Meeting Summary

[edit]
  • The previous meeting minutes were ratified by 2 members on the call.
  • Fiscal Sponsors 2025/2026
    • HJ commented that there were no new developments regarding Wiscom, as the Foundation has not approved the budget yet.
    • IT gave an update on user Group Botswana. The Chapter’s payment process is completed, and we are waiting for confirmation from the user group that the money is reflecting in their account.
    • IT commented that the WikiIndaba payment is also completed and similarly, we are waiting on confirmation that the money is reflecting on their side.
  • IT gave a brief update on the upcoming Public Libraries Seminar (03-04 September 2025). All is on track, and 2 members per day will be present at the Wikimedia booth. IT mentioned that she and JP would set up the day before and she will also attend the opening on the evening of 02/09/2025. The event anticipates about 400 attendees per day.
  • HJ gave a brief overview of the MOU signed between WMZA and the Afrikaans Akademie. Going forward, the Afrikaans Akademie will remain permanently on the Agenda, in order to share updates from the Afrikaans community with the Chapter and vice versa. Unfortunately, the Afrikaans Akademie was not in attendance, but they should be represented in the Operations Meetings going forward. Members voice their support for the initiative being set in motion as it is beneficial to all parties.
  • HJ and ME gave a brief update on the August Chapter Meetups in JHB and CT. HJ mentioned that one of the key discussion points centered around activating youth, which was highlighted in Wikimania. Further to this, RR gave a brief overview on the Wikimania Users with Extended Rights pre-conference workshop. DS suggested emailing his editors list bi-yearly regarding their possible interest in Meetups. DS also suggested using geofence banner ads, which the Foundation could assist the Chapter with, to help reach a bigger localised editing audience.
  • The photographic content agenda item will be carried over to the next meeting, when BS is present.
  • HJ gave an overview and an update of the WMZA Project and Events review. The review has been completed and applicants will receive feedback before the end of August. The second round of calls should begin early October.
  • IN provided a communications update. Wikimedia Foundation and the chapter are making progress with the short form video interviews, which will be ready for Heritage Day. Post-Wikimania interviews are progressing after a small delay. A lot more is to come on the Chapter’s social media pages.
  • Members voted in favour of Action Minutes for Operations Meetings going forward.
  • HJ listed the events occurring in September. These include the Public Libraries seminar, SWiP workshops, Meetups, the Goethe African Feminism Symposium and the LIASA Conference. Furthermore, we will engage with the board around new applications/partnerships which were put on hold, pending the Projects and Events review. Lastly, the Chapter will host an Edit-a-thon at the Goethe Institute on 01/09/2025, as part of the upcoming International Translation Day.
