New sidebar not showing after activating Vector 2022
I recently enabled Vector 2022 in my local city wiki. However, the main menu sidebar does not change to the new layout and the toolbox is also not moved to the right sidebar. I'm a bit lost on what's going wrong here... My changes to Common.css should not have an impact as far as I can see. Using MW 1.39, fresh download of the Vector skin. Maybe someone has an idea how to fix this. Thanks in advance! --GeroO (talk) 09:15, 20 March 2025 (UTC)
Sticky header for anonymous users
Vector 2022 has been deployed a long time ago on many Wikipedias. Yet the sticky header is still available only for registered users. Will it ever get deployed for anonymous users as well? --Paloi Sciurala (talk|contribs) 16:03, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
- Hey @Paloi Sciurala, thanks for the question.
- Right now, it's difficult to tell. We aren't focusing on tweaking the skin. Instead, this year, our focus is on Content Discovery.
- We are also talking about the plan for the next year, and our part there is Consumer Experiences (WE3). Maybe (but this is just my take) such tweaks could be made part of the Key result WE3.3 (and 3.2, if we add the Donate button there, too). I'd like to encourage you to comment on the draft plan on Meta. Many people from the Foundation will see there that community members are asking about it, and they may get inspired.
- Thank you! SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 09:51, 23 March 2025 (UTC)

'vector-main-menu-pinned' for unregister users?
Hi!
Is there a legal way to display the main menu on all pages for unregistered users. I couldn't find any other way than commenting out Constants::REQUIREMENT_LOGGED_IN in FeatureManagerFactory.php... but I don't think that's the best way. Rogue Vor tex (talk) 20:32, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
Uncommanded change of skin
I have set vector 2010 as my skin for almost any wikimedia project. Since yesterday my Skin was changed to the (ugly) 2022 version. While I understand that the new skin is the only one developed, why do you force it upon the users? Adtonko (talk) 18:23, 2 April 2025 (UTC)
- I’ve set Vector 2010 in Special:GlobalPreferences, and have never experienced such problems. If you want to never see Vector 2022, I suggest you to do so as well.
- By the way, can it be that you experienced this problem on a wiki that switched to Vector 2022 just yesterday? Local preferences (i.e. those not set on Special:GlobalPreferences) are not stored if they are default, so if you select Vector 2010 on a Vector 2010 wiki, nothing will be stored, and thus you’ll get Vector 2022 once the wiki switches to Vector 2022. As far as I’m aware, this is done to reduce the database size – most preferences never change defaults, and if defaults were also stored in the database, the already way too big database table would be orders of magnitude larger. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 23:33, 2 April 2025 (UTC)
- Which wiki you contribute to by the way? Depotadore (talk) 11:31, 5 April 2025 (UTC)
- was that directed at me? Sorry for the late reply. My Home Wiki is the german one. Adtonko (talk) 06:22, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
Keeping Vector 2010--but ditching Vector 2022--on a third-party wiki
If there's really a means of doing so--tried hiding the 2022 option on my site's Special:Preferences as founding bureaucrat, but that interface is still appearing in "useskin" mode--let me know in advance. (Already asked at Project:Support desk last month--ditto on Miraheze [where I'm hosted]--but no replies [or pointers] so far.) --Slgrandson (talk) 15:58, 19 June 2025 (UTC)
- useskin explicitly bypasses available skins and enables you to access any installed skins. There are various historic reasons for this. But everything is possible if you modify the code, so I advise that route. —TheDJ (Not WMF) (talk • contribs) 12:14, 26 June 2025 (UTC)
Display title of sections in header scheme in Vector 2022
Hi, sorry if there is some answer in some other topic, I perhaps do not have the good keyword. Is there a way to display the title of sections in the header of an article using Vector 2022? Regards Lupin~fr (talk) 09:26, 30 May 2025 (UTC)
- Hey @Lupin~fr, we don't support this (as in, it's not possible to just enable/disable it), and if it was possible to hack something together to enable as a gadget, it'd require some work, which we can't commit to now. So… no, I can't say there is a way to do that. SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 23:16, 2 June 2025 (UTC)
- Oh, thank you for your answer @SGrabarczuk (WMF): . In fact I was said I can just click on the icon to the left of the title to make titles of section appear, it solved my problem! Lupin~fr (talk) 23:53, 1 July 2025 (UTC)

