Interwikis
[edit]First, thank you very much for this great tool !
I've created my first translated article from English to French, and I have a red interwiki link on the left sidebar : https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMD_F7 and I can't find it. This language was the first/default language on my Special:ContentTranslation page. Trizek from FR 14:07, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks Trizek.
- The red link is intended to highlight that an article you are reading does not exist in a language you can translate it to. Currently it is being shown in contexts where it does not make sense (such as when creating a new page or after publishing a translation), that is a bug and has been reported.
- From what you say, it seems that the red link was for a language you didn't expect. That may be an additional issue. Do you know which language it was? Pginer-WMF (talk) 16:06, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you Pau!
- The language is Bulgarian (bg). Trizek from FR 16:11, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the details. I have reported the issue for the engineers to look at it. Pginer-WMF (talk) 18:11, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
- Same thing for me. I have a red wikilink to bg in my left sidebar, but for all the articles I load on French Wikipedia (not only the ongoing translations). Simon Villeneuve (talk) 11:48, 3 April 2015 (UTC)
- Same for me, Simon. I've completed the Phabricator ticket. Trizek from FR 11:49, 3 April 2015 (UTC)
Translations in progress
[edit]I see three input forms on my Special:ContentTranslation page on frwp, but I can't see my previous (and unfinished) translations in this list. Is it normal? Trizek from FR 15:58, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
- I got the answer by myself: if you don't have finished a translation, don't hit the publish translation button. Just go back: the translation in progress will be saved and avaliable.
- It is not possible (yet?) to restart or modify a translation published with the tool. Trizek from FR 17:53, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
- @Trizek: Thanks for testing the tool, and participating here asking and answering questions (even your own!).
- Regarding auto-saving, we wanted to avoid users to have to think about repeatedly saving and making a distinction between saving your progress and completing it (and exposing the result to the world).
- Regarding continuing published translations, this is something that makes sense but we need to take into account how to deal with situations like the article being modified by another user. Since published translations are regular articles that do not keep the mapping information with the source article, it is not trivial to edit them again with Content Translation of their content has been modified. Pginer-WMF (talk) 19:37, 13 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks Pau!
- The autosaving message may be more visible. I didn't see it the first time. Trizek from FR 20:53, 13 April 2015 (UTC)
Unable to translate from English to Swedish
[edit]The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Why can't I translate from sv > en or from en > sv? They don't show up in the lang.-lists. Josve05a (talk) 23:03, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
- en > sv should work. English should appear in the selector when you open https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:CX . Do you see it there?
- Translating to English is not enabled yet, but it is planned. Amir E. Aharoni {{🌎🌍🌏}} 09:48, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
- Swedish doesn't show up in the list of alternatives. See screenshots: 1, 2. Josve05a (talk) 23:42, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
- Of, you're right, it's currently disabled in the selector. I added a request to enable it. Amir E. Aharoni {{🌎🌍🌏}} 12:13, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
Needs an update
[edit]I'm trying to test Content translation. My language - English - isn't supported. Under "What if my language is not supported?" on this MediaWiki page it says:
Access Content Translation on our beta servers.
That link goes to a page that says
No such special page
You have requested a special page that is not recognized by Wikipedia. A list of all recognized special pages may be found at Special:Specialpages.
Return to Main Page. Anthonyhcole (talk) 08:55, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
- Did you enable the beta feature on the beta site? Amir E. Aharoni {{🌎🌍🌏}} 09:47, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
- No I hadn't! (I thought I had.) Sorry for time-wasting, Amire80. Anthonyhcole (talk) 01:09, 7 April 2015 (UTC)
"Error while saving page".
[edit]I'm sorry I don't know if it's a right place for bug reports. After translating of half an article this message started to popup every second. I quit the page and then opened it again and I noticed now the paragraphs which were previously cleared with "Clear paragraph" couldn't be translated again, the button "+ Add translation" doesn't appear for them.
I tried to save what I've done for now and it seems the button "Publish translation" doesn't work. It turned into grey "Publising..." and nothing happened. Nekto (talk) 11:05, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
- Looks like it may have been a temporary disruption either of the Content Translation server or Parsoid server. Which Wikipedia were you translating in? We can check if something went wrong in there. Thanks. Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 13:48, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
- I use the beta server. My userpage there http://en.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/User:Nekto
- I translated from en -> ru. Nekto (talk) 17:24, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for trying Beta. There were some outage in Beta server few days back and you can test again and it should work, if not please let us know. KartikMistry (talk) 06:05, 9 April 2015 (UTC)
- Step by step I've saved my long translation by several paragraphs at a time and I've found that in my case the error was in the reference link in the target text, namely <ref>[http://www.novinite.com/articles/165030/Bulgaria+Will+Not+Sign+TTIP+Unless+US+Lifts+Visa+Requirements+-+Minister]</ref> If this ref is removed than the translation is published without any problem. I hope it may help.
