Wikisource Bootcamp 2025

The Wikisource Bootcamp organised by Free Knowledge Africa present a series of training on editing on Wikisource, from importing public domain works on Wikisource, transcribing pages, proofreading, validating, and transcluding them.

Activities

1 Introduction to Wikisource: Basic Editing Skills
  • Orientation Session
  • Hands on training on how to edit and format texts on Wikisource
  • Introduction to copyright and public domain
Participants will be able to edit basic texts and understand the importance of public domain Basic editing tasks like fixing formatting errors
2 Advanced Editing Techniques: Including OCR and digitization
  • Training on Optical Character Recognition (OCR) tools
  • Hands on session on digitizing texts
Participants will be able to use OCR toolds and digitize texts accurately Digitize a set number of pages using OCR
3 Completion of a Significant digitization project, Recognition and Certification
  • Final editing and quality checks
  • Presentation of completed works
Participants will have contributed to a sustantial digitization project and receive a certificate Complete a full newspaper/book digitization

  1. Sign in or Create a new account on Wikipedia
  2. Enroll on the Free Knowledge Africa's Program Outreach Dashboard to track your contributions.
  3. Sign up in the Participants section of this page
  4. Attend the 3 weeks trainings hosted on Zoom. Join the Whatsapp community for more information and assistance during the contest

Jury Process

In order to ensure transparency and fairness, scoring in this competition will be quantitative, keeping in mind that all indexes must meet Wikisource standards for importing, transcribing, proofreading, validating and transcluding. Any index or contribution may be disqualified at the judges’ discretion

  • Proofreading a page attracts three (3) points
  • Validating a page attracts one (1) point
