Talk:Migration of Wikinews and future hosts

Why this page

[edit]

There have been many scattered discussions across various Wikinews language editions regarding migration and future hosting. I have created this central page to bring these discussions together in one place and to allow communities to continue their discussions after May 4, when Wikinews sites become read-only. -- Asked42 (talk · contribs) 15:03, 31 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Resources for a migration

[edit]

I don't have opinions on whether to migrate but I have two quick suggestions.

  1. Look for help from others with experience migrating large wikis. mw:Manual:Grabbers were developed to migrate Wikia wikis to independent hosts.
  2. Think of governance early and do not reinvent the wheel. Especially if there's an intention to reuse Wikimedia trademarks, it's probably best to reuse an existing entity with experience in sort of things. The entity hosting the project assets does not need to be the same as the entity providing internet hosting. An obvious choice would be Software for the Public Interest https://www.spi-inc.org/ given we have history with them and they already host translatewiki.net. It would be a good complement for Miraheze on the technical side.

language editions

[edit]

Whichever host ends up as the new home, would each wiki have a separate import or would they be part of the same multilingual wiki separated by e.g. namespaces? Arlo Barnes (talk) 19:25, 2 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

The second option is definitely much more preferable. Or maybe I misunderstood the question. I thought first option means something like "all editions are completely independent and should manage their hosting/imports/funding/etc by themselves only". @Arlo Barnes & Well very well I suggest to list all of the current opening *.wikinews.org editions, and maybe recommend specific sections to have well-written translations to help non-English speakers as well as possible. ~2026-20532-83 (talk) 06:21, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
At the moment per Wikinews#Wikinews Statistics, I boldly added French, Polish, Portuguese, Serbian (as they have top 5 number of articles together with Russian), and Italian (one of those with top 5 number of edits), and Spanish (one of those with top 5 number of administrators, though, just 9), and German (one of those with top 5 number of local files, :P) ~2026-20532-83 (talk) 06:27, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Clarification: WM NYC and Miraheze joint bid and requests on Miraheze

[edit]

Hello all, as mentioned on Meta-wiki, WM NYC and Miraheze representatives are in joint discussions with WMF on a potential bid for an approved revival of the Wikinews projects with permission to utilize the same name and branding.

While the community's enthusiasm for saving the project is appreciated and understood (hell, I've saved a project from the Fandom memory-hole myself), Miraheze will not approve any new project requests from individuals (especially those who are not admins or crats on the language-specific WN projects) until we have clear and full signoff from the WMF.

Thank you for your patience while discussions are ongoing.