- Draft=81322 Nekto (talk) 17:13, 15 April 2015 (UTC)
- It's a pity but after a while the message started to appear again. And all the same I cannot publish my translation. By the way I had to translate my article again because for unknown reason all already translated text in the right column was lost. Nekto (talk) 21:54, 9 April 2015 (UTC)
Red interlanguage links
[edit]Hi! I wanted to file a task in Phabricator but decided that it's better to discuss the issue first. I suggest disabling these links completely in the target wiki. I am a translator to ukrainian. I don't translate articles to any other languages, and I don't want to see these red links in my homewiki since they don't make sense to me. Today I visited some article on the Portuguese Wikipedia and now I'm seeing the "portuguese" red links everywhere. I don't need that.
Is there a possibility to add some "preferences" menu for this feature so that one could choose if he wants to see these links, where one wants to see them and what the target language(s) should be? If not - then just please, disable it in the target wiki at least. Most of our (ukwiki) users who had tried the CX beta-feature now have disabled it. I don't know the real reasons, but I assume that it is partially because of these red links and other bugs that I've been reporting lately. Piramidion (talk) 20:27, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
- This is already fixed but hasn't been deployed yet. It should be done by the end of this week. Sorry about the problems you were facing. We really hope this won't get in the way in future. Thanks. Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 13:49, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
- OK, I hope the problem will not occur anymore after the deployment. And being a translator I'd like to tell that it's much easier and more convenient to translate articles in the CX tool than in the wikitext editor. Sending a request for enabling it in ukwiki our primary intention was to make the article translation process easier and more user-friendly for the new editors. So far this wasn't fully reached yet, but we keep looking forward :) Thanks for your work! Piramidion (talk) 17:03, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you! That is indeed the real goal for us and we hope to make the tool better and more useful for everyone. :) Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 17:33, 7 April 2015 (UTC)
Hybrid is needed
[edit]Although this new tool has certainly facilitated the process of translating a wiki page, translating from english to portuguese (that's what I do) still has some major caveats. As the automatic translation does not work, I have to re-write the whole page. Ok, that's normal. The only problem is that it is really unconfortable to have to use the mouse to activate the highlighting functions aand it's just impossible to make a page in the wiki format. After finishing the translation, I have to edit the page again just to insert the internal links. What do you think about the possibility of choosing between this user-friendly type and a "hybrid", conserving some of these functions but adding commands such as links , italic and bold ? TiagoLubiana (talk) 15:13, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for your feedback.
- Making sure the tool can be effectively used just by keyboard is definitely important. We already provide some shortcuts and we are considering to provide more (although direct support for wikitext is not planned since users are always able to edit the resulting articles afterwards).
- We are already supporting basic formatting shortcuts such as ctrl+b to activate/deactivate bold text which should make it possible to write text in bold without leaving the keyboard. Facilitating the creation of links in a similar way is something we have plans for (you can get more details and this task in Phabricator). Pginer-WMF (talk) 15:42, 10 April 2015 (UTC)
- Muchas gracias. Pginer-WMF (talk) 17:40, 13 April 2015 (UTC)
geo-coordinates
[edit]When I tried to translate an english article into german, I realized that the coordinates weren't 'translated', but I had to adapt them manualy. This is not very important but would be a nice supplementary feature... Hadi (talk) 11:42, 8 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the feedback. It definitely makes sense to keep coordinates information when translating an article. I opened a task in Phabricator to track that proposal. Feel free to add more details. Pginer-WMF (talk) 16:13, 10 April 2015 (UTC)
I cannot public translation
[edit]Hi. I have translated this page from French into Spanish: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dong_Qichang
To start the proces, I clicked to the side language bar, into the Spanish link (who was red, as there is no Spanish page) from the French version of the page.
I also have added some extra information, so that, when I publish it, I can make corrections and arrange links and similar.
However, when I try 'publish', the green becomes grey and there is a message saying 'there was a problem to save the page'. And I cannot publish the translation and though I cannot create the new page in the new language.
