Where can I give feedback?
[edit]- I really want to give feedback, where can I do this? Metrophil44 (talk) 11:23, 11 January 2015 (UTC)
- You're doing it. Nemo 18:09, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
- Ok, then I do it here :)
- I like the idea, that Wikipedia has its own app, and it's really fantastic, but I have some things, I don't like:
- It's not possible to create pages (e.g. talk pages).
- Pages with
Special:or where I'm from:Spezial:can't be viewed in the app. - Categories don't work either
- It's difficult to go to the article discussion and the article's history, because there isn't a button for that.
- It's not possible to add a section, only existing sections can be edited.
- If pulling the left toolbar, it should be possible to click on someone's own name to go to the own user page.
- Editing a docu in a template, doesn't work, when clicking on the edit buttons on the template page
- Infoboxes in the very beginning of an article are relocated and sometimes other things and that infobox/template colide, which doesn't look good. E.g. when viewing my German user page in the app the nav box is squashed into the Babel table.
- And also two mobile aspects, but not with the app:
- I don't like the idea of Special:UserProfile
- In user contributions you can't see whether the edit is recent or not.
- That's my opinion :) Metrophil44 (talk) 15:14, 16 January 2015 (UTC)
- You're doing it. Nemo 18:09, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
- The Wikipedia app also does not ping me, so only when I used the mobile site to make an article when I discovered that I had a welcome message. Could a pinging feature, which is available in most apps, be added to the Wikipedia iOS one? Also, you couldn't see the diffs, which would not be useful only if you can see who made the edits. APK for Android apps?
[edit]I'd like to install the Wiktionary app on a Kindle for kids to use. It's on the Google Play store but not on the Amazon store. Is the released version available as an APK somewhere? Is it still being actively developed? Thanks. DPRoberts534 (talk) 05:23, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
- Hi, is that the developed by User:Pfhayes? You could ask on their talk page! It's not developed by any of the Wikimedia Foundation teams, so I don't have the answer, I'm afraid. Johan (WMF) (talk) 18:52, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
How are article images selected?
[edit]In the Android app, many articles have a "lead image" shown at the top of articles. How do these images get selected? w:Christiansborg Palace, for instance, has a quite good photograph in its infobox, but instead the rather meh map image underneath is shown as the article's lead image in the app. How come? Anders Feder (talk) 17:31, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
Share-a-Fact
[edit]Do you plan to attribute the photographers in your new Share-a-Fact thing in the app, or is a cc-by-sa symbol everything we can expect? CennoxX (talk) 17:47, 1 April 2015 (UTC)
- Photographers? Why not text authors too? Nemo 09:50, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
- I understand your point, but the fact that is shared, is always a very small citation, so I'm not sure, if this text reaches the threshold of originality. Also, even if it doesn't meet the attribution of cc-by-sa, at least the editors are to find at the wikipedia article, which is mentioned in the picture. But if the pictures of the article change the photographers are not that easily to find. CennoxX (talk) 10:36, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

Source code
[edit]Is the source code of Wikipedia's android and iOS application available anywhere (like at GitHub)?
Acagastya (talk) 12:53, 5 August 2015 (UTC)
- @Acagastya Obviously. Android source code is at /apps/android/wikipedia on git.wikimedia.org and the primary development of the official iOS app recently moved from git.wikimedia.org to GitHub. Jack Phoenix (Contact) 22:16, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

Wikipedia for refugees
[edit]Hi Mobile team! In response to the thread on [Wikimedia-l] internet-in-a-boxs to the refugee camps?], here's something for you.
I wanted to show off our work on Vietnamese artists from an editathon to a refugee acquaintance, but couldn't do it, because we don't have categories on the mobile app. This fellow had very little education before coming to the US, and is self taught in three languages, so reading Wikipedia on his phone could be very useful for him.
Adding categories to the mobile app would make it possible to pull up all the Vietnamese artist biographies so he can look through them. I doubt my acquaintance, who works long hours, has access to a laptop. Without the categories, the suggestions at the bottom make the mobile app on a smartphone into more of a game or pastime for looking at photos, rather than a serious educational tool.
Adding categories would be a quick win in making the mobile phone more useful for refugees, and for others who only access by mobile. Djembayz (talk) 12:54, 10 September 2015 (UTC)
- People from the Android and iOS app teams might be able to give a more detailed response, but I'll note that there is a related Phabricator task at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T71984 ("Category view shows no articles in the mobile app"). Tbayer (WMF) (talk) 18:46, 11 September 2015 (UTC)
- Hi @Djembayz I'm also hoping we can do stuff with categories (and collections/watchlist) in the app soon. Commenting on the task @Tbayer (WMF) mentioned is one way to ensure your weight is added to the idea. Thanks for your feedback! BGerstle (WMF) (talk) 17:50, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

