[edit]Hi again. I'm sorry for not replying yet, but I'm trying to figure out all the details. PiRSquared17 (talk) 03:13, 10 August 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks, πr2. I'm happy to have your help.
- I finally realized why I always see you around the other projects. It's because your always involved in the technical side of things. On a related note, do you know how the Interwiki map stuff works from a technical standpoint? I remember when wmfblog: was added to the map. It took about 3 months after the addition before that link would work for me. I figured it had something to do with me being an IP. So I was wondering how the map worked. So when I click toollabs: it brings me to this page. If it's like the wmfblog: link, it'll probably work for me in about 3 months or so. Do you know the technical side of the Interwiki map? Thanks again for all your help. 64.40.54.169 03:29, 10 August 2013 (UTC)
- I just found some stuff at mw:Extension:InterwikiMap, so I'm reading through it. 64.40.54.169 03:45, 10 August 2013 (UTC)
- (edit conflict!) Hello. I have indeed been very active with technical things recently. Maybe because of the huge VE/ULS reaction, as I think I've already mentioned. Here is a comment, taken from the publicly logged (see [23:00:12]) IRC channel #mediawiki on freenode today, when someone (User:Bawolff) was explaining the details to me:
- <bawolff> PiRSquared: We have a maintenance script (in the WikimediaMaintiance extension repo) that generates interwikis for all wikimedia projects and different language codes, and adds the m:Interwiki_map on top of that, to make a single cdb file, that is used for all Wikimedia sites. (The cdb file supports different wiki families having different interwikis for different language codes)
- There's more information on the top of IWM and its talk page, and on w:WP:IW (which is very similar to Help:Interwiki linking here). Maybe this is the specific maintenance script, but I'm not sure. According to the header of IWM, it is updated "fairly regularly (usually once in several months)". I personally wouldn't expect an update right now anyway, asa most of the (staff) devs are in Hong Kong, but it might be on a cron job. As for wmflabs specifically, I think that a bug similar to bugzilla:24748 would apply in this case. I was thinking of using my wmflabs account to host a redirector to prevent adding all those wmflabs subdomains, but most are very obscure anyway. PiRSquared17 (talk) 04:04, 10 August 2013 (UTC)
- And, P.S. (after edit conflict): mw:Extension:InterwikiMap is not used on Wikimedia. If you want the details you can read the log link above, starting around 23:00, or mw:Manual:Interwikis.
- TL;DR - a maintenance script updates it every few months
- Aaaah. Thanks. I don't know any of the technical stuff, which is why I try to follow it (i.e. so I can learn). I spent the last hour reading through all the extension stuff and some of the API stuff too. :/ Oh well.
- I guess I should just read the top of the pages I keep skipping over. My mistake. Thanks for the update. 64.40.54.169 04:56, 10 August 2013 (UTC)
- (adding) Lots of great links. I've been reading through them and learning some good stuff. Thanks.
- re: the Interwiki map, toollabs: is the big one with the migration from the toolserver to WMFLabs. I'm not sure how important the other ones are. Maybe dashboard.wmflabs.org as I've seen that one a few times but the others are so obscure that I'm not sure they'd be used by anybody. So I'm not sure if setting up a redirector would be worth the trouble. The reason I like the interwiki links is because I get the CAPTCHA for URLs because I'm an IP, so the interwikis save me from that. Thanks again for all the help. 64.40.54.169 06:06, 10 August 2013 (UTC)
