Meeting Summary

[edit]
  • The previous meeting minutes were ratified by 3 members present.
  • There were no new updates for Wiscom. Updates will follow when the fiscal manager joins the next operations meeting.
  • There were no new updates for user group Botswana. Updates will follow when the fiscal manager joins the next operations meeting.
  • IT gave a brief update on WikiIndaba. Everything is on track and going well, with weekly meetings now occurring. The payment tracker has been set up, with no payments disbursed yet. Programme acceptances will be released in the coming week and there are tight deadlines for the self-sponsorhip process.
  • IT gave an update on the past LIASA Conference. IT mentioned that SWiP was mentioned all through the conference. There was however no time allocated for questions to presenters. The conference was well attended.
  • The Photographic content at Workshops item is carried over to the next meeting, when Bobby Shabangu attends.
  • The WMZA Project and Events discussion is carried over to the next meeting, when Bobby Shabangu attends.
  • HJ gave an update on the Goethe African Feminism Symposium. HJ participated in the panel discussion as the WMZA nominee cancelled at the last minute. This impacted the planned WMZA Editing Workshop which HJ was running on day two. KM commented that she attended the conference and she was disappointed by the poor turnout and participation. Furthermore the conference had a Eurocentric perspective and did not cater for African languages. Aside from HJ’s valuable input on the panel around African languages, there was nothing tangible pertaining to African Feminism per se. KM also commented that the main contributions from an African perspective came from Mozambique and one other African country.
  • HJ gave an update on new Projects/Events Partnerships which were pending following the finalisation of first Projects and Event Review. There were six potential partnerships which were communicated to the board for review. Further communication around these partnerships will be shared with the community in the coming months. Responding to ML, HJ remarked that submissions for Projects/Events occur twice a year, however a submission can be sent to WMZA at any time for deliberation, outside of that cycle.
  • HJ gave a brief communications update. HJ mentioned the new engagement process via email to boost Johannesburg Meetup numbers, which will run for a 6 months trial period. The Chapter has shortlisted 6 applicants for the Communications internship, with a further update to follow. ML and KM commented on the positive effect a personalised email has had on them as Chapter members. KM enquired about an editing portion during Meetups which she finds beneficial. HJ commented that this can be done, however the time spent on discussions must be managed better.
  • HJ has been selected as part of the communications sub-committee for WikiDebates. HJ will share links to this effect. KM also highlighted the issue of language at the Goethe African Feminism Symposium which did not cater for African languages.
  • The meeting was adjourned.