[edit]On this day
[edit]The android app is displaying a "on this day" card with a structured timeline of events for english, but not for other languages. How is this data extracted, so that we can implement this for other languages? Geraki (talk) 15:51, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
- I'd like to know, too. Amir E. Aharoni {{🌎🌍🌏}} 11:52, 20 October 2019 (UTC)
- I'm so sorry I didn't see this question!
- The 'onthisday' data is served via this rest endpoint. Here's an example of a call to the endpoint:
- The endpoint extracts this data by teasing out some structure from "day pages", like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_15.
- It's not a perfect approach - ideally we'll get this data from wikidata at some point (or use this endpoint to seed wikidata records for days of the year?) - but it's been useful in the mean time.
- The structure of these day pages varies a bit (or a lot) by language wiki, so I tried to abstract away the language logic. Here's a mirror of the file that contains the language specific logic used by the onthisday parser (which I wrote). I added handling for a few languages which, at the time, seemed to have a page for each day of the year, but I got side-tracked by other work since.
- I'd like to circle back and audit the state of all language wikis' day page coverage again. If a language has a page for every day of the year the parser isn't too hard to update iirc. I seem to remember it taking an hour or 2 per lang?
- Hope this helps!! MHurd (WMF) (talk) 03:40, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
- Hi @MHurd (WMF): and thank you for working on this!
- This topic was raised by a few Ukrainian Wikipedia users on Twitter here: they were quite disappointed that Ukrainian is not supported, while Russian is.
- We have standard pages for Ukrainian Wikipedia (actually Main page sections) named per Ukrainian MONTHNAMEGEN, e.g. uk:Вікіпедія:Проект:Цей день в історії/2 квітня for today.
- Can you please add them to processing, or is something we need to do to make them machine-readable? Thanks NickK (talk) 19:46, 2 April 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks! It's a start.
- Here's an idea for a future improvement: Instead of collecting month names and section names in all languages, could you make a standardized set of internal formats and names that could be used in all languages? For example, instead of "January 16, 2019" people would write "2016-01-16"? If people really want dates written in words in page titles, it could probably be handled with redirects.
- Another idea is to reuse the same ultramagical parser that automatically converts dates written with words into an internal presentation on Wikidata.
- And instead of section names, could it have HTML classes or ids that would be the same across all languages?
- Or maybe these section names could be made into a translatable file and translated on translatewiki? This would be far easier to contribute to than to submit Git pull requests to JS code. Amir E. Aharoni {{🌎🌍🌏}} 11:12, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
- Oh, and what about the other main page sections, such as "In the news"? Amir E. Aharoni {{🌎🌍🌏}} 11:14, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
- @MHurd (WMF) thank you. Please check this https://github.com/wikimedia/wikifeeds/pull/3/files
- @Amire80 the existing approach is ok since it doesn't need wiki modifications. Using special structure, even in the form of templates, onwiki would make other tools break and make contribution harder.
Geraki (talk) 11:33, 16 January 2020 (UTC)- Well, yeah, that's the nature of change :)
- Making it more uniform will make it easier to do for all languages. Currently, it can be done only for languages that created their own structure and submitted a Git patch.I propose to reduce the number of steps by making the Git patch unnecessary. Amir E. Aharoni {{🌎🌍🌏}} 11:55, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

To add new language in mobile app
[edit]Do I need to file a new task at Phabricator to include Shan Wikipedia in Wikipedia mobile app? Ninja✮Strikers «☎» 16:11, 20 June 2019 (UTC)
- The Shan Wikipedia is available in the Android app. I can find it by the name "Shan" if I go to the English Wikipedia article "Wikipedia" and click on the A文 button, then I can find it by the English name "Shan".
- However, if I go to the app settings and try to add this language as a "Wikipedia language", then I cannot find it by the name "Shan", although I can find it by the language code "shn". I reported it as a bug: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T235972 Amir E. Aharoni {{🌎🌍🌏}} 11:51, 20 October 2019 (UTC)
Selecting a different UI language
[edit]By default, the app is shown in the language of the device, as it is with most mobile apps.
As far as I can recall, in the past it was possible to select a different language to use for the user interface. This is particularly needed for languages that are not supported as UI languages on devices. I cannot find such an option now. It's possible to select it for the content language, but not for the user interface. Amir E. Aharoni {{🌎🌍🌏}} 11:54, 20 October 2019 (UTC)

