just a single edit and it's a page creation or a user-uploaded an image, then that's definitely a barrier even if it's just a single edit.
