This page hosts requests to stewards and global renamers for a username change across the entire Wikimedia network. Please read the instructions before posting a request.

This is also the page where the usurpation of inactive accounts can be requested.

Instructions

SUL finalization

If you are requesting a merge of a global account with one or more unconnected local accounts as part of finalizing your single unified login (SUL) username, please specify which wikis and accounts you want to merge into your global account. These accounts were typically named "account name~wikiname". Please note that we can only merge a local account into a global account when the global account has no edits on the same wiki as the local account.

Making a request for your own account

For changing your username on one wiki:

Please include the following information in your request:

  • the old username,
  • the new username,
  • please sign ~~~~ request with your account for a simple move (first section), or sign this request with both the originating and the target accounts if you are requesting a merge (second section).

If anything is missing from your request, a steward will request more information. This helps ensure that you are requesting a rename for your own account. Please check before posting your request that the username you want is available.

You can test that by going to the (new) user page and looking into the sidebar. If there is a link to user contributions, the account already exists, or check via Special:CentralAuth.

Private requests

Account renames are not private, once renamed many links from the old username to the new username will be permanently made. The reason submitted on the rename form (Special:GlobalRenameRequest) is private, and only visible by the renamers. Additional information that needs to be made in private may be sent using this direct wiki-email interface while logged-in.


Simple rename requests

If your rename request is simple and does not involve usurpation of an existing account or other SUL issues, you have two options:

  1. Use the request form at Special:GlobalRenameRequest; or
  2. Submit the request below in this section.

Please use this tool to check if the username is taken before filing a request.

Requests involving merges, usurps or other complications

Shortcut:
USURP

Please add new requests at the end of the section. Sections should be titled your username and requests should be signed by the requesting user.
Please note: Per standard procedure and consensus, accounts with valid edits are not usurped, and the target account must be notified by renamer at least two weeks before usurpation.

E to the Pi times i

Status:    On hold
The target account in question does have 6 undeleted edits on da, but all the edits were part of a set of relatively minor changes that occurred in 2008, so this request seems reasonable enough (at least based on my readings of global rename policy and the related RFC). The only potential complication I see is that the user also apparently created a global account in 2015, but this also means they can certainly object during the one month after notification of the proposed usurption.
I will also note for the purposes of alleviating potential concerns about concealing or obfuscating bad conduct that I do have an active topic-ban on en.WP that was enacted a year ago by the community, and this is not an attempt to evade that; it will be easy enough to note the rename on the editing restrictions page and duly note the old account on my user page if this rename is carried out. --E to the Pi times i (talk) 23:49, 19 April 2019 (UTC)reply