Has the team stopped hanging out in IRC?
[edit]Hi,
The mobile app team used to respond to queries in the #wikimedia-mobile channel. It looks like this is not the case anymore. I recently tried to get a clarification in the IRC twice and didn't receive any responses both the time.
Is this discussion page considered a better place to contact the mobile app team for any clarifications or is there some other point of communication? Kaartic [talk] 10:53, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Kaartic,
- The team still hangs out on IRC but we failed to respond to your question. Generally, it's easier for us to respond asynchronously here or on Phabricator. In this case, where your question was about incorrect data in the app, I'd suggest filing it on the Android team's backlog on Phabricator. JoeWalsh (WMF) (talk) 19:07, 3 February 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the update! I was reluctant to do that as I previously thought "Suggested edits" was an alpha only feaute. Looks like its available even in the production version.
- That said, I'm seeing consistent values for pageviews now. I don't see any drop in paveviews all of a sudden (which is what I observed before). I'll file a task if I come across it again in the future. Kaartic [talk] 05:07, 4 February 2020 (UTC)
Header-Image from Wikidata
[edit]Hi,
the mobile app (both android and iOS) automatically shows a Picture / Logo as a Header-Image of Articles, if there is one at Wikidata.
Unfortunately with logos, this doesn't look very good, as the app zooms in and therefore crops some parts of the logo (see Screenshot – tested with the german article HateAid with this wikidata-item.
On mobile (or pc) browsers the logo is just shown at the infobox, as it is intended – and with correct dimensions. If an article's wikidata item has no logo/picture, the app doesn't show a header-image, which in the case of my screenshot would look better.
Do you have an idea on how to fix this (except from removing the logo from wikidata, which would remove the header-image completely)? Is there a setting that makes the app not zoom-in?

- Unfortunately, the images don't actually come from Wikidata but are selected by the PageImages extension. This makes it more difficult to handle, but we might find some workaround, i.e. "SVG of a certain size" or something like that. Johan (WMF) (talk) 18:34, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

iOS bug not handled in app
[edit]I wanted to point out phab:T212610 here. Basically, because of a long-known iOS bug (or anomaly), CSS tooltips remain sticky on mobile devices. Apparently, the mobile version (.m domain) is able to handle the problem well; the iOS app however behaves just like the desktop version. I feel like that should be fixed quickly, after all it is specifically the iOS app! XanonymusX (talk) 17:58, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

On hatnotes
[edit]Hello! I wanted to report that on the Wikipedia Android app, hatnotes aren't shown. This is an issue because people going to, say, the "coronavirus" article won't see the "This article is about the group of viruses ..." hatnote and therefore may not understand why they can't find any information on the current pandemic. Ed [talk] [en:majestic titan] 04:53, 27 April 2020 (UTC)
- This will be fixed as soon as the next version of the Android app is released. You can test it in the beta version, of you want to see how it works.

Beware tagging images
[edit]I've been adding tags to images from the suggested edits section in the Android app. Just trying to do my part. I've been a user and reader for several years, occasionally donating when I can. Now that we all have extra time on our hands, I thought, why not help the site I use everyday. It's actually been really fun tagging the images from the suggested edits tab on the App. I would tag a few, later on I would get notified about my contributions. I have to say I really do like helping, even if it's just a little.
Wikipedia would suggest images/photos, I would spend a few minutes researching a tag. Making sure that it was actually adding usefulness to the image. I did a few around noon today, expecting to see those added to my small number of contributions (quite proud of 😁). This evening the user/Admin A.Savin left the message on my user talk page "Please do not contribute nonsense-edits. Vandalism is not appreciated." I couldn't figure out what I did that would make one of the Admins think this. I'm new to editing and don't have anything of a profile, but I can't help but to think if I ever try editing/tagging anything again that required approval would be biased. I know that's what I would think if I looked at a new users edit and saw that. Now the only thing on my user talk page is this message blaming me for doing something I would never do. I wish they could have just fixed it and messaged me about my mistake. I'll try tagging again tomorrow. If anyone looks at my edits could you please suggest what I'm doing wrong. Recurringintensity (talk) 05:25, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
- Hi @Recurringintensity. First, let me thank you for your edits and your desire to help Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. It's appreciated. The problem here isn't you, but the suggestions you've been given.
- In short, this is a new feature (still in beta) and we've been testing it, hoping that it would be a good way to help newcomers edit. Depicts (the tags) is a new feature, and the computer-aided tagging even newer. It's become clear that there's a disconnect between what the computer-aided tagging suggests and what the existing community of editors who are looking after Commons expect. The suggestions have been fairly general: railway, railway station and so on, but the community wants the new feature to be more specific: Peterborough railway station. This means that you've been caught in between, doing your best, given the material you've been given. We're currently addressing this by moving away from the automatic suggestions, and steering users towards the information about the files. People like you, who have been testing the feature, have been crucial in making us understand what we need to do development-wise. Thank you. Johan (WMF) (talk) 11:36, 11 May 2020 (UTC)

