Revision as of 16:05, 2 October 2025
This is not a vote and any active Wikimedia editor may participate in the discussion.
Global rollback and global interface editor requests require no fewer than 5 days of discussion while abuse filter helper and maintainer requests require no fewer than 7 days. Global renamer and global sysop requests require no fewer than 2 weeks of discussion. For requests that are unlikely to pass under any circumstances, they may be closed by a steward without further discussion (after a reasonable amount of input).

Global rename for DoubleGrazing
- Wiki: meta.wikimedia.org (list 'crats • bot policy • summary • 'crats rights)
- User: DoubleGrazing (talk • edits • logs • UserRights • activity • CentralAuth • email • verify 2FA)
- Not ending before 12:30, 7 October 2025 (UTC)
Hi, I'm DoubleGrazing. I've been an admin on en.wiki for just under a year now, and among other things patrol unblock requests daily. Many of them require renaming, and it would be great if I could deal with those. I also work the 'newly submitted end' of the AfC draft pool, where I see a lot of new accounts with username violations, and again this perm would help in handling them. I would still refer to Stewards if I'm unsure of anything. I don't expect to be doing renames initiated outside of en.wiki. (I have reviewed the global renamers and rename policy pages.) Thanks for reviewing this! — The preceding unsigned comment was added by DoubleGrazing (talk) 12:30, 23 September 2025 (UTC)

- @Ferien I just believe it's a good way to expand one's horizons and see how other communities have different rules and approaches, which I find helpful for any function with global influence, even though renamers follow a rather simple central policy. Global IP Block Exempt for Camelliora (formerly FennelMa)

Global IP block exempt for mmns21
- Global user: mmns21 (edits (alt) • CA • global groups • crossactivity • verify 2FA)
I am requesting global IP block exemption because I often use a VPN for privacy reasons and to access Wikimedia projects from networks that have access restrictions. This necessary use of a VPN frequently results in my IP address being globally blocked. I am an active editor on Serbian Wikipedia and Wikidata. I have a local IP block exemption on the Serbian Wikipedia. Thank you. --Mmns21 (talk) 19:52, 15 August 2025 (UTC)
- Simply wanting to use a VPN is not an exceptional reason, additionally your srwiki ipexemption was revoked locally. What is special about why you are unable to connect to our projects? — xaosflux Talk 20:48, 15 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Xaosflux Thank you for your response. It's not just about the desire to use a VPN; throughout the day, I'm on a network where practically everything is blocked, and the only way to access the internet and Wikipedia is through a VPN service. I also wasn't aware that the local IP block exemption had been revoked; this was essentially a test to see if the problem would be resolved. Additional reasons are privacy and security. Writing even harmless texts that are not to the liking of the authorities can lead to being called in for 'informational interviews.' Fortunately, I haven't had such problems so far. Practically, without using a VPN, I wouldn't be able to use Wikipedia until late afternoon hours, and direct access isn't smart, in my opinion.
- Mmns21 (talk) 21:17, 15 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Xaosflux My IP exemption for sr.wiki is active and I can edit there, but I'm still blocked on Wikidata. Mmns21 (talk) 10:33, 17 August 2025 (UTC)
Global IP block exempt for 物灵
- Global user: 物灵 (edits (alt) • CA • global groups • crossactivity • verify 2FA)
I am Matling. I have previously been granted a local IP block exempt in Chinese Wikipedia and regularly edit there. I need proxies to access Wikimedia projects. In lesser-regulated projects (e.g. Incubator, Wikiversity, Wikipedia in less-known languages), it is not convenient to apply for a local IP block exempt, and a global IP block exempt will help me participate.

I’m editing from mainland China and have to use VPNs.It's hard for me to pay for a VPS.It makes me usually get blocked globally. That’s why I can’t edit normally without some help.I mostly edit Chinese Wikipedia now,but I want to contribute to other languages too in the future(Actually I'm not sure.), like helping with cross-language or other-languge content. So I’m asking for a Global IP block exemption for my account,so I can keep editing without being stopped by IP restrictions. Thanks a lot--HerblandO (talk) 13:34, 13 September 2025 (UTC)

- Could you please explain what kind of task this is that involves extracting article lists from different wikis, and what is the purpose of quickly analysing a large number of pages? If this is only for research, it would be better to use database dumps instead, since using the API can be expensive. – DreamRimmer ■ 06:27, 25 September 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @DreamRimmer, thank you for raising this point. My bot works in two phases:
- Phase one (current stage): It gathers pages without images from arwiki and some other wikis (using database lists), then analyzes them with the API (
prop=images) to identify images on the page. It further checks whether these images are inserted via templates or directly in the wikitext. Based on this, it suggests suitable images to users. - Phase two (future): The bot will automatically suggest images by matching article content with appropriate images from Commons (based on the image title and description).
- Phase one (current stage): It gathers pages without images from arwiki and some other wikis (using database lists), then analyzes them with the API (
- Because the task relies on up-to-date API data (rather than dumps) and involves analyzing a large number of pages efficiently, apihighlimits is needed. Best regards-- Gerges (Talk) 17:08, 25 September 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation. I am curious to know how many wikis you have approval to run such a bot on. I am asking because fetching and analysing a large amount of data in advance can be a waste of resources. This kind of task might be better suited for a Toolforge web app, where a user can provide a list of pages and get suggestions for the best images to use. I assume your bot will generate a report or notify users with suggestions, but human intervention will still be needed to select the best image and add it to the page. I think a web app could handle this more efficiently, but of course, the approach is entirely up to you. – DreamRimmer ■ 17:29, 25 September 2025 (UTC)
- @DreamRimmer, Currently, the task runs only on Arabic Wikipedia, within specific categories related to events. I have not requested formal approval yet, since the bot is still in development and only working in this limited scope. Once the bot is fully ready, I will submit a request for community approval. In the first phase, the bot only prepares suggestions and reports — human editors make the final decision on which images to add. In the second phase, the bot may become more autonomous in proposing suitable images, but always under human supervision and review.A Toolforge web app is indeed a good idea, and I may consider it in the future. However, for now, running it as a bot within the community approval framework ensures transparency and direct integration into the editing workflow. Gerges (Talk) 17:41, 25 September 2025 (UTC)
- @Gerges Wouldn't it be better to get local bot status on ar.wiki (or maybe Commons) as a first step? Or will the API be equally used on all wikis you plan to run the bot on? Leaderboard (talk) 18:01, 25 September 2025 (UTC)

