This report outlines the accomplishments and activities of the Wikimedia Fulfulde Community between March 2025 and September 2025. Guided by our strategic objectives for the year, our primary focus was on advancing gender equity, supporting our regional network, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of our community hubs across North East Nigeria. Through purposeful capacity-building workshops and localized campaigns, our volunteers have continued to expand the horizons of free knowledge in the Fulfulde language, bringing a wealth of diverse perspectives to the global movement.

2025 Programs and Campaigns

The Wikimedia Fulfulde Community drove meaningful growth and deepened its impact across North East Nigeria throughout 2025. The structured breakdown of our major programs and campaigns is highlighted below:

Wiki Loves Africa 2025 Campaign in North East Nigeria (March, 2025 - April, 2025)

Kicking off our programs for the year, the Wiki Loves Africa 2025 campaign ran from March to April across North East Nigeria. This annual contest mobilized local photographers, cultural documentarians, and editors to capture and contribute rich media assets celebrating African heritage.

The Fulfulde community hosted localized activation sessions to guide volunteers through the upload processes on Wikimedia Commons. This campaign significantly enhanced the visual documentation of regional narrative styles and cultural expressions, making authentic media accessible to the wider global audience.

Wikimedia Fulfulde Community Half-Yearly Activities (April, 2025 - September, 2025)

As outlined in our activity plan and grant application, our half-yearly activities for this period focused heavily on regular capacity-building workshops. We directed our efforts toward bringing in new female editors, engaging participants from diverse backgrounds, and driving the overall growth and sustainability of our established Hubs and Fan Clubs.

To make our trainings as impactful as possible, each workshop was built around a specific theme, requiring editors to focus on and create articles within that scope by the end of the session. We also decentralized our operations, distributing activities across the regions where the majority of our members reside.

Structuring for Diversity and Inclusion

Over this six-month project period, we successfully hosted a total of 7 events, balancing safe physical spaces and digital accessibility with 5 physical events and 2 online events:

  • Four (4) Capacity Building Workshops: These events targeted our four established Fan Clubs and Hubs. They were designed to boost the technical skills of our existing community members while ensuring geographic inclusivity and diversity.
  • Three (3) Female Recruitment Trainings: These sessions were explicitly dedicated to onboarding new female editors. In alignment with our mission to bridge the contributor gender gap, we focused on engaging as many Fula women as possible. Our goal remains to empower women in the community to display their talents, amplify their voices, and ensure the Fulfulde community stands proudly alongside larger Wikimedia movements.

Empowering through Infrastructure

A major cornerstone of our sustained success during this project was our Volunteer Internet Data Support initiative. Designed to support active editors-particularly those who face financial barriers to buying data-this program played an essential role in boosting participant morale. By removing internet access roadblocks, we were not only able to maintain high engagement throughout the six months but also successfully welcomed back and retained a good number of editors who had long been inactive due to a lack of technical confidence or internet connectivity.