[edit]They could create applications for the other projects as well. It is common for several news sources to create applications. It would be nice for Wikinews to have one too. 179.240.185.116 (talk) 19:59, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
- There's a Wikimedia Commons app that's developed by volunteer developers:
- Likewise, I think a Wikinews app is far more likely to happen as a volunteer effort than as a Foundation project, unfortunately. The existing apps are open source, of course, and anyone could build on them. Johan (WMF) (talk) 00:36, 24 June 2020 (UTC)
Too many open tabs
[edit]I am not sure if this is the right place to discuss features of the Android app. I really love Wikipedia and the app and thus I have 70 tabs open. - Hello,
- For Android 4.4 and below, our Android app hasn't been supported for quite a while, and is no longer guaranteed to work. It is likely that our Operations team has updated some security settings on our servers, which is preventing very old versions of the app from connecting successfully. Unfortunately we do not plan on making further updates or security backports to support KitKat and lower, since these versions of Android have reached end-of-life long ago, and no longer get security updates from Google itself. DBrant (WMF) (talk) 14:00, 8 August 2020 (UTC)
- Hi, i have pixel 5, 3 weeks ago wikipedia app works no longer, all of a sudden. After entering second letter in search field, an error occurs in english and german. Reinstalling app and rebooting did not help either. 85.18.8.185 (talk) 08:55, 29 August 2021 (UTC)
- Are you able to tell us which version of Android you're using? Johan (WMF) (talk) 11:24, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
- The timing of these "server updates" is rather indifferent to what's going on in the world. In many areas, due to disease and job loss, people cannot afford to buy new phones, or even venture out to retailers (should any still be open) to risk their health searching for new new technology. I would have thought more consideration might have been made before cutting users off with no regard to the global situation. I might anticipate that when Wikipedia's typical requests for donations appear, they may be met with equal indifference. 2600:1700:B681:1A00:6139:5CD3:3D1B:15B1 (talk) 15:07, 10 August 2020 (UTC)
- Are you still able to access Wikipedia in your regular Web Browser app on your device? DBrant (WMF) (talk) 16:10, 10 August 2020 (UTC)
- Hello, I have the same problem and do not understand why a simple app does not work anymore. What is the point of changing things (which work fine) all the time just for the sake of change. Once things then do not work anymore the "security update" excuse is used - as if a wikipedia search was a security risk. I will not buy a new tablet, but will stop making my donation each year. 121.217.172.129 (talk) 11:33, 13 August 2020 (UTC)
- It is the same for me exactly. Any changes i do have no result. I can access wikipedia by using a browser, but the App is not working. I have Android 4.4.2.
- This is unfortunate, as i used the App very frequently and it is not as nice to use wikipedia through a mobile browser. It would be very nice if you could fix that error. I always get the message "Es ist ein Fehler aufgetreten". No page gets displayed at all. Reinstallation of the app does not change anything unfortunately. 94.220.74.38 (talk) 06:29, 18 August 2020 (UTC)
- Same problem here. It does not work on Chrome either. However, WikiWand is actually working for me, so I just go through that.

- We'll fix the connection issue for Android 4.4 by adding Google Play Services, which should allow KitKat users to continue using the app. We're aiming for September 15. Johan (WMF) (talk) 21:43, 8 September 2020 (UTC)

- Just checking, has this worked for anyone yet? If so, what version are you running and where can it be downloaded? I see a new version (wikipedia-2.7.50332-r-2020-09-28) is out, but it does not appear in Google Play on KitKat phone, and the its downloaded .APK will not install. Thanks. 2600:1700:B681:1A00:E180:A9E0:2087:631E (talk) 13:47, 30 September 2020 (UTC)
- Still not working on my KitKat tablet. There were no updates to the app in September that fixed this.
- A very bad move for Wikipedia, imagine how many million people around the world with older devices cannot access it easily now. 177.25.84.65 (talk) 15:05, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
- There was an unfortunate delay in this. It should soon be fixed. We'll update this thread as soon as it has been. Johan (WMF) (talk) 04:39, 2 October 2020 (UTC)
- Hi folks, we have made an update that should solve the connection issues on older versions of Android. Please check the Play Store for an updated version of the app, and let us know if there are any further issues. DBrant (WMF) (talk) 20:01, 2 October 2020 (UTC)
- Just installed the update and everything is back to normal. Great! 177.25.84.65 (talk) 13:35, 3 October 2020 (UTC)
- I installed the update and it's certainly an improvement so thank you. One thing though, when viewing an article, touching a picture does not go to the bigger stand-alone image but instead gives a black screen that says (!) "This page does not exist" with a "GO BACK" button. Tried with several articles and same behaviour every time. I checked with a friend and the image displays normally on Marshmallow so maybe still a Kitkat issue. Don't know if that's an easy fix but at least articles load now. 2600:1700:B681:1A00:E180:A9E0:2087:631E (talk) 01:33, 4 October 2020 (UTC)

