You have blocked an IP range and I am affected
[edit]Hello MdsShakil, when I am trying to edit Wikidata or the english Wikipedia, I get the message:
"The IP address or range 170.85.2.0/24 has been globally blocked by MdsShakil for the following reason(s): Open proxy: See the help page if you are affected"
I cannot see why this IP range was blocked, but I am not a vandal. I am very active in German Wikipedia, have written 1300 articles and have an edit count of 130,000 without ever been blocked. I also have written a "mail to Steward"... Can you please have a look? Best regards. --Schotterebene (talk) 11:29, 4 April 2026 (UTC)
- I, too am impacted. It used to only impact logged out editing on enwiki, but seems to be impacting logged in edits as well now. I wonder what changed, because the global rangeblock log shows it was put in place in october. ill try and get an ip block exemption, however. Aunva6 (talk) 21:08, 7 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Aunva6, Schotterebene: Your IP has been blocked because it is part of a proxy network. Please turn off the proxy, and you will be able to edit. If you believe you have a valid reason to use one, please apply for a global IP block exemption at SRGP. —MdsShakil (talk) 03:42, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
- I am in the same situation, I use a corporate laptop with Zscaler application and I cannot disable it. My IP is visibly owned by Zscaler; I don't understand what does it make a "open proxy". I opened a procedure of appeal on UTRS 3, it was denied and I was redirected to ask for a local exception, but local Wikipedia procedure requires to edit a Wikipedia page to request the exception, which I cannot do as I am blocked...--Marcel Bergeret (talk) 12:51, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Marcel Bergeret You were redirected to the local wiki because you only edited itwiki. Requesting an IP block exemption only via on-wiki edits while you are blocked does not make any sense, there should be other ways as well. I have added global IP block exemption to your account for one week. You can now edit and request a local IP block exemption. —MdsShakil (talk) 13:48, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks MdsShakil, I have just requested an exception on it.wiki. Side question: when a range of IP is considered "open proxy"? Why Zscaler is involved (see @Schotterebene message earlier in this talk)? Marcel Bergeret (talk) 08:17, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Marcel Bergeret You can learn about proxies here. We usually use ProxyCheck.io and Spour to determine whether a network is a proxy. —MdsShakil (talk) 11:28, 14 April 2026 (UTC)
- same comment as everyone else it seems. I use a corporate laptop with Zscaler application and I cannot disable it. I don't understand what I should be blocked becasue of that. Etiennesturm (talk) 16:43, 13 June 2026 (UTC)
- @MdsShakil,
- when I am trying to edit Wikidata or the english Wikipedia, I get the same message and I dont know why. I edit a company page due to a merger and the text also didnt change to the newest version. The next thing I was blocked. Is it possible to unblock me, so I can edit the page. ALTENMWIKI (talk) 09:32, 20 July 2026 (UTC)
- @ALTENMWIKI Can you please share with us more details about the blocks, perhaps using the Wizard, we unable to help without the further details. —MdsShakil (talk) 09:35, 20 July 2026 (UTC)
- Hey @MdsShakil, the reason for the blocking was that I use open proxies but I dont do that. One thing that is possible is, I work from my company computer and we are a security company so maybe there is a problem. I will try to edit later from my personal computer. Maybe this will help to deal with the problem. ALTENMWIKI (talk) 10:30, 20 July 2026 (UTC)

Organized Labour September Editing Event
[edit]
You're invited to join the Organized Labour community editing event, a cross-wiki event taking place throughout September 2026!
The campaign brings together Wikimedians interested in improving coverage of organised labour, workers, trade unions, and labour history. We have confirmed collaborations with Wikipedia language editions in English, Dutch, Persian, Serbo-Croatian and French. If you want to add other language editions or other wiki projects you are strongly encouraged to do so! This event spans geography and languages!
This is a one-time invitation. You're receiving it because you previously signed a petition related to Wiki Workers United (WWU). We hope you'll join us!
