Chinese Wikipedia Arbitration Wiki

Interwiki request: new

Status:    Done
wikidata status:   In progress

wikipedia-zh-arbcom is a Wikimedia project for zhwiki arbcom. In arbitration work, cross-wiki links have to be provided often; while the Interwiki map will be extremely beneficial and helpful to us.

arbcom-zh is also the name of the VRT queue. Thanks! ZhaoFJx(T) 17:46, 1 January 2026 (UTC)

Thank you :-) ZhaoFJx(T) 22:56, 4 January 2026 (UTC)
Can it be added locally on zhwiki? It's unlikely this wiki will be linked elsewhere. --Srapoj (talk) 21:06, 5 January 2026 (UTC)
Is the prefix likely to be used for something else globally? —Locke Coletc 22:03, 5 January 2026 (UTC)
The current way this page works it isn't technically possible to limit links to one wiki. And, well, I agree with Locke Cole, there' no conflict with anything else so no need to. * Pppery * it has begun 01:04, 6 January 2026 (UTC)

Please add doc explaining lang prefix usage

The page does have this allusion to the possibility of linking foreign language examples, but it is not intuitive:

Language codes and short forms of project codes (en:, es:, w:, c:, etc.) are handled automatically and do not need to be added here...

Something does need to be added here, as creating a foreign language project code is non-intuitive; especially for non-wikimedia sister projects like Fandom. I am not advocating adding anything to the table, but I am proposing a new, non-tabular description section explaining how to form the correct Interwiki to a foreign language site, when you know the English one. For example, I needed the Spanish Fandom site for which we have prefix FinalFantasy and target url 'https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/$1' in the table.

So, I already know my target urls for the Spanish ones (examples: https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/es/wiki/Final_Fantasy_XIII, and https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/es/wiki/Serah_Farron) so how do we reverse engineer the proper prefix? As someone who can use prefixes in my sleep and has been involved in writing and documenting en:Template:Interlanguage link (and creating it at nl-wiki), I can tell you this was no easy task. The perhaps first choice, for someone familiar with such things, would be: es:FinalFantasy:Final Fantasy XIII. Whoops! No go. I see why; that is of course, the Spanish Wikipedia prefix, so wrong place for the 'es' bit.

I won't tell you how many guesses and permutations I tried, before I hit upon these as the correct formulations:

Switching prefixes to see if this works with another Fandom site, I tried these:

Result: there is no Indonesian site, so that 404s. Other than that, they all work, redirecting locally from Darth_Vader to Anakin_Skywalker (except the French Fandom, which unaccountably has no redirect, so soft 404s, but they do have the Anakin_Skywalker page, and Wookieepedia:fr:Anakin Skywalker goes to it).

This suggests a pattern for how to generate the proper Interwiki, given the existing table:

[[InterwikiPrefix:LangPrefix:ArticleTitle]]

where 'InterwikiPrefix' is col 1 in the table, and 'LangPrefix' is... not really sure; most likely the ISO 639-2 code (and likely not the Wiki code, which however overlaps 639-2 to a very great degree and as such may be indistinguishable from it in the much more limited Fandom language edition set).

I have not tried to generalize beyond the two Fandom sites to others, so don't know if it extends to them; guessing it does for some, and not for others. Depending how that breaks down, if there are a great many that do support language prefix and also a great many that do not, I would suggest having a third, very narrow column in the table, with a boolean, just saying Y/N it supports the lang prefix. If it is very lopsided (almost all do, or almost all do not) then I would suggest just keeping the two-column table, and use a named explanatory note[a] that would identify the minority case, i.e., "This prefix supports/does not support language edition prefixes; see [[#SectionName|§ SectionName]] for details.".

Can someone please add a documentation section to the page explaining lang prefix usage (note the overlap in table col header 'prefix' which might need a longer label), and also a third column, if warranted? Any explanation will also have to mention how in Wikimedia sister projects, the lang prefix goes first (or else, explain it as the default project prefix 'Wikipedia' being elided, just as 'Main:' is elided for article namespace, so the second element, namely the lang prefix, appears first when project is the default Wikipedia project). Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 22:52, 18 January 2026 (UTC)

@Mathglot: If you were to inspect the finalfantasy:es:Serah Farron link using your browser's web development tools, you would see that the URL is https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/es:Serah_Farron. That is to say, only the first colon-separated part is handled by Meta's MediaWiki instance; the rest are processed by the target site. This resolution logic also applies to our sites. For example, wikt:fr: links to https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/fr: rather than https://fr.wiktionary.org/wiki/. You will have to check the target wiki's configurations and/or help pages (like this one by Fandom) to know how they deal with interlanguage links. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 23:24, 18 January 2026 (UTC)

Highly used URL with more than 25,000 uses in Meta-wiki alone. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Anohthterwikipedian (talk) 01:37, 20 February 2026 (UTC)

Criteria evaluation:
  1. be useful on a significant number of pages
    YesY Many usages across wikis.
  2. provide clear and relevant use to the Wikimedia projects, including the purpose of the site
YesY Many users host their code on GitHub. Plus, the URL formats are generally wikilink-friendly.
  3. be trusted not to encourage spam links being added to the Wikimedia projects
    YesY Probably.
  4. not contain malware
Question? Being a host for user-generated content, GitHub does contain malware, but those are in the minority, and the domain is not blacklisted anywhere. GitHub itself might have trackers, but I think that's not too much of a disqualifying factor.
  5. be expected to remain working for a long time in the future and not suffer from link rot
YesY GitHub is a big site by one of the biggest corporations.
I'm in favor of adding, but let's leave this around for a while. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 05:19, 20 February 2026 (UTC)

Proposed addition of all short-form interwikis

I suggest updating the Interwiki map/list with [Edit:Updated-link] these sandbox-changes (current-version before/after).