- I don't know if this is somewhat related to the above problem, but the Wikipedia app on my iPod Touch (v. 5.1.1 on iOS 8.4) is not working as it should as of yesterday my time zone. Searching anything results in "Request failed..." cannot log in either. The app on my iPad mini (v5.7.2 on iOS 9.3.5) is working fine. Did anything change on the API? Nanami Kamimura (talk) 07:00, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- No change on our side. From the error it sounds like issues connecting to the network or our servers. Can you confirm you can reach wikipedia.org from Safari on your phone? 99.124.153.135 (talk) 17:01, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- Network connection is fine. Can also reach Wikipedia.org through an old version of Chrome (47.0.2526.107, the latest version compatible by iOS 8.4). However on stock Safari (again on iOS 8.4), I get this "Your Browser's Connection Security is Outdated" page instead. Nanami Kamimura (talk) 17:39, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
Start a search on the same tab
[edit]When i start a search with an article open, the app will open on a new tab. I find this annoying, because eventually i'll get a lot of tabs open. I have to keep closing them periodically. When i search for a new subject, i'm no longer interested in the last an when i am i can open a new tab by myself. I think the default behavior should be to open the new article in the same tab or at least to have a setting that allowed that. It would also be more similar to the way mobile browsers (on Android) behave and thus a simpler to understand and more consistent experience across apps. - The Wikipedia communities have very long experience of handling vandalism and mistakes on the wikis. We, as app developers, are merely supplying writing tools.
- In short, a) there are filters in place, b) there are bots removing obvious vandalism, c) recent changes are constantly patrolled, d) articles are typically watched by people familiar with the subject, in case something less obvious passes through the recent changes patrolling. Admins on the wiki might block the person doing the editing, in case it's intentionally wrong. Johan (WMF) (talk) 10:16, 17 August 2020 (UTC)

"Find in page" function should be more easily accessible (Android App)
[edit]In a recent release of the Wikipedia app for Android, a new bottom toolbar was introduced. While this toolbar is more in line with current Android UX standards, a function was removed that I would consider crucial to using Wikipedia on a mobile device: searching text inside an article, i.e. "Find in page" (German: "In Seite finden").
Obviously, UI elements located at the top of an app are more difficult to reach than the ones located at the bottom. That's why functions used often should be accessible from the bottom toolbar rather than from the top "..." menu.
One way to accomplish this might be to implement a long-press functionality for the bottom toolbar search butten, i.e. short-pressing the button opens the article search function while long-pressing opens an overlay input field that allows searching inside the page.
I'd be interested to hear your opinion. Janw (talk) 13:06, 4 October 2020 (UTC)

[edit]Please remove the option to edit Wikidata descriptions. If an article is protected because of vandalism, vandals will continue to edit the Wikidata description. Keeping multiple pages open on RAM (Android App)
[edit]I use the Wikipedia app almost every day and one issue that I've encountered is this: The moment another tab is brought to the front, the previous tab is emptied from the RAM, so if you go back to it, it will take a few moments before it's loaded again. The problem is, if you want to compare some data between two pages, let's say the factsheet of two cities, it will be annoyingly slow, and every time you switch between tabs, you have to wait for it to reload and go back to the same position in the page. It would be really helpful to have the option in the settings to keep the tabs actively open (on the RAM) as long as the app hasn't been closed. Thank you for a great job! 2A02:908:69C:86E0:EDF5:E65A:2123:7559 (talk) 11:42, 27 February 2021 (UTC)

Please make Wiktionary Read & Edit app to obtain multilingual translations for Wikifunctions. (atleast a "lite" app)
[edit]A Wiktionary app is required and very much crucial. The old app had 1 million+ downloads
Multilingual content for the new Abstract Wikipedia is very much needed. Wiktionaries have very less multilingual content even though the individual language versions have enough native language entries.
Wiktionary would greatly benefit from an editing App as the literature search needed is very simple to add content to entries. Adding translations would be conveniently done from a smartphone.
Wiktionary do not even have most of the translations already available as Wikidata entry labels. An app that also fetch from Wikidata Labels and also interact with Wikidata Lexeme space would be hugely beneficial.
Wiktionary is very suitable for a mobile editing App. Please make one. Thank you! Vis M (talk) 20:30, 17 April 2021 (UTC)

