Post your feedback about using the visual editor.

If you have never provided feedback before, you can learn how to do it effectively. If you are reporting a problem directly on this page, please include your web browser, computer operating system, and wiki skin (usually Vector, sometimes Monobook). The feedback tool within the visual editor will include your user agent details instead.

You can use this page to tell the Wikimedia developers your ideas and issues about using the visual editor: this is the only feedback page actively monitored by WMF staff. The Contributors team welcomes your feedback and ideas, especially on user interface decisions and the priorities for adding new features. All comments are read, in any language, but personal replies are not guaranteed: the team will try and go through reports here at least once a week. Need more attention? Report directly in Phabricator. Please note that the Wikimedia Foundation does not provide support for installing VisualEditor on third-party wikis. Please report bugs involving Parsoid at Talk:Parsoid instead.

You may also want to read a guide to optimize the visual editor's experience on your site, which details work necessary on the community side (such as translating or setting up citation systems).

No-break spaces in figure captions

[edit]

It looks like a bug: when I try to enter a no-break space character (U+00A0, &#0160, Alt+0160) in the figure caption, it is replaced to a regular space (U+0020). There is no such problem in source editing mode. Enciwik (talk) 00:15, 10 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

"Liste des championnes vainqueurs"??? Ce n'est pas français. Et oui, n'ayez pas peur de dire vainqueuses, vainqueresses ou à la grande limite vainqueures (mais pourquoi ajouter un -e au masculin alors que le féminin existe déjà?). Vous avez peut-être du mal à le concevoir mais oui, une femme peut remporter des victoires... Suggestion: more explicit output for shortened references

[edit]

Hi,

I have been using more and more VE during the last months, only reverting to source editor to switch (reference) templates (cite web to cite book for ex). Keep on the good work!

I would find useful to see a preview of a shortened reference by hovering over its footnote marker, when editing, instead of the standard Template message. If you have several refs next to each other, you need to click all of them until you find the one you want, considering that they disappear from the reference list in VE mode.

Today when clicking on the footnote marker, VE shows the following message "Template / Generated from: sfn" or "Template / Generated from: harvnb". A preview would be more useful imho. For ex:

- code: {sfn|Doe|2021|p=101}

- VE message now: Template / Generated from: sfn (+ edit button)

- Proposed output: Doe 2021, p. 101 (+ edit button)

Thanks! Afernand74 (talk) 13:06, 24 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Scrolls wildly when performing search/replace

[edit]

I am using search and replace on a regexp on an article of wikitext size 61kb.

Sometimes, not always, after I press "replace" the viewport will scroll far, far away from where the caret is. The careted text will flash first and then it will scroll down and away.

I have tried moving the cursor to somewhere else in the document, but this does not help.

Possibly related to my other scrolling problem I reported here. Elizium23 (talk) 08:08, 9 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

The reason I raised this issue is because it causes "Search and Replace" to be extremely hazardous, since I must do many of those operations by manually reviewing each replacement; I can't review what I can't see! Elizium23 (talk) 01:23, 8 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Template code problem

[edit]

I can't make changes on text inside the code template on VisualEditor because when I click where I want to write VisualEditor shifts the cursor as the first column, therefore the lines of code aren't visible anymore. ZandDev (talk) 23:35, 27 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Does this happen in every article, or only some? Can you give me a link? Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 02:58, 11 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
I have this problem only when there are long lines (longer than the width of the code block template widget), but I can't obviously (I cannot try every piece of code) be sure of that.
The Bit_Field page contains two code blocks.
I had this problem when I translated the page to Italian; the code with standard/textual mode.
After have copied the code try to open within the editor in visual editor mode and modify the code.
If I move the cursor from the line start in a another point of the code the first visualized column will be the cursor one, instead of the first. The heart of the problem is that, after moving the cursor, it is not possible to view or modify the first visualized columns.

Issue with Visual diff

[edit]

I recently opened a discussion at Talk:VisualEditor/Diffs . Would it be better to discuss it at this talk page?