Why is there a "Donate" button shown in the Finnish Wikipedia?
Wikimedia Foundation is not allowed to ask for donations in Finland, and thus banners begging for donations haven't been shown in the Finnish Wikipedia, or for Finnish users of other Wikipedias, for years. However, in Vector 2022, logged off users are shown a "Donate" -button ("Lahjoitukset" in Finnish) in the upper right corner, next to the "Create account" button. Why? Clicking the button from a Finnish IP-address lands the user on this page, which just explains the users that they can't donate.
I suggest that the "Donate" -button is hidden from Finnish users, since it is completely pointless for them. Valtaisa varpunen (talk) 17:03, 31 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Valtaisa varpunen: You can refer to Reading/Web/Improving Donation Touchpoints to understand why there is a "Donate" button. However, since Finnish users cannot donate, I agree that the button may cause some confusion. cc @SGrabarczuk (WMF). SCP-2000 (talk) 14:35, 22 June 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks @SCP-2000 for the ping. The team talked about this some time ago, and I thought that a reply had already been posted. I will ask them to chime in. SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 10:30, 23 June 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for the link, @SCP-2000, that explains why I've only noticed the donation button on Vector 2022 relatively recently. @OVasileva (WMF), it seems you know a lot about "Improving Donation Touchpoints": could you tell us why the donate button is shown to Finnish users too, and if it could be hidden, please? Math formula in table of contents looks broken under some user preferences
If I set my preference to dispaly math formula with SVG and a section title contains a math formula like , then the table of contents will contain a broken text like
- '"`UNIQ--postMath-00000001-QINU`"'?
and I cannot link the section properly. If math formula is displayed using MathML, the table of contents displays properly and a link like #1+1=2 works fine. 慈居 (talk) 18:40, 21 July 2025 (UTC)
Conditional formatting or text based on skin
Since Vector 2022 makes so many different changes to the interface, it seems like there would be many contexts where being able to detect which skin is being used to view a page (especially distinguishing between Vector 2022 and legacy Vector) would be very useful. For example, you might want to float an element to the right in Vector 2022 but not in legacy Vector because of an already floated-right ToC. Or on a help page, say, when discussing some UI component, it would be nice to have a way of selectively showing only text that is relevant to a skin that the reader is actually using. Is there some way of doing these things (for everyone on a wiki) without editing the sitewide CSS? (In particular, I'm talking about something along the lines of {{USERSKIN}} [a hypothetical magic word].) Given the nature of skins and the principle of separating style from content, I suspect not. - dcljr (talk) 08:48, 14 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Dcljr Editors should not make assumptions about skins or screen size at all, because they are not reliable assumptions to make. Both can change at any time. Templates can use Extension:TemplateStyles to conditionally modify their layout and styling. TemplateStyles can apply conditional formatting depending on the skin, but this should be used very sparingly. —TheDJ (Not WMF) (talk • contribs) 14:52, 14 August 2025 (UTC)
- What I'm talking about would not be assuming so much as tailoring. (Kind of the opposite of assuming, actually.) The fact that things can "change at any time" is beside the point. It is a fact, not an assumption, that some things are already presented very differently to users of different skins, so ignoring that fact is bound to cause problems sometimes. This would just provide a simple mechanism to avoid some of those problems. Anyway… I think we're done here. - dcljr (talk) 22:13, 14 August 2025 (UTC)
Why the Vector 2022 skin is optimized for mobile view in Wikifunctions but not in other wikis?
Hi. I have something that needs to be clear. How does Wikifunctions is the only wiki that have the Vector 2022 skin optimized for mobile view? In other wikis, it's not optimized for mobile view and we have to zoom the page to see the content, but in Wikifunctions we don't have to do that. Although I have already enabled the responsive mode in global preferences, but Wikifunctions is still the only wiki that has the new Vector skin for mobile optimized, it does no effects in other wikis. I have checked that wiki and it seems they don't use any gadgets or css to change the look of the interface. Nvdtn19 (talk) 18:10, 5 August 2025 (UTC)
- I also do not know but I came here to complain about this. Vector 2022 is unusable on main Wikipedia on mobile. I think the "intended solution" is to go to en.m.wikipedia.org instead; which is an annoying solution that frequently breaks in both directions, and seems unnecessary. Dingolover6969 (talk) 13:44, 4 September 2025 (UTC)
- By "frequently breaks in both directions" I mean: sometimes you visit a regular link on your phone and it doesn't redirect you to m so the page is borderline unusable AND ALSO when you send an m link to a desktop user they don't get redirected to regular Wikipedia so their reading experience is worse. M Wikipedia urls shouldn't be necessary at all in the current year, in my opinion. The theme should just be responsive correctly. If anyone reading can, pretty please fix this state of affairs. (Maybe Wikipedia just needs to update its version to latest or something; I don't know.) Dingolover6969 (talk) 13:53, 4 September 2025 (UTC)
- Neither "Enable responsive mode" nor "Enable limited width mode" in Skin preferences on English Wikipedia seem to do anything for this skin (I can confirm, conversely, that "Enable responsive mode" works for MinervaNeue there). Dingolover6969 (talk) 14:20, 4 September 2025 (UTC)
"Switch to old look" button
Is there any particular reason the "switch to old look" toggle is given such prominence on the sidebar? I very much appreciate the efforts made to accommodate users who prefer the Vector 2010 (I was one of those users until recently) but I can't help but feel that the emphasis given on the toggle almost encourages users to switch back, especially given the bolding. Is there an option to maybe remove the bolding or even remove the toggle as a whole? It's a bit distracting. I almost think I would've switched to the new skin earlier if I didn't feel like it was begging me to turn it off every time I tried it on. Loytra (talk) 06:07, 26 September 2025 (UTC)

