Wikimedia LGBT+ is a Wikimedia user group that promotes the development of content on Wikimedia projects which is of interest to LGBT+ communities and supports LGBT+ individuals who engage in Wikimedia activities. Wikimedia LGBT+ is a global, intersectional community that welcomes people of all races, religions, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations, gender identities, and abilities. Wikimedia LGBT+ was first announced at Wikimania in 2012 and was approved by the Affiliations Committee in September 2014.

Our mission

We ensure that LGBT+ people, communities and their cultures are represented in Wikimedia projects. We do this by supporting LGBT+ people and allies across the world safely to improve LGBT+ content, and to access and participate in Wikimedia projects and related Open Knowledge projects.

Our vision

Writing in 2026, by 2031, we envision:

  • our independent organisation to be globally recognized as the most important advocate for, and advisor on LGBT+ Open Knowledge and the people that create it;
  • the Wikimedia Movement to be offering sustained programmes that assure queer safety, representation and sharing across Wikimedia projects and languages, as well as a framework of widely accepted standards and norms for queer content, and its creation from original sources; and
  • a world in which access and contribution to free knowledge is equitable, inclusive and accepting of LGBT+ history and reality.