  • TLDR: Adding the "c, d, f, m" (etc) and placing them just above their existing defaults. All in lowercase to match established norms.
  • Goal: Make it so that Parsoid automatically uses the short-form when it converts pasted rich-text. This is important because it often relates to newsletters/mass-messages, and we shouldn't use the long-form of interwiki shortcuts for those use-cases, because they often conflict with the local Project: namespace name. (I.e. Links to [[Wikidata:Wikidata:Sandbox will work properly at all other projects in a massmessage, but are a local-redlink at Wikidata itself.)
  • This would match User:Krinkle's change in this edit last year (which successfully fixed these interwiki links in places like Tech News when content is pasted into Visualeditor).

I'm not aware of any concerns, but I might be missing something(s). Quiddity (talk) 22:29, 4 April 2026 (UTC)

This doesn't work because "b:" has a context-sensitive meaning. "b:" on French Wikipedia points to French Wikibooks whereas your change would have it point to English Wikibooks everywhere. * Pppery * it has begun 23:42, 4 April 2026 (UTC)
@Pppery Ah, rightright, thank you. -- I've fixed the proposal and diff-link in my post above, to only include single-multilingual projects. Quiddity (talk) 00:28, 5 April 2026 (UTC)
Hmm ... the source of truth for the order of interwiki links seems to be phab:source/mediawiki-config/browse/master/wmf-config/interwiki.php#L395. Wouldn't it make more sense to fix the script processing the list to put the short forms first if you want that ... * Pppery * it has begun 01:51, 7 April 2026 (UTC)
Done that in gerrit:1268296, which I think is easier to reason about/make sure doesn't cause unintented consequences than the change you proposed. For instance right now on the Beta Cluster "c:" goes to Beta Commons whereas if you were to add it the this list it would go to prod commons instead. People may not care, but I'd rather be sure. * Pppery * it has begun 02:00, 7 April 2026 (UTC)

SWMT Wiki

Status:    Not done

A newly created wiki for SWMT members. Already available at toolforge:swmtwiki/, but that's a little too long. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 02:42, 22 March 2026 (UTC)

This request seems premature to me. I'd rather wait for things to settle a bit rather than add a site whose main page is still displaying "MediaWiki on Toolforge has been installed". But of course you're an admin and can do as you see fit. * Pppery * it has begun 03:21, 22 March 2026 (UTC)
@Pppery: Wouldn’t that technically be considered a supervote, as that is a decision vetted by no one else?
Anohthterwikipedian (talk) 19:56, 22 March 2026 (UTC)
@NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh: Currently, every single page except for the Main Page is restricted for regular users, which would be fine except that includes the legal disclaimers and your own talk page. I highly suggest waiting until the wiki’s more usable. Anohthterwikipedian (talk) 21:13, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
@NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh is there documentation on this tool? I don't see it on the list of toolforge projects, the about page has nothing on it, etc. Are you the tool owner here? — xaosflux Talk 21:46, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
Hmm per this page looks like this is a @DreamRimmer: project. — xaosflux Talk 21:48, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
Thanks for the ping. I wasn't aware of this discussion. This wiki was requested by several SWMT members, so it's not solely my project. It was created recently, and the necessary pages are still being developed, so I think the interwiki link can be added later, though I don't have a strong opinion either way. – DreamRimmer 01:24, 24 March 2026 (UTC)
But I'm with Pppery, this seems a bit premature at this point. Not sure why we need a fishbowl for a meta-project on toolforge at all either? — xaosflux Talk 21:50, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
@Xaosflux: The intention is for it to become a who's who of LTAs where en:WP:DENY doesn't apply. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 22:26, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
Seems like that could have been a SUL fishbowl, not a privately managed project (and also seems to be what checkuserwiki primarily does) - but my "premature" here is that this isn't a core wiki, it is a private volunteer project that doesn't seem to be in production yet. — xaosflux Talk 22:28, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
If you can move it into SUL, be my guest. True, the wiki isn't in working state yet, but it's not like I'm abusing my adminship to add the interwiki prefix all on my own. This is merely a proposal. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 22:44, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
Sorry, I didn't mean "SUL fishbowl" that's not a thing, I just meant a normal foundation hosted project instead of something where volunteers have to sysadmin the entire thing on toolforge. That process is basically: (a) have a discussion somewhere that a new "fishbowl" wiki is needed; (b) open a phab task for it (recent example is phab:T330390). — xaosflux Talk 23:19, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
Okay, let's rethink this a few months later. I'm not a member of SWMT (and don't want to be one), but we've added interwiki links to tools used by small groups of Wikimedia users before: acc: arbcom-zh: etc. I don't buy Xaosflux's claim that the wiki not being in production is disqualifying - if you later move to productionize the link can easily by updated So, assuming the wiki is still being actively used which I have no way of checking, I would support adding this. Ping NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh * Pppery * in solidarity 18:07, 30 June 2026 (UTC)
For your information, the wiki isn't terribly active (it got 8 edits over the last 30 days) and also doesn't have many pages (7 LTA pages at the time of writing). I occasionally look at those so it isn't like the wiki is entirely useless, but, objectively speaking, having the interwiki prefix likely won't add much in the foreseeable future. It is a small point, but I note that the prefixpetscan: maps to https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=$1. That location then redirects to https://petscan.wmcloud.org/?psid=$1 so it would probably be sensible to change the mapping to petscan.wmcloud.org at source.