No ability to add edit summary when adding short description
[edit]It appears that there is no way to add an edit summary when adding/modifying a short description via the app, nor is there any automatic edit summary for these actions. iOS and Android Apps -- In the News and Did You Know
[edit]Greetings,
On behalf of the English Wikipedia's In the News (WP:ITN) and Did You Know (WP:DYK) I wanted to get in touch with the team that works on the official iOS and Android apps. Specifically, I want to get a connect going to understand some of the WP:DYK and WP:ITN work can be featured on the homescreen of the iOS and Android apps.
- Today, we see that content from the WP:DYK panel on the Web Mainpage does not make its way to either the iOS or Android apps -- can we help with the content either curated or content as-is for you to think through inclusion in the apps? We have a robust screening process and pipeline to get the WP:DYK hooks as they are called onto the homepage. Typically 10 hooks are promoted to the homepage and are rotated at either 12 hour or 24 hour intervals. The first hook has an accompanying picture while the others are pure text.
- I also see that you do parse our WP:ITN panel to pick up the news blurbs. But, I also wanted to point you to the Recent Deaths carousel that you see at the bottom of the panel. Lot of good work goes into getting biographies into a solid state and are showcased in the panel.
Across both 1 and 2 from above, a sound screening process exists that ensure that the articles being promoted are of quality levels commensurate with the homepage! i.e. you will not see any issues with the content that is being showcased there.
Would greatly appreciate any leads on whom we can engage to get a conversation going regarding both of these topics. Thanks in advance. Ktin (talk) 04:52, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
- Hey @Ktin, I'll bring this up with the iOS team. Johan (WMF) (talk) 14:25, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks much @Johan (WMF). Looking forward to a great partnership! Ktin (talk) 04:24, 25 January 2022 (UTC)
- I'm a regular user of the iOS app and agree that DYK would be a good addition as it is deliberately designed to hook and engage readers. Each set tends to have 8 hooks, which might be too many for the app so bear in mind that the first is always a picture hook and the last is usually chosen to be quirky so those two might be given more prominence.
- The Recent Deaths feature is not so important because, if the person is famous, such as Meat Loaf or Betty White, then they will usually appear in the Top read section. And if they are not famous, then readers are not likely to be interested. ITN doesn't filter recent deaths for significance and so lots of them are quite humdrum. Andrew Davidson (talk) 14:56, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for reaching out @Ktin, and sorry for the slow response. I am the Group Product Manager for the Apps. First, I want to say we're definitely aware of the DYK content and totally agree it would make a perfect addition to the feed, both in English and many other languages. Original plans for the feed actually included DYK as a content item!
- The "death carousel" is a bit more fraught, as while we know how vital Wikipedia is to the celebrity death cycle, it also puts tragic content consistently front and center in a way that could be off putting to some users. Adding it as optional content certainly makes sense.
- Unfortunately right now there are no teams dedicated to the feed system and adding new elements to it. That may change in the upcoming annual plan and I will bring your request and any related phab tickets to those discussions to show editor interest for this years plans. JMinor (WMF) (talk) 23:21, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks @JMinor (WMF).
- Re: DYK. Agree. Please feel free to let us know if you need any additional information. E.g. there might be a way for you to select a subset of the 8ish hooks that we have in a manner that feeds into the app quite well from a visual perspective so that you do not have screen overflows. I almost forgot that you build for multiple languages at the same time - so, maybe there might be some coordination that might be needed.
- Re: ITNRD. I hear you that having a screen filled with loads of recently deceased folks might make the app seem like an obituary app and might be off-putting for some users. There might be some visual representation with more horizontal swipes that might help introduce the content, without making it take too much of the vertical space. But, I do agree that it might require some thinking on how best to consider. As you can see this is a project that I am very passionate about because a lot (and I mean a lot) of good work goes in to ensure that articles are improved. And, these are not even run of the mill celebrities. Appreciate your consideration when you meet as a team for the new year planning.
- Irrespective of these two, if you want to have a FGD or a similar session with the regular editors of the homepage content as you build the app, I am happy to go round up a few regulars and request their presence on a virtual call with you and your team there.
- Also, while I have you here, can I ask a piece of input? One of the things I track on the homepage is the number of visits / clicks. If this is not a confidential number - do you have visibility on the number of feed page users (daily / monthly) on the iOS / Android apps?
- Thanks again and I wish you well. Ktin (talk) 23:57, 1 February 2022 (UTC)

3 Problems
[edit]Hello App-Team,
thank you for the App, but I have to say that there are some things that dont work good. It would be great to fix it. To me I wanna to say that I am mainly in the German Wikipedia and my English isnt perfect.
1) The App shows the Articles of the day, in German: "Artikel des Tages" Thats ok, but you use the first image in the article and not the image who is on the site I linked. Why? Please use the images the users say: "That is for Artikel des Tages" the better picture than the first. For example: Focke-Wulf Ta 154 was Artikel des Tages. On the site there was blak/white the image Commons: File:Profil_Focke-Wulf_Ta_154_II.png and not the first. But on the App there was the first image in the article. Its ok that the picture is the first in the article, but the App said: Oh look there is a great article and here is a picture with an Swastika. That isnt cool. Its ok thats on the article, but we dont have to show this picture wenn people are not directly intereted.
2) In the German Wikipedia there are „gesichtete Versionen“, so there Accounts with the ability to „sight“ on the one hand. On the other hand there are accounts who cannot spam or make vandalism. But on the App there is always the newest version, but not the newest sighted version. Please show only „gesichtete Versionen“.
3) All the tim I am logged in. Often I am in the case that I want to look for the watchlist, but when I touch at the field „Beobachtungsliste“ than it dont work. My workaround is to touch on a article to open the article, than go back and than go to the watchlist. I have no idea why, but thats my reality.
Thank you that I can give my feedback. It would be very great when you fix these 3 points :) PS: I had to deleted some links because ⧼abusefilter-warning-linkspam⧽ --Fan-vom-Wiki (talk) 16:17, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for your feedback and for bringing these concerns to our attention. We appreciate your support and understanding as we work towards improving the Wikipedia app experience. I would like to address each of your points individually:
- Regarding the "Artikel des Tages" (Article of the Day) feature, we understand your concern about the displayed images. The images used in the app are generally the first images found within the articles. There’s a ticket on our software tracking system, Phabricator, that’s related to your suggestion. We strive to provide a visually engaging experience while maintaining the integrity and appropriateness of the content. However, we acknowledge the importance of considering user preferences when it comes to selecting images for this feature. Please check this link on Wikipedia: Featured article criteria to know more about how and why this happens.
- We are aware of the existence of "gesichtete Versionen" (sighted versions) in the German Wikipedia; you can check this ticket on Phabricator for more detailed information.
- We apologize for the inconvenience you have experienced when accessing the watchlist on the app. We understand the frustration caused by the described issue and appreciate you sharing your workaround. Could you kindly let us know which version of the app you are using, whether it is the Android or iOS version?
We value your feedback, as it helps us identify areas for improvement and prioritize our efforts accordingly. Rest assured, we are committed to enhancing the app and delivering a better user experience. Your input is invaluable in this process, and we thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and suggestions. If you have any further questions or additional feedback, please don't hesitate to reach out. We appreciate your comments and feedback. ARamadan-WMF (talk) 09:24, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
- @ARamadan-WMF There is no watchlist on iOS – or is it now? with best wishes from VINCENZO1492 13:48, 15 August 2023 (UTC)