I don't plan to run edits on Wikimedia Commons at this stage, so all I need right now is the "apihighlimits" permission. - @Xaosflux, It won't be a big burden and will most likely exceed API limits in large wikis only. As for small wikis, it won't exceed API limits. I expect it will exceed limits in Commons, enwiki, frwiki, and fewiki. Gerges (Talk) 15:07, 1 October 2025 (UTC)
- @Gerges: Since you said your bot's scope is limited to Arabic Wikipedia for now, would it not be better to request a bot flag or any other local permission that includes the apihighlimits right on Commons? You already have a bot flag on arwiki, so nothing further is needed. At the moment, you are only suggesting images on arwiki sourced from Commons, so these are the only two wikis where you are using the API. – DreamRimmer ■ 15:19, 1 October 2025 (UTC)

Comment You have made only three minor filter changes, two on zhwikivoyage and one on zhwiki, with just one in 2025 and the others in 2023 and 2024. On the Edit filter reporting page you pointed to, you have only three edits from 2022. Neutral We might be too harsh for GAFH request, given that global filters are now truly global and affects many large side projects, I do not see any trust issues here but only less experience from the candidate on filters related area. On the other hand, zhwiki already have few local sysops/AFMs with access to global filters, so it might be probably better to have more communications between them on FP issues. aqurs 🍧 10:29, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
Global CAPTCHA exemptions for SchlurcherBot
- Global user: SchlurcherBot (edits (alt) • CA • global groups • crossactivity • verify 2FA)
I'm currently extending the work of my bot to multiple wikis. Please see User:SchlurcherBot for details. As the envisioned task requires changes to external links, so far, I have been asking for temporary confirmed rights on the corresponding wiki which was always granted but caused delays. I've only now learned about this global right. As I will continue to expand my bot's tasks to new wikis, I expect requests for test edits at these wikis. I'm also requesting this right in preparation for a global bot request (some time soon), in which I expect to be asked for potential test edits on selected wikis as well. Thanks, --Schlurcher (talk) 19:36, 1 October 2025 (UTC)
- Do you plan on running this without discussing with communities first? On most projects your bot is already autoconfirmed, on the projects where it is not - they have active communities and can grant exemptions when authorizing your tests. — xaosflux Talk 21:32, 1 October 2025 (UTC)
- @Xaosflux: I'm not planning on running this without discussion. Actually, I'm planning to 1) request a global bot flag and 2) request at local communities that do not allow global bots. I did not do the research on where my bot is not autoconfirmed due to a minimum number of edits required, but the process to request flags is already painful enough without the requirement to request the confirmed right first. Maybe @Leaderboard can weigh. I've now requested bot flag for the 7 biggest wikis that do not allow global bots. Most bot policies allow to perform a small set of edits at the same time as making the bot request. To do these edits, I had to request confirmed rights 4 times. Only one wiki had a dedicated english translated page for confirmed rights. So I had requested in there. For 2 others, it was granted as part of the bot request for trial with some explanation and back-and-forth. On PT-wiki, see pt:Wikipédia:Robôs/Pedidos_de_aprovação#SchlurcherBot, I had requested it and waited 14 days with no action. Then I Google-translated their local policy and requested it per their policy on the appropriate notice board, where it was finally granted in a couple of days. So there is quite additional overhead usually in languages that I do not speak. Hope this helps for additional background. Pinging bot approvers in my main wiki Commons, @Krd and @EugeneZelenko, in case they want to weigh in on my activity there. --Schlurcher (talk) 07:15, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
- @Schlurcher If you are planning to request a global bot flag, do you need CAPTCHA exemptions as well? Or put it in another way: wouldn't CAPTCHA exemptions be enough since you'll be discussing with the community anyway? But yes, I support the request. My global CAPTCHA request for Leaderbot was denied for flimsy reasons and it did cause unnecessary friction with communities, as I've had to explicitly request confirmed rights on wikis like ja.wiki after initial approval was given since the bot would fail due to a CAPTCHA. Leaderboard (talk) 07:30, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
- Does Global Bot include the Global CAPTCHA excemption? According to Special:ListGroupRights the bot group does contain skipcaptcha. No idea where to find this for global user rights. And if yes, would a global bot flag allow to then to skip captchas for Wikis that do not allow global bots? --Schlurcher (talk) 13:00, 2 October 2025 (UTC)

skipcaptcha, and that the group is limited to the wikis defined by Special:WikiSets/14. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 13:23, 2 October 2025 (UTC) - @Schlurcher As NDKDD said. No, it provides no benefits for wikis that do not allow global bots. Leaderboard (talk) 14:29, 2 October 2025 (UTC)

- Does Global Bot include the Global CAPTCHA excemption? According to Special:ListGroupRights the bot group does contain skipcaptcha. No idea where to find this for global user rights.