(Apologies if this subject has come up before; I don't know how to search all past topics in this structured discussion.) Isaacl (talk) 14:30, 14 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Search mostly doesn't work for Structured Discussions; they stopped work before getting it integrated into MediaWiki's normal search. Some people think that the best approach is to take "thing talk site:mediawiki.org" in your favorite web search engine, rather than even trying here.
Let's talk over there. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:24, 22 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Why "Add paragraph"?

[edit]

Hi! In most WYSIWYG editors, like say Microsoft Word or Google Docs, whenever I want to add a paragraph, I simply place the cursor before or after and press enter a few times. I'd dare say that 100% of users are familiar with this functionality. So why is VisualEditor different and has an "Add paragraph" button appear between elements? This feature seems inconsistent with the way the rest of the VE works, and more importantly it seems to me like the main cause of differences between the rendered page and the VE surface. Sophivorus (talk) 13:58, 26 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

It appears between floated block elements, a concept that doesn't exist in either Microsoft Word or Google Docs (because they're aping paper) but is fundamental to how HTML documents work.
If you are in a paragraph, you can just put the cursor somewhere and press return a few times, as you say. Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 16:50, 26 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Problems with tag extensions and XML syntax

[edit]

I created a tag extension "led", which displays software controlled LEDs (small png graphics) in Wiki pages. When I use it like (simplified examle) <led color="red"></led> I can edit the page with VE, using <led color="red" /> editing with VE is impossible, VE hangs loading the page. Both versions are functioning and the led is displayed. The same happens to another tag extension.

This problem occurs in VE version 0.1.0, seems to be fixed in 0.1.2 Mosmas (talk) 16:33, 26 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Cell alignment in Tables

[edit]

When you use the VisualEditor to copy a cell or a row in a table that has an |style="text-align: left;" | attached to it, to overrule the entire table's alignment, the style alignment isn't copied with the cell's content. Then, there is no way in the formatting tools to assign an alignment setting to the cell. Can this please be added? Be ideal if you could format an entire column, but even cell by cell would be useful. The-Pope (talk) 15:13, 12 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

At this time, that type of formatting can only be done in a wikitext editor. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 20:16, 12 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
If anyone in the future finds this like I did in October 2023: the only way to add cell formatting such as centering the text is still by editing the source code (wikitext editor). It can not be done in the Visual Editor. Kc3302 (talk) 02:04, 22 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

@PotsdamLamb Thanks for the response! I haven't tried that.
I really mean that I would like to just copy one of our usernames on this page for instance and paste it into an article and it would retain the hyperlink like it has on this page. However, it just converts it to plain text.
I realized that it seems to be possible with the TinyMCE editor, but I like the VisualEditor better. Mikepsinn (talk) 17:47, 10 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
So for the user name you can do the typical ping, hi, yo, etc. or if the person is in a discussion thread you can click the person icon on the bottom of the with a plus and select the name from the list. Apparently, this is due to inside alt=. Is this a bug or a feature? Matěj Suchánek (talk) 15:53, 9 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Alttext must be plain text.
The use of HTML markup probably confused the visual editor. The visual editor internally converts wikitext into HTML, lets you edit the HTML, and then converts it all back to wikitext when you save. Copy paste in article in mobile gives only plain plaintext

[edit]

I've just did a volley of edits on VE mobile and noticed copy pasting didn't include all the markup like it does on regular desktop. I only got plaintext and was forced to use source editing. A known issue? I'm on Android+Chrome. Ugog-public (talk) 15:53, 11 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

I don't know if this is a problem with the copying (which I don't think VE can affect) or with the pasting (which it might be able to). If you copy similar content to another app, is the formatting retained by the other app? Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:58, 1 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for you response as usual :)
Well no, it does show up as plain text in other apps, I just tried. Isn't that how it's on desktop too? Only copy-paste within VE pastes the wikitext properly, elsewhere, it's just plaintext even on desktop. Ugog-public (talk) 13:34, 7 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
It depends on the app. If I paste from a website into Google Docs, I get rich-text formatting (e.g., copying a portion of this discussion thread copies bold face text and links, not just the words). If I paste into an e-mail message, I get plain text or rich text, depending on whether the e-mail message is set to plain text or rich text. Hi, I tried to visually edit en:List of rampage killers (religious, political, or ethnic crimes) and the large table under the heading "Rampage killers" shows raw wikitext. Elizium23 (talk) 01:04, 15 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

