How to attend the March 2026 session

[edit]

If you would like to attend then please sign below at least 1 hour before the start of the session. A Google Meet link will be emailed to you before the start of the session, using Special:EmailUser.

  • If you sign up near or after the start time of the session then the hosts might not have time to send a meeting link to you for the session.
  • Before the scheduled start time of the Café, please verify that you can successfully connect to Google Meet.
  • Attending the Café requires that the participating Wikimedia account has 500 or more edits on a single wiki with an account that is 30 or more days old (consistent with English Wikipedia's policy for extendedconfirmed group membership), and no active blocks visible in Special:CentralAuth. If your account does not currently meet these requirements then please fulfill these first. After your account meets these requirements, you may sign up for a Café session. Thanks.

  • Hello, the Scott_WUaS account has very few global edits, and the associated user page was deleted. I will not send an invitation to that account. If you are a genuine user than please sign up to attend with an account that has a credible record of constructive contributions. Thanks. ↠Pine () 04:21, 23 February 2026 (UTC)reply

@Pine I somehow missed the session due to not noticing the reminder. Could you let me.know if notes were taken and if so how to get the same? Kaartic [talk] 02:02, 8 March 2026 (UTC)reply
Didn't have time and didn't check if I could free time because I thought it was a later date so would like notes too if that's possible. Prototyperspective (talk) 22:43, 8 March 2026 (UTC)reply

Meeting notes

[edit]
  • Funding options
  • Google Summer of Code, which has been done repeatedly for the Android app for Commons
  • GSoC's primary purpose is supporting interns, not necessarily producing a minimum viable product. Interns may require so much teaching time from experienced devs that supporting the intern may not be an overall benefit to the project within the scope of GSoC.
  • Consider having a plan for retaining an intern who did well in GSoC, for funding them beyond the end of the GSoC program
  • Also consider how to retain valuable volunteer developers who may not have been part of GSoC or another internship program. Could some funding be made available to retain them?
  • Hubs
  • Consider reapplying for a Rapid Grants. Maybe submit to get WMF Product to consider the issue formally, rather than trying to have less structured conversations with the WMF Director of Product
  • WMF currently doesn't fund tech projects through general support grants
  • WMF Annual Plan, directly as contract or employee work
  • Wiki Med has some software funding through a WMF general support grant, but for that to happen there needs to be an organization, or maybe join into that group's general grants. Example: photographer user groups
  • Pine could ask WMDE people for introductions to their people who work on grants & fiscal sponsorships
  • Kickstarter, maybe specifically for iOS app
  • There are restrictions in Google and Apple stores regarding taking in money through the apps
  • WMF may have restrictions on fundraising through apps that are running under their developer accounts
  • Funding web: future Café topic; amount of administrative overhead time spent searching for, applying to, and reporting on projects.
  • Can we expand the use cases for the app?
  • Map-based
  • Wiki Med: expanding # of formats of video that can be uploaded into Commons
  • For Apple version of app: convert automatically from HEIC to JPG/PNG
  • Ability to scrub the geolocation data, after a photo has been uploaded.
  • If the app makes uploading video easier; would need iOS support $80K is much more than Wiki Med can support, but could it be chunked up?
  • Frank Schulenburg at Wiki Ed is interested in photography. James has sent an email regarding the Commons app
