Make galleries work better for mobile (Community Wishlist/W427)

Description

Galleries are a great feature for showing off many of the good photos from Wikimedia Commons in articles, and by using the captions well, for giving important context to the articles. On the desktop site, galleries work great, they are responsive and have slideshow and hover features.

However, on mobile, galleries are… suboptimal, to say the least. Slideshows don't work at all, and show in the default mode. The default mode doesn't have the responsiveness that the desktop modes have, so all images will be added one after another, and be much narrower than the available width.

For example, compare the desktop and mobile versions of no:Kaupanger stavkirke#Bilder. If you're doing this on a desktop computer, make sure to make the screen pretty narrow (like a mobile device) and reload the page – the galleries behave differently when the page is loaded with a narrow screen. Another example with slideshows is no:Ardenneroffensiven, which has several thoughtfully-crafted slideshow galleries, but they look pretty bad in mobile.