Any help? I did something wrong? Dpcossio (talk) 18:41, 8 April 2015 (UTC)
- The same has happened to me while translating from english to portuguese. Is it a general bug or something? TiagoLubiana (talk) 02:18, 9 April 2015 (UTC)
- Same here, from English to Portuguese. Victor Lopes (talk) 05:31, 9 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for reporting, all! There were outage in some Wikipedia sites (including Portuguese) yesterday and it might have affected. I'm checking logs for more details and come back with more details. KartikMistry (talk) 06:09, 9 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hi again. Not only It was impossible for me to publish my translation. The worst is that I have lost all of it!! I worked for two complete days in that translation and it is gone!! :( Dpcossio (talk) 18:14, 9 April 2015 (UTC)
- Same here. I was able to publish one small paragraph last night, but when I tried to translate more paragraphs, the error occurred again. Victor Lopes (talk) 19:35, 9 April 2015 (UTC)
- Everytime I try to keep translating a page that's already been created, the tool tells me my translation will replace the page's content with it, so I chose publishing it as a draft. Then it automatically creates User:Victor Lopes/PAGETITLE. When I try to add another translated paragraph, then the errors occur again. It seems I would only be able to translate a page without needing to refresh the tool if I do it all at once. Victor Lopes (talk) 06:11, 11 April 2015 (UTC)
- Now I'm totally unable to save my translation, there's always an unspecified error. And since nobody is giving us any update on the issue, I guess I'll have to get back to ordinary translation. This tool was highly useful when it worked, hope one day it is resurrected. Victor Lopes (talk) 05:50, 12 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hi, I am sorry we could not respond earlier. We have been trying to figure out the source of the problem and it seems that the error is happening quite randomly making it hard to understand where the publishing error is happening. There are several places this could happen - cxserver, parsoid, or even tools on individual Wikipedias like abuse filter etc. We have a few patches ready for deployment tonight. We are hoping this should fix the problem. If not we will keep trying. We are very sorry for this interruption. Thanks a lot of reporting the errors. They certainly helped us explore the possibilities. Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 07:46, 14 April 2015 (UTC)
- Nice, thank you for the update. Looking forward for the end of these errors. Victor Lopes (talk) 22:50, 14 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hello, we have deployed some changes which we are hoping should stop publishing failures. Please do let us know if you still face problems. Thanks. Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 09:33, 17 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hi. Thank you for your answer and help :)
- I have published another article, about a painter and with a gallery. However:
- a) The different titles in the gallery were not published in translations and I needed to repeat it again.
- b) The translation page kept as it didn't have done translation.
- c) References and above bibliographie don't translate well between languages Dpcossio (talk) 20:13, 19 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you for trying again.
- a) we are facing some problems with gallery tags. Can you please tell me which page you were translating?
- b) do you mean the rest of the page also could not be translated?
- c) references are also something we are investigating. We can check the page in details to identify any known failure points. Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 09:31, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hi.
- The page was the following:
- That is now translated into
- https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dong_Qichang
- When I was translating, the app was keeping telling me that there was a problem to save the translation, but at the same time, I could see that it was constantly telling me as well that it was saved some seconds before. When I finished, I published translation. The question is that it was published translated, except referenced and photo gallery. I needed to retranslate again, of course now directly on the new page.
- Also, the interlik was not created. I needed to link manually the new translation in Spanish to the French original. I could only do this some minutes ago as yesterday the interlink application didn´t let me do it. It was telling me that I didn´t have permission to add that link.
