The FemArt Wiki Rwanda project seeks to create awareness of the abilities, skills, and strengths of women by increasing their representation in publicly accessible knowledge platforms such as Wikipedia and Wikidata. In Rwanda, as in many communities, there remains a significant gap in the documentation and recognition of women’s contributions in art, culture, and other professional fields. This underrepresentation perpetuates gender inequality and limits community awareness about the value of women’s work and perspectives. The main challenges we aim to address include: Visibility Gap: Many women artists and leaders in Rwanda lack coverage in online knowledge platforms, making their work and achievements less accessible to the broader public. Knowledge Inequality : A lack of reliable, structured content about women in various fields reinforces societal biases and limits equitable access to information. Community Awareness : The broader community has limited exposure to discussions about gender equality, particularly through creative and educational channels. To tackle these challenges, FemArt Wiki Rwanda will: Organize edit-a-thons where participants will create and edit Wikipedia and Wikidata articles about women in arts and other professional domains. Ensure that all content added is well-sourced and aligns with Art+Feminism’s mission, vision, and values, including their equity statement and anti-racism policy. Empower participants, particularly women and allies, to recognize and document women’s achievements, thereby creating a lasting digital footprint of women’s contributions. Foster community awareness and dialogue on gender equality, using the measurable outputs (number of articles created/edited) as a tangible indicator of change. Through these approaches, FemArt Wiki Rwanda will help build a more equitable representation of women in knowledge spaces, encourage participation in digital knowledge creation, and leave a lasting impact on the Rwandan community by promoting awareness of gender equality and the value of women’s contributions

Provide guidance on gender equity, anti-racism, and ethical content creation in line with Art+Feminism’s policies. 2.Edit-a-thon Sessions Organize hands-on editing sessions where participants create and improve Wikipedia and Wikidata articles focused on women in arts, culture, and other professional fields. Pair experienced editors with newcomers to provide mentorship and ensure quality contributions. 3.Content Verification & Quality Check Review articles and edits for accuracy, sourcing, and compliance with Wikimedia standards. Ensure that all entries align with the project’s goal of highlighting women’s achievements. 4.Community Engagement & Awareness Host discussions and short workshops on gender equality, the value of women’s contributions, and the importance of equitable representation in knowledge spaces. Share the outcomes of the edit-a-thon with the wider Rwandan community via social media and local networks. 5.Post-Event Follow-Up & Documentation Collect metrics such as the number of articles created or improved, number of participants trained, and qualitative feedback.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

FemArt Wiki Rwanda engages young women, artists, feminists, students, and Wikimedia Rwanda members who are passionate about gender equality, art, and open knowledge. Participants will come from Rwanda’s creative, academic, and civil society sectors that champion women’s empowerment and inclusion.

Before the activities, participants will be reached through social media outreach, art and feminist networks, and Wikimedia Rwanda volunteers. Orientation sessions will introduce them to Wikipedia, Wikidata, and the Art+Feminism movement, preparing them for active participation.

During the activities, participants will receive hands-on training in creating and editing Wikipedia and Wikidata articles, guided by experienced editors to ensure quality and adherence to Wikimedia standards. Collaborative sessions will foster knowledge-sharing and skill development.

Post-event follow-up will include assessments to measure learning outcomes and engagement. Participants will be encouraged to join the Wikimedia User Group Rwanda to continue contributing and help close the gender gap in digital knowledge spaces.

Through this approach, FemArt Wiki Rwanda will cultivate a sustainable network of editors dedicated to documenting women’s achievements, amplifying women’s voices, and promoting gender equality in Rwanda’s digital knowledge landscape.

The idea for the FemArt Wiki Rwanda project was discussed with the Wikimedia User Group Rwanda Executive Team to ensure it aligns with the community’s ongoing initiatives. During our meeting, we presented the project’s focus on addressing the gender gap in online knowledge platforms by increasing the visibility of Rwandan women in arts and other professional fields. The executive team strongly supported the proposal, emphasizing its importance in promoting gender equity and complementing existing Art+Feminism efforts within the Wikimedia movement. Together, we discussed how the project could build community capacity through edit-a-thons, mentorship, and awareness campaigns that empower more women and allies to contribute to Wikimedia projects. We also engaged broader community members through group discussions and online platforms to gather feedback and refine the project idea. The feedback highlighted the need for continued training and collaboration to ensure high-quality contributions and long-term engagement. The discussions confirmed the project’s value and its potential to strengthen local participation while bridging the gender gap in digital knowledge spaces.