- @Nvdtn19: : Hi there. We've got the special dynamic width setting enabled for Wikifunctions, because the content in the wiki is software-controlled and so works well. Other special wikis like Wikidata could easily enable this too, but for wikitext content wikis like the Wikipedias it's a rather risky change — people have been writing content for years based on some assumptions about how extremely wide content will be handled, and changing this would be a surprising, disruptive, upsetting event for some. Although I think it could happen, I don't think there's a wide-spread demand for it from the wider community (yet?), and I don't believe the Readers teams are focussed on this. For this wiki in particular, which is much smaller and more actively maintained by technical people, we could probably do it, but it might still be a little too disruptive for the taste of some, and it might be confusing for this wiki to behave different from the majority of wikis. Vector 2022: Pinned sidebar for anonymous users
Hello, thank you for the Vector 2022 skin! I love the slick design! Since settings like $wgDefaultUserOptions['vector-main-menu-pinned'] = 1; currently don't seem to have any effect on anonymous users, is there another way to achieve the default pinned menu state, like on https://sanat.csc.fi/ - maybe via MediaWiki:Common.js? Thanks, cheers and all the best! Till Kraemer (talk) 06:53, 3 November 2025 (UTC)
- PS: It seems to be that code. Till Kraemer (talk) 07:30, 3 November 2025 (UTC)

Remove ability to pin/unpin anything?
Would it be possible for the administrator to decide on where the various things go and remove the option to change them?
I'd like the following permanent settings - "Main menu" and "Appearance" hidden, but "Contents" pinned to sidebar.
Nearly all visitors are anonymous (which looks as though it may complicate things). Jonathan3 (talk) 11:32, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
"Main menu" submenus
The "Contents" thing has a ">" to press to expand to see sub-headings.
Is it possible to do similar for the "Main menu"? Thanks. Jonathan3 (talk) 11:38, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
font-family custom fonts
In at least 4 instances (ex. .mw-body h1), font-family is not taking browser settings of serif/sans-serif, but is overwriting with Linux Libertine, Georgia, Times,... with browser setting being last.
Please remove custom fonts from the theme CSS. A.kamburov (talk) 16:24, 12 January 2026 (UTC)
Is there a way to get rid of the sticky bar on top? (Vector 2022)
When logged in, on any article after scrolling down there's a relatively thick bar on top, with the search icon, menu icon, and Wikipedia logo on the left end, then on the right end the messages icon, history icon, watch icon (star), edit icon, language icon with count and dropdown, and user icon with dropdown. It obscures the top few lines of text and is a distraction when it slides in.
When not logged in, the only sticky element is the menu icon, in the far left corner. This is what I would prefer to have.
Short of straight-up blocking the bar with a content-blocking addon, I have not found a way to get rid of that element in Special:Preferences.
Please let me know if and how this is doable. 5ucur (talk) 00:51, 20 March 2026 (UTC)

Vector 2022 causes Preferences page to go dark mode
I am using MediaWiki version 1.43.5. We use Vector 2022 as the default skin. When I go to the Preferences page, it switches to dark mode ( I have the skin configured to use Light mode). It's not just me, this happens with every other user who is using the Vector 2022 skin + light mode.
We only see this behavior with the Vector 2022 skin--the Vector Legacy (2010), Citizen, Monobook, and Timeless skins do not go to dark mode when the Preferences page is visited.
I have made sure to use the latest download of the Vector skin. Any help in diagnosing and fixing this issue is appreciated!
Thank you! Jbubz (talk) 00:46, 24 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Jbubz This likely means that the server default for Vector is configured to use dark mode. When you are on preferences page (and login and create account), all user specific customizations get disabled and the page uses the server defaults. This is to avoid security problems and/or people locking themselves out of their accounts. —TheDJ (Not WMF) (talk • contribs) 12:52, 20 March 2026 (UTC)
Why isn't the Wikipedia 25th anniversary logo available in Vietnamese?
While languages like Chinese, English, and others are available, Vietnamese is not on Vector 2022 and 2010. Manhdeptraipro2114 (talk) 10:36, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
- Hello @Manhdeptraipro2114 The Wikipedia 25th logo is not universally applied to every wiki. Each wiki community has the liberty to decide whether they want to and for how long they will display it. There was a discussion on Vietnamese wiki about the 25th logo. If you wish to have the logo on Vietnamese wiki, the best thing to do is to talk to the community about this. Hope this helps!

When a language link is clicked..
This is noticed on Telugu Wikipedia, on Windows 11, in Chrome browser Version 146.0.7680.178 (Official Build) (64-bit).
When a language link is clicked with Control button pressed, the link opens in a new tab - as expected. But, simultaneously the link is opened in the current tab too, which is an unexpected behaviour. This has been noticed in the last two or three weeks. Please correct it so that the link opens ONLY in new tab.