So it was apparently a ''nowiki'' in the table that was confusing VE: when I realized this and removed it, VE behaves again. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_rampage_killers_(religious,_political,_or_ethnic_crimes)&diff=1028732004&oldid=1028731447 See diff. Citoid adds unrelated social media junk to Template:Cite web

In this edit I used VE and Citoid to generate each citation from a URL. As you can see, for the latimes.com citation, it added junk apparently from their social media badges: last=Facebook|last2=Twitter|last3=options|first3=Show more sharing|last4=Facebook|last5=Twitter|last6=LinkedIn|last7=Email|last8=URLCopied!|first8=Copy Link|last9=Print| so people are correcting this afterwards, because I did not check the diffs. Is this a known issue? I searched Phabricator. Elizium23 (talk) 02:19, 21 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

it's a known issue that lots of websites don't have perfect metadata in their website and that as a result you might get unexpected information in your citation. You should always check if what has been generated makes sense. —TheDJ (Not WMF) (talkcontribs) 11:21, 22 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Process for creating redirects with VE is burdensome

[edit]

The current process for creating redirects with VE is quite burdensome and unintuitive. You have to go to the page options menu, choose page settings, check the "redirect this page" box, type out the name of the page, click apply changes, then go through the publish page dialogue. Redirecting is something that is most often done when creating a new blank page, so it might be nice if, when looking at a blank page in VE, a shortcut to creating a redirect appeared. Sdkbtalk 19:19, 3 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

We wanted to make it more prominent, but as it was some experienced users complained that newbies were creating bad redirects. I think the current balance is probably fine. Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 19:56, 3 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Jdforrester (WMF), do you know when that feedback was received? I believe we've only recently tightened up our patrolling of new redirects, so things may be better now than they were a few years ago. Courtesy pinging @Rosguill, who I believe is active in this area. In any case, two points: 1) the fact that beginners tend to make more mistakes than experienced editors seems like a bad reason to make workflows difficult for them and for everyone else on VE—the extreme endpoint of that line of thinking is that many VE edits are low-quality newcomer edits, so let's just disable VE. 2) If we ever want experienced users to start using VE, we need to make it work better with the kind of editing experienced editors do, which includes creating redirects. Sdkbtalk 23:08, 3 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Around 2013, I think. When you say "we" I assume you mean the English Wikipedia given you don't state otherwise? This software is written for hundreds of Wikimedia wikis and thousands of non-Wikimedia hosted wikis; we don't make decisions solely based on local sentiment. :-) I vaguely believe that the pressure was from the French or possibly Spanish Wikipedias.

1) the fact that beginners tend to make more mistakes than experienced editors seems like a bad reason to make workflows difficult for them and for everyone else on VE—the extreme endpoint of that line of thinking is that many VE edits are low-quality newcomer edits, so let's just disable VE.

Indeed, and such arguments are put forward every month in different communities.

2) If we ever want experienced users to start using VE, we need to make it work better with the kind of editing experienced editors do, which includes creating redirects.

