Main proposal

MatchStats Editor

2. and 3. Proposed start and end dates for the proposal.

2026-06-01 - 2026-07-05

4. What is your tech project about, and how do you plan to build the product?

Include the following points in your answer:

  • Project goal and problem you solve
  • Product strategy or project roadmap
  • Technical approach (infrastructure, tech stack, key tools and services)
  • Integrations or dependencies (if any)

One of the main issues I encountered while creating or improving footballer articles was the inconsistency between the data in the infobox and the the “career statistics” table. In addition, updating this data is pretty difficult not only for new users but even for relatively "experienced" users like myself.

With the gadget I am developing, I aim to solve this problem. When we open any footballer’s article, the gadget appears automatically and when we click, it opens a new window where we can enter club, season, match, and goal information. When we press the button "preview", it generates the statistics table within the article and allows us to fill it in easily.

At the same time, without requiring any additional edits, it ensures that the data entered for the table is automatically reflected in the infobox as well. Thus, all the issues mentioned above are effectively solved with this gadget.

The fact that the tool is suitable for both new and experienced users makes it accessible to all editors working on these topics.

5. What is the expected impact of your project, and how will you measure success?

Include the following points in your answer:

  • Milestones and progress tracking
  • Project impact and success metrics

After completing the development of the gadget, I will select five users from the Turkish Wikipedia community who contribute on footballer articles and ask them to use the gadget. I will then gather their feedback through either written communication or video calls to learn about their experiences. Based on their feedback, I will make any necessary improvements and ensure that the gadget is ready for use.

My goal is to encourage every user working on football-related content to use this gadget. Statistics tables are often the sections that users hesitate to edit or even add. Because entering data there is relatively complex, lacks a consistent standard format, and is more difficult to update compared to the infobox, users generally avoid making these changes. With this gadget, I believe this hesitation will be eliminated and that we will be able to provide more comprehensive information in footballer articles.

6. Who is your target audience, and how have you confirmed there is demand for this project? How did you engage with the Wikimedia community?

Include the following points in your answer:

  • Project demand and target audience description
  • Links to interaction(s) with Wikimedia community
  • Evidence from community consultation such as the [Community Wishlist]

The target users are anyone who contributes to football-related content, regardless of whether they are new or experienced. As someone who has created or edited hundreds of footballer articles, it was not difficult for me to notice this issue.

7. How will your team predict and manage potential user security and privacy risks, and what risks do you currently see?

Include the following points in your answer:

  • The level of in-house or consulted security and privacy expertise you will have available to you during delivery of this project
  • How your development, testing, and deployment processes mitigate the introduction of unnecessary security or privacy risks

I don't see such risks.

8. Who is on your team, and what is your experience?

Include the following points in your answer:

  • Your experience as a developer, relevant past projects
  • Wikimedia SUL (developer), Gerrit, Github, Gitlab or other relevant public account handles
  • Other team members, their roles and expertise

I have no experience in developing gadgets on Wikipedia. However, I do have extensive experience in providing feedback on tools that have been developed. The tool called “[[1] Katalitik]” on Turkish Wikipedia is one that I saw on Commons and helped to adopt it to the Turkish Wikipedia (I did not develop it myself, just gave the idea).

9. How will the project be maintained long-term?

Include the long-term maintenance plan with maintainer(s) in your answer. If you expect the long-term maintenance to incur expenses, please list those and the plan for long-term expense coverage.

In long term, only expenses might be are translation to other languages. If the structure of the infobox changes, then some updates might be needed.

10. Under what license will your code be released, and how will you ensure the product is well documented?

Include the following points in your answer:

  • Code license and compatibility with Wikimedia projects
  • Documentation plan

They will be released under Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) ve GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) licences.

11. Will your project depend on or contribute to third-party tools or services?

No, it won't.

12. Is there anything else you’d like to share about your project? (optional)

Since it's my first application for a grant to develop a gadget, I am open to any suggestions or willing to respond any doubts.
