Explain your plan
[edit]Tell us about how you contribute currently, and how you would contribute if WMF were to gift a used laptop to you.
As a human being with passion for helping others acquire knowledge, I started contributing to the Wikimedia movement from 2017, with active participation from 2019 onwards. I am among the earliest Wikimedians to help in lifting Hausa Wikipedia and Hausa-related content in the Wikimedia movement from 2019 to date. I started with offline participation and online participation in carrying out different Wikimedia trainings, workshops, and photo walks. For the past five years I have worked actively in lifting the growth of Hausa Wikipedia and Hausa-related content in every angle of Wikimedia sister projects, Online Hausa Wikipedia Awareness and Wikicite/grant/Bibliography and citations of Hausa folklore
As a Hausa community global sysop, I voluntarily work with other editors in organizing different Wikimedia projects and events on different topics like awareness and campaigns, photography and videography, content writing creation and edit-a-thons, sound and audio production uploads, and what have you.
Moreover, I am also a community leader/organizer that creates Wikimedia programs and works tirelessly in contributing to the effectiveness of Wikimedia programs in Hausa Wikipedia and Hausa-related content in Nigerian settings. I also play a significant role in training upcoming editors and onboarding them through trainings, workshops, and awareness. I participate in many Wikimedia campaigns like Wiki Loves Africa as a contestant, and I also become a local organizer in the Hausa community. I also participate in campaigns like 1Library 1Reference, Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Ramadan, UCoC, and more.
Apart from that, I also initiated a user group called the Nigerian Commons Photographers User Group, focusing on capturing astonishing photographs from different places across Nigeria by deploying editors and units that will work to capture places, though the user group was not a registered affiliate to AffCom. I also create a campaign called the WikiSound Audio Speaks Campaign, focusing on sound and audio-related content, uploading audios, and linking them to relevant Wikimedia pages across Nigerian-related content under different Nigerian languages.
My significant contribution to health is in the past, a contribution that is memorable and historical: voluntary work during the 2019 covid pandemic where we worked effectively in participating to create articles related to covid-19 in Hausa, part of many articles that we supervised and reviewed in Hausa Wikipedia. [1] As part of the activities, we also created a campaign awareness in 2021 about the covid-19 pandemic across social media handles. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1BCnbv93CH/?mibextid=wwXIfr
Furthermore, I also play a vital role in carrying out a Wikimedia program on health care on breast cancer prevention and awareness and creating Wikimedia-related articles on breast cancer in Hausa Wikipedia to help in eradicating breast cancer and understanding breast cancer. Lastly, we also have a future plan of creating awareness and programs about health organizations in Nigeria and the world at large, organizations like the World Health Organization WHO and health organizations in Nigeria. The main aim of this program is to create credibility and quality in health-related content in Hausa Wikipedia, with the impact of creating qualitative articles on health organizations for Hausa communities. This plan is scheduled to take place around September 2026 or early 2027.
If the laptop is granted to me, it will assist me in the following Wikimedia activities.
- Documentation and translation: There are several pages and articles that require translation from other wikis to Hausa Wikipedia. The laptop will assist me in documenting context in other languages to translate to Hausa Wikipedia, which without a laptop I find difficult. Moreover, I am also a global Hausa Wikimedia translator across the Wikimedia ecosystem. MediaWiki does notify me of any recent requests for translation to the Hausa language, which you can see here in my talk page.
- Speed and accuracy: Having this laptop will increase work and workability of the work I do in different areas like translation, creating articles, uploading content, and editing.
- Media content and storage advantage: having the laptop will grant me the privilege to store more files, like images, audio, and video, before uploading to Wikimedia Commons.
- Accessing health-related information and databases online to help in shaping information related to health and other Wikimedia activities.
- It will strengthen my role as a program organizer in different Wikimedia programs to come.
I personally will not attend Wikimania in Paris, but I have assigned someone that is trustworthy to collect and help in delivering the laptop to me here in Nigeria. The person whom I have spoken to and have agreed to collect and deliver it to me easily in person of User:Lucy Iwuala, I look forward to hearing from you on the possible arrangement of the laptop processing.