Yes, I agree. I'm just giving some context. Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 01:20, 4 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Not sure I have much special insight to this aspect of redirects, but I agree with Sdkb that VE is more difficult than raw for redirect editing, despite otherwise preferring VE for articles. Rosguill (talk) 00:57, 4 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
The goal wasn't to make redirect creation fast for people like us. The goal is to help the less-experienced editors (that's 99% of them, compared to the four of us in this thread) be successful (e.g., actually create a redirect, and have that redirect point to an extant page). Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:54, 14 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Whatamidoing (WMF), the present process isn't at all intuitive for newcomers. Sdkbtalk 19:56, 14 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Typing a code that you memorized isn't intuitive, either. What do you think would be intuitive? Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 16:13, 15 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
What I suggested above—that when looking at a blank page in VE, a prominent button or similar provides users an option to create a redirect. The vast majority of the circumstances in which an editor would want to create a redirect occur when creating a new blank page, and many instances in which an editor is creating a new page are ones where they're creating a redirect, so it should make sense to provide a shortcut from that screen. Sdkbtalk 18:03, 22 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
One of the principles for VisualEditor's toolbar is that it's always the same. Some things might be grayed out, but they're always present. This would only used be used in a minority of edits, but it would be present every time, not just when starting a new page. At the English Wikipedia, a quick look suggests that about 12% of all new pages today were redirects. In the mainspace, it's a higher percentage, but some of these are created via scripts. Looking specifically at mainspace page creations in the visual editor, about 21% of them were redirects – at the English Wikipedia. The equivalent numbers are 9% for the French Wikipedia and 12% at the German-language Wikipedia. Perhaps redirects are created less often at non-English Wikipedias. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 23:39, 28 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, I think I still need to clarify further. What I'd like to see is not changes to the VE toolbar, but rather to the editing window body. I envision something similar to the new empty talk page experience, where opening an empty page in the VE would present users with one button to create a new page and another to create a redirect to an existing page. (Looking farther ahead, I envision further refinements, such as the "create a new article" option asking what type of article you'd like to write and then providing relevant prefilled content.) Sdkbtalk 21:30, 29 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
To revive this old thread: Are you thinking about a sort of Article Creation Wizard? Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 00:29, 5 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
I am; see w:User:Sdkb/sandbox/Vision for a better Article Wizard. Sdkbtalk 02:22, 5 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
I think that needs a little more work, but it's not a bad start. I think some of it would be confusing. For example, if you want to write about your favorite book, most people won't know whether that's a "non-financial connection" or "none". Additionally, even if you know what's meant, editors have different views on where to draw the line. Many editors are happy to declare that you have a COI for any voluntary organization you belong to, and almost nobody is willing to declare that w:en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Scouting, almost all of whom are/were dedicated members of scouting organizations, have a COI for their voluntary organization of choice.
The Editing team has talked about providing in-editor advice à la Clippy for years. The problem is that it's a really really really hard problem to solve. There are some things that could be fairly straightforward (e.g., if the edit adds numbers, you can prompt for adding a ref; if a paragraph has no wikilinks, you can prompt for adding links), but the things that are most important require human judgement and vary from topic to topic. The kind of content that is necessary and apprpriate for the ==Plot== section of an article about a novel or a film is exactly the kind of writing that a smart tool would detect as non-encyclopedic content. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 06:12, 7 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I think we moved forward a little with in-editor feedback at w:Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)/Archive_194#Adding a new edit filter trigger action: pop-up box. Some types of feedback would be very hard, but let's get a system for it up and running for the easier stuff, and then we can build on it over time. Sdkbtalk 06:30, 7 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

I have done a bit of digging, but I haven't found the answer. There were a series of requests for that behavior a few years back (e.g., phab:T95518 and phab:T95605), and they were never officially implemented. Then it seems that it started working, and now it has stopped working. Could it be related to phab:T110986?
IHurbainPalatin (WMF) or others, do you happen to remember anything changing in Parsoid about line breaks, probably at least a couple of months ago? Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 19:02, 3 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
We should probably open a new phab ticket for this. First step would be to determine (using the process in VisualEditor/Debugging#To inspect HTML) whether or not VE is sending back different HTML to parsoid in the "Shift-Enter" vs the "Enter" case. If the "Shift-Enter" isn't showing up in the HTML, then this is a Visual Editor bug. If there's different HTML for the two cases but Parsoid isn't rendering it properly, then it's a Parsoid bug.
(From the description from @Gamebird92 it sounds like a Visual Editor bug, aka you should see a hard line break as a different result in Visual Editor I believe, not "the same thing as when I type enter alone".) cscott (talk) 15:17, 4 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Single line breaks display is confusing

[edit]

The VisualEditor currently indicates single line breaks using the ↲ symbol. This does not make it clear, and there is no tooltip or anything when you hover over them. Single line breaks are generally discouraged, but they're quite frequently mistakenly added, so we ought to have a better way to identify them and guide users to fixing them where warranted. Unable to add nsbp character in specific situation

In an edit on Wikipedia, I replaced nbsp templates with nbsp characters using the Nbsp button from the Special character menu. Template with no parameter (suggestion)

[edit]

Hi,

I'm a French user on frwiki.

When inserting a template without parameter (for instance {{,}} which displays a "," in superscript often between references), i would find it glad that it automatically skip the second step when asking for parameter/fields/inputs. It really only concerns template with no parameters (i don't mind for templates which have implicit parameters and can be specified or not).

Because what's more is that I can't even skip the 2nd step fast, because i can't use "Enter" to insert the template (the mouse is in the field case, and i would need to roll up "Maj"+"Tab" 4 times to get to the "Insert" and then insert the model. So i usually use mouse which is far slowlier.

> So my suggestion would be:

* automatically insert a template with no parameter (without the 2nd step asking for field input)

* or at least make the cursor field focus be on the "Insert" button, directly in 2nd step so an "enter" will make it almost automatic.

Thanks in advance for your feedback. Curios7ty (talk) 04:03, 20 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for posting this suggestion. I don't expect this change to be made soon. In between now and then, you might want to learn the keyboard shortcuts. I don't see this one listed at VisualEditor/Keyboard shortcuts, but if you use a Mac, the keyboard shortcut for clicking the "Insert" button is usually ⌘ Command+↵ Enter. (This works on almost all of the dialogs inside the visual editor.) On a Windows or Linux system, the equivalent might be Control+Return or maybe Control+⇧ Shift+Return. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 16:17, 21 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your quick answer. And thanks for the tip: both Control+Return and Control+⇧ Shift+Return work. It will sure help :).
And seeing the task on Phabricator dating back, i understand why u say u won't expect changes to be made soon.
At least, the tip you gave me is a satisfying answer for my problem. Thanks. Curios7ty (talk) 05:26, 23 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
[edit]