App menu redirect to browser
[edit]When I use the Wikipedia app (on Android) there is a bottom-border menu that includes a hamburger button labelled 'More'. When I select this, it presents six options, starting with my own user page, and finishing with 'Donate'. Of these six, four are wikilinks that open in the app, and 'Donate' is a URL since it opens a page outside Wikipedia. What annoys me is that the first link, to my own user page, is also a URL, so it opens in a browser. Why is this? If I want to use the browser interface, I can decide that for myself, but if I've chosen to use the app, why would it send me over to the browser?
I know that can get there via my user talk page in one extra click, but...
Not a major issue, just a persistent niggle. Verbarson (talk) 09:54, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
- Hello @Verbarson,
- Thank you for sharing your feedback about the behavior of the 'More' menu in the app. We understand your concern regarding the user page link opening in a browser instead of within the app.
- I wanted to let you know that your suggestion has been taken seriously, and we value your input in enhancing the app's user experience. To address this issue, I have created a ticket to investigate and consider implementing a solution that keeps the user page link within the app, providing a seamless browsing experience.
- Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts, and if you have any further suggestions or encounter any other issues, please don't hesitate to reach out. Your input is valuable to us. ARamadan-WMF (talk) 10:12, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
- Hello @Verbarson, with another update!
- We appreciate your patience and wanted to inform you that the issue you raised regarding the 'More' menu behavior is currently under active development.
- We're working diligently to ensure that the user page link will open within the app, offering a smoother experience.
- Expect this enhancement to arrive very soon. ARamadan-WMF (talk) 15:36, 1 September 2023 (UTC)
What does 'Views' mean?
[edit]On the App there is a row of buttons at the foot of the page. The fourth button is 'Edits'. When I press it I get the '''Edits''' page, with a couple of totals at top left. '4016 Contributions' is reasonable, being close to my total on the xtools 'Edit counts' page. But where does '2697 Views' come from, or what sort of views does it refer to? I can't see any similar total on 'Edit counts'. Verbarson (talk) 22:15, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hello @Verbarson,
- Thank you for reaching out and for your inquiry regarding the 'Edits' page on the Wikipedia mobile app. We appreciate your interest in understanding the statistics displayed there.
- The '2697 Views' you see on the 'Edits' page of the app refers to the total number of page views for articles you have edited or contributed to.
- It reflects how many times the articles you've edited or contributed to have been viewed by other users; the number of page views (in the last 30 days) of the last 10 articles to which you have added Wikidata descriptions.
- If you have any further questions or if there's anything else you'd like to know about the app's features or statistics, please feel free to ask. ARamadan-WMF (talk) 16:04, 1 September 2023 (UTC)
Suggested edits in Android alpha version
[edit]When trying to translate the Android app, the fact that I cannot see how the messages appear is annoying and can lead to incorrect translations. Could it be set that all suggested edits become available in the alpha version at the same time as they become translatable, i.e. as soon as the pull request is merged? Of course, this shouldn’t be that way in the release version, but it would help a lot in the alpha version. The alpha version already has some differences, like the ability to do as if I was blocked. Tacsipacsi (talk) 10:13, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
- Hello @Tacsipacsi,
- Thank you for sharing your feedback with us.
- We've gone ahead and created a ticket for your suggestion. If you'd like to stay updated on its progress and any further actions, you can track this ticket on our issue request tracking software, Phabricator, using this link:
- Also, we would like to invite you for our upcoming office hour on October 27th. We will discuss our current and future projects and, of course, to hear your thoughts. You can find all the details on the office hour's page Wikimedia Apps/Office Hours.
- Thanks for being part of our awesome community! ARamadan-WMF (talk) 12:56, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for creating the Phabricator task! Subscribed.
- I prefer written communication on Wikimedia, so I don’t plan to attend the office hours; thanks for the suggestion anyways. Tacsipacsi (talk) 16:51, 7 October 2023 (UTC)
100 tab limit question
[edit]Hi, just wondering, since google has provided no answers: I have over 100 tabs open on the android one, and I accidentally opened another without deleting one. So which tab gets automatically deleted? Is it possible also to find a list of "recently closed tabs"? Thank you in advance. AnyGuy (talk) 10:58, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, @AnyGuy,
- If you exceed 100 tabs on Android, opening a new one will cause the oldest tab (indexed as 0) to be automatically deleted.
- There are ongoing plans to revamp the tab storage system to accommodate more than 100 tabs. You can find more information about these plans at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T353656. ARamadan-WMF (talk) 14:38, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you. Is there also a way to find a recently closed tab? AnyGuy (talk) 17:00, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
