The Nigeria National Funding Program (NNFP) is a micro and rapid localized funding initiative designed to support micro and rapid grant requests from individual Wikimedians, user groups, and mission-aligned contributors in Nigeria. This program is co-led by Nigerian Wikimedia affiliates in partnership with the Wikimedia Foundation’s Community Resources Team and aligns with the Foundation’s commitment to continuing to equitably resource the movement while taking steps to support the movement towards subsidiarity in resource distribution. This will involve moving decision-making about certain resource distribution to those closest to the work, in alignment with the Principle of Subsidiarity
Why this program
This initiative is grounded in the principle of subsidiarity— the idea that decisions about resources are best made by those closest to the context. Nigerian Wikimedia communities have diverse and evolving needs that benefit from faster, locally informed funding decisions. This initiative complements already existing efforts under the micro-grants program by Wikimedia Nigeria and other local affiliate initiatives. The NNFP seeks to:
Ensure timely and flexible support for community-led initiatives.
Reduce bureaucracy in the grantmaking process.
Strengthen the capacity of Nigerian affiliates to steward resources.
Advance equity by increasing accessibility to funding for underrepresented themes, communities, and individuals.
Strengthen resourcing of locally relevant initiatives and priorities that strengthen the Wikimedia Movement and its projects.