When making an edit at English Wikipedia with the source editor, the w:MediaWiki:Editpage-head-copy-warn notice appears at the top of the page, warning that "Content that violates any copyrights will be deleted. Encyclopedic content must be verifiable. Any work submitted to Wikipedia can be edited, used, and redistributed—by anyone—subject to certain terms and conditions." The last sentence is just a disclaimer, but the first two communicate really important information. However, this notice is entirely missing from VE. This is especially problematic given that newer editors, who most need to hear the warning, are also the ones most likely to use VE. Is there a space in the VisualEditor editing environment where we could add this notice or something similar? Sdkbtalk 18:13, 22 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Sorry about not replying sooner.
I don't think there's an easy spot to add that warning, but I wonder:
 • Warnings that display when you open the page are more intrusive in VisualEditor (including the 2017WTE). You have to click past them before you can start typing. Do you want to click past that every single time you open a page to edit? I don't.
 • Is there any reason to believe that newcomers have a different rate of copyright violations depending on which editing tools they're using? Past research has suggested that newcomers using the visual editor are less likely to be reverted, which hints that it might not make any difference. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:16, 17 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
The text in the notice was updated the other day as a result of this discussion, so it's now a lot more concise, which means I'd like to see it show up in VE all the more. I don't think it's good that editnotices are more prominent in one editor than the other—they're just as important for each and should show up the same. Sdkbtalk 22:59, 17 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
(It's not technically an edit notice, I thought?)
Presumably the actual goal is to avoid copyvios and get citations added, rather than to display a particular bit of text, right? Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 00:03, 5 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
I'm not quite sure what it is technically, but that's somewhat immaterial to the non-technical consideration.
And yeah, that's certainly the point. Could you clarify what you're asking or saying there? Sdkbtalk 02:17, 5 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
For the last several years, this specific message has been shown to editors using one tool, and not to editors using another tool.
The expectation is that this message would result in fewer reverts. However, the reversion rate is slightly lower in the people who don't see the message. That fact suggests that this message probably doesn't reduce copyvios or increase citations. Therefore, adding that message probably won't achieve the actual goal.
It's still a good goal. The question is what could be done that would actually achieve the goal. Maybe a proper how-to-edit onboarding system? Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 17:00, 5 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
That's confusing correlation with causation—the revert rate is presumably lower in VE because it's easier to use, but it might be lower still with the message. We don't know. I would love to see a proper large-scale A-B test that would give us some data to work with. Would you support that? Sdkbtalk 17:29, 5 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
I'd be happy to A/B test the world.
Theoretically, it should be possible to check past edits to determine which editing environment is more likely to result in the addition of citations. Edits in the visual editor and its 2017 wikitext mode have always been tagged, and they recently added Special:Tags for the 2010 WikiEditor. You can see a list of available tags for editing environments at enwiki along with an estimate of how often they were used last month (all namespaces).
My guess is that mainspace edits in the visual editor are more likely to add ref tags than any of the wikitext editors, and that mobile edits are least likely from any of the general editing tools (e.g., excluding HotCat, which isn't supposed to be adding citations). You would probably also want to exclude any edit that was tagged with "Undo" or "Manual revert". It would probably make sense to check edits only for relative newcomers, since experienced editors are expected to already know such basic things, even if it's not there in the interface.
The reason that I would expect the visual editor to be more likely is because it already has a built-in system to encourage both links and citations. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 20:19, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
I'd certainly be interested to see A/B data on VE vs. other editors, but that wouldn't answer the pertinent question here, which is not which editor is best, but whether or not it helps to have the universal editnotice. Data that editors do better with VE wouldn't answer that, because we don't know whether it's because of the lack of universal editnotice or (my guess) just because VE is easier to use. Regarding "built-in system to encourage both links and citations", I'd say VE makes it easier to add sources but not that it encourages them. I could open a page with VE, add a new entirely unsourced paragraph, and click publish without it anywhere telling me that I'm doing anything wrong (see w:Wikipedia:Making editing easier 2021). But let's stay focused here. Sdkbtalk 20:44, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
You're assuming that what you, an experienced editor who has made 75K edits, see is what a new editor sees, which is not true in this case.
If you're a new editor, the link and cite buttons in the toolbar have glowing blue dots on them. When you click on the blue dots, you get a friendly explanation about why you should make links and cite sources. Try opening https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random?veaction=edit in a private/incognito window, so you can see what new editors see.