- Actually no, once a tab is closed, it cannot be reopened or accessed again. ARamadan-WMF (talk) 06:41, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
Text to speech and other accessible functions.
[edit]Have y'all considered adding accessibility functions to the app? In particular TTS would be useful for me. Controls like the app @ voice aloud reader on Android would be awesome.
If not that, then at a minimum, please consider make it possible to toggle citations on and off so I don't have to hear "open parentheses # close parentheses" for every dang citation while using the speak selection tool. Mintsenior (talk) 12:20, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hello @Mintsenior,
- YES, we're actually considering this; this is the main ticket that we're using for updates in implementing text to speech:
- https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T126889, please follow it so you can be updated for any upcoming work we do.
- Appreciating your interest and patience as we work to improve the accessibility of the Wikipedia app for you and all users. ARamadan-WMF (talk) 14:15, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
- Ah. I see. Thank you.
- >Abandoned in 2016
- I suppose this is as good a motivation to learn to code as any.
- If I wanted to propose screen reader compatibility as an alternative stop back measure,
- Don't really have coding experience. Mintsenior (talk) 22:22, 2 April 2024 (UTC)
- Currently, we're engaged in our yearly planning phase, during which big number of features have been proposed' the apps team is evaluating these requests in alignment with the organizational objectives established in collaboration with our communities.
- Please subscrie to the ticket I sent eralier to be updated with any actions that will be added to it and I suggest adding the Community Wishlist to your watchlist. ARamadan-WMF (talk) 01:52, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
Wikipedia app explainations error 404
[edit]Hello, In the wikipédia Android app, the link to explain how to make micro contribution is dead https://m.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Apps/Suggested_edits/fr 93.7.225.151 (talk) 06:14, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the notice! I’ve opened https://github.com/wikimedia/apps-android-wikipedia/pull/4586 to fix the link when using the app in English; the French version can be fixed after that. (In case you couldn’t find the help page: it’s at Wikimedia Apps/Android Suggested edits/fr.) Tacsipacsi (talk) 21:58, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
- The links have been fixed both in English and French; they should be included in the next version. Tacsipacsi (talk) 21:07, 6 April 2024 (UTC)
The issue with serif
[edit]Hi there! I've faced with an issue regarding the Chinese hieroglyphics in the app. It's always just in the sans-serif font, whether I changed it to the serif or not. However, it effects only on the Chinese signs itself (the Japanese kanji only, the Korean hancha only, etc.) and those symbols which are at non-hieroglyphic wikis. For example, the switching doesn't work with symbols at an English wikipage with characters, but works at Chinese or Japanese one. 178.51.202.50 (talk) 22:57, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hello,
- I'm Amal Ramadan, a Senior Movement Communications Specialist supporting the mobile apps team. Thank you for reaching out regarding the issue with Chinese hieroglyphics in the app. To assist you better, could you please provide screenshots or a screen recording demonstrating the problem you're experiencing? Please send them to android-support@wikimedia.org OR iOS-support@wikimedia.org based on your device.
- This will help us determine if the issue lies within the Android system or if it requires font adjustments within the app.
- Thank you. ARamadan-WMF (talk) 18:31, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
OSM Location map dsiplays very badly in app
[edit]The template en:OSM Location map, which used to use a 'Graph:' display-engine before that was turned off, is now back through a combination of <mapframe> and inline css. It is now working well in standard browsers, has minor postioning issues in browser mobile mode, and gets badly mangled within the Android app. The problem is that the template relies on mapframe with a matching overlay <div>, which positions the various graphical and text elements onto the basemap. However the app re-sizes and centers the mapframe basemap, and then appears to use the left edge and the original scale for the overlays, so that they have the wrong origin and the wrong scale. Narrow maps that need little scaling are affected less, but even a 350px map such as that at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isca_Augusta en:Isca Augusta ends up all over the place, and the map at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leicester#Geography is not a pretty site. There are currently 5,600 pages with OSM Location maps, so a solution is clearly desirable. If, for example, there was a way of stopping the <mapframe> from re-sizing, and ensuring both items started at the same edge, that might be one option, or (sounds tricky to me) ensuring all the css is scaled to the same as basemap. Any suggestions would be useful. Thanks. RobinLeicester (talk) 14:44, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hello @RobinLeicester,
- Could you please share some screenshots with us at any of our support email addresses:
