What are all those new ID tags for?

I notice that all rendered-html tags now have alphanumerical serial numbers as id= parameters, as in <dl id="mwBSs"><dd id="mwBSw"><ul id="mwBS0"><li id="mwBS4"><b id="mwBS8">Text</b></li></ul></dd></dl>. Also a lot of about="#mw..." tags have appeared, This inflates the rendered-html size considerably, and also increases the rendering CPU time usage by a factor of ≈8.