In effect, for the question of references, we're already running a natural experiment, between a banner in the old wikitext editor vs glowing blue dots in the newer ones. I suspect, but have never tried to find out for sure, that the blue dots work slightly better. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:15, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Ah, thanks for pointing that out. The blue dots are certainly helpful, and might suffice as replacement for the editnotice, although I do note that what I said above (that I could add unsourced info and never be told I'm doing anything wrong) remains true.
Regarding the popups, a few thoughts:
First, I'm not sure it makes as much sense to have the links one as it does the citations one. I feel like most newcomers have read Wikipedia (and the rest of the internet) enough to know that links are good, and the link icon is an intuitive place for the option. There is some value to it, but if it distracts from the much more important notice about citations, perhaps it should go.
Second, neither of the popups have any "learn more" link, which closes out the option for more competent newcomers to answer questions like "which terms should I link?" (answered here) or "which sources can I use?" The citations one doesn't even mention the idea of reliability, let alone link to a page like w:Help:Introduction to referencing with VisualEditor/5. I do get that there's a very limited amount we can ask newcomers to read, but if we don't even attempt to get across reliability, it means that a substantial number of editors are going to be reverted, which leads them to give up.
Lastly, I like the images a lot. Could they be uploaded to Commons so that we can use them on pages like the referencing one above? Sdkbtalk 22:05, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
An editor has already uploaded those two images as File:VisualEditor tool reference-ltr.png and File:VisualEditor tool link-ltr.png.
You only need to be told about citations if you are adding content. At least at enwiki, that appears to be a minority of edits. If you are copyediting, you might benefit from a reminder about links. Help:Growth/Tools/Add a link is a more heavyweight approach to teaching newcomers about the ideal approach to links.
The existing text mentions citing books, newspapers, and websites. I think this covers most situations. Volunteer-me has been in several discussions recently in which editors have attempted, and failed, to define "reliable sources". We do not even seem to have a widespread agreement any longer that a source can only be declared reliable wrt to the specific content it is supporting, and that therefore there are no "always unreliable" or "always reliable" sources (although there are some that are close enough to always-unreliable that the distinction is unimportant). Work-me would not necessarily recommend that the English Wikipedia's definition be hard-coded into software, but I would really not feel comfortable trying to have the software define reliability when there is no community consensus on what a reliable source is. (NB: "what it is" is not "how you determine whether this one is reliable"). Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 22:28, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Re images, ah cool! Sorry that got missed when I searched on TinEye. Higher resolution copies would be ideal but that's not crucial.
Re most edits not being content additions, true, but we have a pretty good idea of when an edit is likely to be a content addition, and I think there's more we could do to prompt aggressively in that circumstance.
Re the definition of reliable, I agree that there are varying interpretations among editors, as is inevitable for a project like Wikipedia, but I think I perceive more of a consensus than you do—w:WP:V and w:WP:RS are two of the most well-established PAG pages in all of projectspace. And even if there are questions in borderline cases, the more common use case for newcomers is stuff that's pretty clear, like citing IMDb.
Concretely, the two changes I'd like to propose, given our discussion, are:
 1. That we add a link to w:Help:Introduction to the Manual of Style/4 for the linking popup (either over link important words or as a new line with Learn more)
 2. That we change the text and linking for the sources popup to this (additions bolded): Improves your content by adding sources of reliable information. You can cite from reputable books, newspapers, and websites. (Except if we do the link as a "learn more" line, in which case we'd do that here, too).
I see that the lines are encoded at w:MediaWiki:Cite-ve-dialogbutton-citation-educationpopup-text and w:MediaWiki:Visualeditor-linkinspector-educationpopup-text, so I'll go ahead and make the suggestions there, although I'm not 100% sure if they will be able to handle the links without technical help. Sdkbtalk 23:55, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Xaosflux knows how to make such changes.
Volunteer-me would feel compelled to quibble over the "reliable information". Wikipedia does not contain "reliable information"; it is meant to contain "verifiable" information. Also, as a practical matter, if a new editor is getting their information from garbage sources, we (volunteer-we) actually do want them to tell us that. Tripping the spam filter, or activating Cluebot, or having a RecentChanges patroller promptly revert the change because it comes from a popular garbage site is a good outcome. Encouraging people to hide their sources because they don't feel "reputable enough" is not a good idea. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 02:17, 8 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
I left notes on this at enwiki message talk; need to check in to the details and will let you know if it will require dev work or not. As far as the English Wikipedia is concerned, in general the community wants "verifiable information" from "reliable sources" - that does not mean the information is necessarily reliable, and the general disclaimer warns readers that articles are not necessarily accurate or reliable. Xaosflux (talk) 10:24, 8 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Note: those -educatinpopup-text messages do not currently support wikitext or html. As far what the message should say on enwiki, discussion should continue there. Xaosflux (talk) 20:45, 8 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

