Welcome!

[edit]

The Wikimedia Café provides a forum for voice (optionally inclusive of video) discussion of issues of broad interest among Wikimedia participants.

This month

[edit]

This month's focus will be on the Next 25 initiative, including framing the initiative.

Agenda [Total time: approximately 1 hour]

[edit]
  • Preliminaries
    • 3 minute buffer for late arrivals & microphone checks
    • Self-introductions
    • Café norms
    • Overview of the agenda
  • Main section
  • Presentation. (20 minutes. There may be a follow-up in a later Café session.)
  • Drop in search engine traffic, and associated readership, contributor recruiting, and fundraising
  • There is related work happening regarding external attribution
  • Will Wikipedia in its current format (as a flagship) be viable in a few years?
  • Other threats: hallucinated references, poorly generated articles, fewer trustworthy news sources as the news industry consolidates. Increased ease of bad behavior: a) producing faked secondary sources and primary sources (fake news, fake archives); b) automating hostile activities (abuse and socking); c) falsifying Commons media
  • The goal is for Wikimedia to survive the next 25 years, but there are not 25 years to figure this out. The window of opportunity is 1-3 years.
  • We want to accelerate the speed of experimentation, and of decision-making. This is proposed as the first priority. See A proposal to frame Next 25.
  • After or in parallel with accelerating decision-making, focus on what changes are needed + feasible within 3 years.
  • Discussion (25 minutes)
  • Is the 3-year estimate of opportunity correct?
  • What could be done to accelerate decision making in the next few months?
  • In the era of AI where no one leaves their preferred reference tool, is text-heavy Wikipedia saveable, and if so, should it be saved?
  • What is the viability of other projects such as Commons, Wikidata, Wikisource, and Wiktionary?
  • What innovations are needed and achievable in the next 3 years to support viability of the Wikiverse for the next 25 years?
  • Would having multiple working groups be feasible for parallel execution on elements of Next 25?
  • Next steps & closure ← (5 minutes)

How to attend the session

[edit]

If you would like to attend then please sign below at least 30 minutes before the start of the session. A Google Meet link will be emailed to you before the start of the session, using Special:EmailUser.

  • Before the scheduled start time of the Café, please verify that you can successfully use Google Meet.
  • To improve the chances of Café meetings being valuable and positive experiences for intermediate to advanced participants:
    1. A prerequisite for attending the Café is that your Wikimedia account has 500 or more edits on a single wiki with an account that made its first contribution 30 or more days ago, consistent with English Wikipedia's policy for extendedconfirmed group membership. You may fulfill this requirement on any Wikimedia project.
    2. Your account must have no active blocks visible in Special:CentralAuth. Waivers to this requirement may be granted if you can make a convincing case to User:Pine for an exception, such as if the block was self-requested.
    3. Having at least beginner knowledge of the English language is helpful, but feel free to attend and simply listen if your English is too limited for you to feel comfortable speaking it. Additionally, you are welcome to use text translation tools to post translated text into the meeting chat.

Meeting conduct & disclaimer

[edit]
  • Café sessions are not usually recorded in full, but anyone can take & share notes.
  • Civility is expected in the Café, although expressions of strong opinions may happen. If a conversation becomes too acrimonious then the hosts may end discussion of that topic, require certain participants to leave a Café session, or take other measures to keep order in the Café.
  • Wikimedia Café sessions are not officially endorsed, supervised, or directly financially sponsored by the Wikimedia Foundation. The Café sessions receive limited support in the sense that announcements and other communications may be hosted on infrastructure that is owned by the Wikimedia Foundation. Staff, contractors, grantees, or trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation may be guests in Café sessions. Opinions and statements made in Café sessions might not represent those of the Wikimedia Foundation.
