New tool idea: Deletion analyzer
[edit]The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
- I had proposed this to w:User:Enterprisey as well but I thought it might be a good idea as an XTool as well: Based on some discussions I had recently, I was wondering whether it would be possible to create a tool that analyzes an admin's deletions and displays them sorted by different categories, i.e. CSD, PROD/BLPPROD, XFD and others and also broken down by speedy criteria and XFD processes (and ideally presented in nice pie charts). Regards SoWhy SoWhy (talk) 07:11, 1 August 2017 (UTC)
- This would be neat, but I might question if it's right for XTools because this would only work for the English Wikipedia (as proposed). Other wikis don't have standardized deletion codes like we do, but we could get semi-accurate numbers through parsing the wiki's MediaWiki:Deletereason-dropdown. — MusikAnimal talk 14:59, 1 August 2017 (UTC)
- Can't say if it's right for XTools per se but if the idea is neat as you say, maybe you or someone else could create it just for en-wiki if it isn't? SoWhy (talk) 17:12, 1 August 2017 (UTC)
- @SoWhy Enterprisey seems like your man! I'm sorry but I can't see this being bundled into XTools. However if you just want some basic numbers I can offer this query: https://quarry.wmflabs.org/query/20674 :) You can try it on any admin, just replace "log_user" with their user ID. You can get a user's user ID with this query. Just "fork" those queries to make them your own, and replace the ID as needed. Hope this helps! — MusikAnimal talk 19:10, 2 August 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for the feedback. If I understand correctly, Quarry can't be used in a script, can it? There you still have to query the API? I actually have some code already to do the basics but it's pretty rough and dirty. Also, I got sidetracked by trying to create a tool to analyze AFD closures by user (which actually works quite nicely if not really efficient because I have to query edits in blocks of 500) SoWhy (talk) 19:26, 2 August 2017 (UTC)
- Quarry is just a interface to run queries against the database. I would recommend using the same (or similar) SQL in your script, as opposed to parsing the logs via the API. You can learn how to connect to the replicas (which are basically sanitized copies of the production database) at wikitech:Help:Toolforge/Database — MusikAnimal talk 20:30, 2 August 2017 (UTC)
Xtools down?

I've been unable to access any tools hosted under the xtools subdomain for a little over 24 hours. Anyone aware if this is a known issue, or is it just me? 76.115.240.134 (talk) 15:47, 1 August 2017 (UTC)
- Can you give the URL you were attempting to load please? ~ Matthewrbowker Talk to me 18:45, 1 August 2017 (UTC)
- Certainly!
- Oh, hmmm, some of them seem to be back up now, but the regular edit count (https://tools.wmflabs.org/xtools-ec/?user=) and BLP count (https://tools.wmflabs.org/musikanimal/blp_edits?username=) were down, amongst other tools.
- Supercount still seems to be down:
- (I used Jimbo by default, but the same thing happens with any user's name: the page hangs forever, never loading whatsoever, regardless of edit count). 76.115.240.134 (talk) 19:08, 1 August 2017 (UTC)
- Oh, and I just noticed that those are now hosted under the subdomain "tools". But weren't they under xtools until just recently? Could that be related or is my memory wonky? 76.115.240.134 (talk) 19:32, 1 August 2017 (UTC)
- Ah, yes. I think I can clear up the wonkyness. The first one is our old XTools, which is hosted under the subdomain "tools." The first one, the edit counter, goes down and up pretty regularly due to crashes that we can't find. I would recommend you use the new one instead: [1]
- @MusikAnimal: with regard to BLP Count. @Cyberpower678: with regard to supercount. Both of those are outside of XTools but still hosted on tool labs.
- Sorry about the confusion! ~ Matthewrbowker Talk to me 17:18, 2 August 2017 (UTC)
- BLP count should be back up and running! I don't know what happened but it fixed itself. At some point I might propose porting that tool to XTools. — MusikAnimal talk 18:57, 2 August 2017 (UTC)
rate limiting for rangecontribs
[edit]The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
I think i just killed rangecontribs because of a typo in the subnet mask. A reasonable limit would make sense. 77.117.171.241 (talk) 08:37, 10 November 2017 (UTC)
- This tool has been superceded by the range contributions functionality built into MediaWiki (example). Please use that moving forward, as we'll probably be disabling the XTools version soon. — MusikAnimal talk 16:20, 10 November 2017 (UTC)
"mw-classes/LanguageConverter.php"?
[edit]The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Hi, the gadget displays "mw-classes/LanguageConverter.php" at zh language, but it works fine at zh-Hans or zh-Hant. It can be solved by fallback zh to zh-Hans (or zh-Hant), but how to do it? Where was I last night? (talk) 14:14, 9 December 2017 (UTC)
Firefox 57
[edit]The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
- This seems to be one of the tools that broke with the last Firefox 57 update on Linux Mint. Seraphim System (talk) 22:40, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, we will need more information. What about it is broken? Can you give a specific link? Thanks! — MusikAnimal talk 10:02, 18 December 2017 (UTC)
- It just isn't visible at all - the page loads and its not there. I'm not sure how I could find out more specific information about why... Seraphim System (talk) 07:34, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
- Could you provide an exact link? Is it broken for all tools in the XTools suite (Page History, Edit Counter, etc.)? Do you see anything, or is it a completely blank page?
- If the page loads, but you're just missing the charts, it might be a JavaScript issue. For that see w:en:WP:JSERROR on how to report any errors. Thanks! — MusikAnimal talk 18:06, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

Have redirects that a user turns into an article be listed under "Articles created"?
[edit]The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
This seems like a good idea as technically the user has created the article as it was originally a redirect. Note the creation would be credited to the expander, not the redirect creator. Anarchyte (talk) 12:26, 27 December 2017 (UTC)
- This is roughly what phab:T12331 is about, which is currently being discussed. If approved, it should be feasible to log page creations from redirects. As it stands right now this is not really possible. The Page Curation extension does log such page creations, but the data is only temporarily stored, and it's only available on English Wikipedia. — MusikAnimal talk 12:57, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
- Ah, fair enough. Thanks. Anarchyte (talk) 07:24, 8 January 2018 (UTC)