VE producing poor quality wikitext for bold and italics

[edit]

When using the Visual Editor to make a bold wikilink italicized, it produces '''[[link|''link'']]''' instead of '''''[[link]]''''' (see this edit). (I highlighted the bold text and pressed CTRL-I.) This syntax is really messy, makes the source text unnecessarily cluttered, and doesn't follow standard wikitext practices. Are the developers working on fixing this? [As an aside, the VE talk interface on this page feels really difficult to use and is missing many functions. I had to navigate to a different page and work in a standard wikitext editor to get the nowiki tags to work correctly and paste into this window.] Albany NY (talk) 01:07, 26 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Will there be a response to this? Thanks. Albany NY (talk) 03:26, 11 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Apparently, this is the "correct" way to do it, in terms of wikitext parsing and good HTML. It's not what we're used to, though. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 00:27, 5 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

No longer possible to change reference type / switch to basic form when adding / reworking an automatic citation in visual editor

[edit]

Hello, I used nearly-everyday to do ref maintenance while working on visual editor on French wikipedia, often combining this with other edits, the most common was adding a "." at the end of the ref by switching to "basic form". This was made possible just by clicking the Edit button

Since yesterday, this really useful shortcut is no longer possible with an automatically generated ref, generating a loss of time / loss of quality. Now, clicking on "edit" only allows to work the fields inside the Website Wiki-link (adding, removing some, changing the content but not switching to basic form or other wikilink forms outside the Template:Cite web. This was also useful where the generated ref chose the wrong Template

This problem happens on all browsers and both in fr.wikipedia.org and en.wikipedia.org

The only way to achieve the same result now requires to switch to (or edit again with) source editing, losing time in the process

Is this change permanent or is it just an unwanted bug

How to delete an image in an article when it is no longer needed

[edit]

URL: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Leitmann?action=edit

I added a "Infobox scientist" in the "George Leitmann" article including his portrait among other field entries. I would like to delete the previously inserted portrait Image to avoid duplication. But I could not find a way to deleted it. As a temporary measure I minimized that portrait Image to 1x1 pixels for it not to be apparent. However, in the PC version of display, a small but appreciable rectangular box appears above the "Infobox scientist" box & push down the "Infobox scientist" box, and viewer of that page can click the 1x1 pixel icon to blow up the portrait Image.

Please tell me how to delete that 1x1 pixel Image box so the "Infobox scientist" box will be moved up to conform with other articles having a Infobox. Thank you very much! Springfield MA-CA (talk) 23:54, 31 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

My feedback

[edit]

My suggestions for improvement of the VE after having made numerous edits with it on enwiki (apologies if any/all of these have already been well-elaborated):

 • The manual citation for "News" should have the field for page number there by default rather than having to go through the "Add more information" menu, as page numbers are a must for physical newspaper citations.
 • Other citation templates, e.g. en:Template:Cite magazine, should be available to choose from in a dropdown menu next to "Basic" in the manual citation menu.
 • It should be possible to set meaningful reference names from the VE. A button "Set reference name" next to "Change reference type" would be convenient for this.
 • When switching from visual to source mode, it always feels like there is a risk that the changes will be lost. It would be good to have an option in a menu somewhere to copy the wikitext of the page with the new changes to have peace of mind.
 • When editing a link it's possible to accidentally click it. There should be a warning popup "Are you sure you want to leave this page?", as large changes aren't always fully recovered when going back.
 • It should be possible to align table cells within the VE, as the VE is superior for editing tables in almost every other aspect.
 • Previewing changes when an edit has been made since the visual editor was opened doesn't show diffs relative to the current revision of the page, so editors don't know they'll be overriding new changes to the page. Sod2500 (talk) 04:02, 22 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
A follow-up thought:
 • Even if the page number field isn't listed by default in the news citation template menu, it should be possible to "pin" certain fields in the various citation template menus that one uses frequently, so that they are always there rather than needing to add them via the "Add more information" for every new citation. Sod2500 (talk) 03:41, 25 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
This can be done at your wiki, for any parameter in any template, by editing the TemplateData to make that parameter "suggested". Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 20:55, 17 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Another:
Sometimes I take a chunk of wikitext (e.g. a large table), copy it into my sandbox and then repeatedly switch back and forth between the source and visual editors to work on it (without saving), before copying it back into the article. The VE automatically adds <references /> to the bottom of the text in the sandbox, which if I don't notice and remove when copying the text back over to the article, messes up the article's actual references section (example) and needs to be subsequently removed [1]. I think it would be better if <references /> wasn't automatically added in user sandboxes to fix this. Even better would be if it were possible to work on a single section in the VE and switch back and forth with the source editor for just that section, so it wasn't necessary to copy sections to sandboxes in the first place. Sod25k (talk) 23:29, 15 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your suggestions. Have you seen m:WMDE Technical Wishes/VisualEditor template dialog improvements yet? I think that some of your template-related suggestions might be addressed through this work. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 20:56, 17 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
