Wiki Workers United (WWU) is a global solidarity union for the staff of the Wikimedia Foundation. WWU represents the people who build and maintain the platform and services that enable the Wikimedia communities to create and share Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects with the world.
WWU is forming a union to collaborate with management to make the Wikimedia Foundation better, both for its staff and for the Wikimedia movement communities it serves. The union is guided by the principle of nothing about us without us.
The union does not advocate directly for or speak on behalf of our communities. Community power belongs in community hands.
Approach
[edit]WWU describes itself as global-first: the goal is an international union representing all WMF workers regardless of location or contract type. There is no mechanism to form an international union directly. There are two open requests for union recognition in the United States and the United Kingdom (through its Employer of Record) as of 20 July 2026.
WWU emphasises that a union need not be in constant opposition to management. The aim is collaborative, goal-oriented problem solving as the foundation of its partnership with WMF leadership.
Focus areas
[edit]WWU's stated focus areas include:
- Improving transparency and accountability from WMF leadership toward both staff and movement communities
- Ensuring staff have effective ways to provide input on policy changes and annual planning while decisions are still being deliberated
- Preventing unclear or inconsistent hiring, firing, and promotion practices
- Guaranteeing the ability to safely express dissent
- Advocating for mental health support for frontline workers who interact directly with movement communities
- Advocating for pay and benefits equity
- Holding management accountable to commitments made to staff