- Concerning the application for translation again, it behaved as the translation had not been published (even it it did it) and some of the parts disappeared. As the translation had already been published, I eliminated the 'on-going' translation. Dpcossio (talk) 13:59, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
- A very scetchy bug report of something similar; Save fails sometimes from nnwiki to nowiki. Jeblad (talk) 18:16, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
- @Runab WMF: Perhaps this problem is related somehow to the type of internet connection people are using. I am a layman in this area, but I've solved it by just deactivating my VPN service (i used Hola). The trouble is still happening at the university computers I use from time to time, but I guess it has to do with the internet configurations too. TiagoLubiana (talk) 20:14, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
- This is good information. Thanks a lot for letting us know. Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 07:38, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
- I"ve published three translations so far since my last report, all worked fine. I published them all without pausing the work (I opened the translation page, translated everything and published it). Now I'm gonna try and translate one page in two or more stages, to see if the saving issues are still happening. Victor Lopes (talk) 20:36, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot. Do please let us know if you find anything worth exploring. I am hoping there won't be any more failures. :) Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 08:11, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
- Actually, I was wondering if we'll ever be able to translate infoboxes and track listings, as well. Victor Lopes (talk) 16:53, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
- Now the same bug as before is happening again and the page is warning me about that same unspecified error. I didn't do anything different, except that this time I didn't translate the entire page, just the sourced parts. Hours of work lost again. The article is w:Agallah. Victor Lopes (talk) 01:08, 17 May 2015 (UTC)
- ...and my fifth attempt went just fine. Can't figure out what triggers the error message. This time, once again I didn't translate everything, but I translated at least something in every separated translation box. Victor Lopes (talk) 01:30, 17 May 2015 (UTC)
- Another topic about the same problem, in Portuguese:Talk:Content translation/2015/05#h-"Ocorreu_um_erro_ao_salvar_a_página"-2015-05-18T18:37:00.000Z. MisterSanderson (talk) 16:07, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
- I wonder why the traceback isn't dumped when an error occurs... Usien6 (talk) 00:36, 24 May 2015 (UTC)
- @Usien6: We're logging errors! :) KartikMistry (talk) 03:50, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
- Today I forgot to translate the External links section of an article, but no errors occurred. Victor Lopes (talk) 00:07, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
- Just lost my complete translation on Latvian Wikipedia. "Publish" button was greyed out and I accidentaly clicked on image which lead me away from page.
- Can not reccomend for day to day usage. Papuass (talk) 09:23, 28 May 2015 (UTC)
- There is a topic about image linking to other pages: Talk:Content translation/2015/05#h-Erro_no_link_das_fotos-2015-05-23T19:28:00.000Z. MisterSanderson (talk) 01:10, 7 June 2015 (UTC)
- Ohh! We had added in checks to make sure that people were displayed a warning if they were leaving the page while unsaved edits existed (similar to when an user tries to leave a wiki page while editing). This could be a possible bug and we will make sure to fix this asap. I am very sorry you lost the translation. This is really not expected from the normal workflow. Thanks for letting us know. Quick question, can you please tell me the page you were trying to translate? Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 11:25, 28 May 2015 (UTC)
- It was en:Roller chain to lv:Rullīšu ķēde. Papuass (talk) 08:43, 3 June 2015 (UTC)

- Hello, Thanks for letting us know. As Kartik mentioned in another comment, its quite possible that you got caught during the outage yesterday that affected several Wikipedias. He is checking the logs. But in case you see the problem, do please let us know. Sorry that this caused a disruption. Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 07:31, 9 April 2015 (UTC)
Can't publish translated article
[edit]After a first and successful translation, I've began to work in my second article using this awesome tool. But this time something happens that is not allowing me to publish the partially translated article. Every time I try to publish it, appears the same message, in an orange background: "Error while saving the page" (it's a free translation of the catalan original message). I can still work on it without any problem, so I guess it should probably have nothing to do with the outage I've seen you talk about in other comments.
Thanks in advance. Papapep (talk) 15:35, 9 April 2015 (UTC)
- Sorry for the trouble, We are investigating this issue. A few other people also reported this. Your translation will not be lost, you can retrieve and continue from your dashboard anytime. Can you help us with providing the languagee pair and article title you were translating? Santhosh.thottingal (talk) 15:57, 9 April 2015 (UTC)
- The translation is from english to catalan, from the original article named "Modular programming" to the catalan one "Programació modular".
- Thanks for your help and time. Papapep (talk) 18:52, 9 April 2015 (UTC)
- I have tried to reproduce the error in the beta cluster, and it behaves exactly in the same way. Don't know if it helps you, but just to let you know ;)

Espace de discussion en français
[edit]Serait-il possible d'avoir un espace de discussion en français. C'est assez fatiguant à la longue de toujours devoir passer par l'anglais... Berdea (talk) 15:34, 10 April 2015 (UTC)
- Il y a des volontaires pour traduire ! ;-)
- Berdea wants to know if a talk page in French is avialiable. He feels tiring to always use English. Trizek from FR 15:58, 10 April 2015 (UTC)

- Je ne peux pas voir tes traductions, Berdea. Mais j'ai signalé il y a deux jours que j'avais également perdu mes traductions. Trizek from FR 18:37, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

- I can unfortunately confirm that draft #34987 is empty. We added a check that prevents this from happening in the future. I suspect it was caused by some kind of JavaScript error. Nikerabbit (talk) 14:42, 14 April 2015 (UTC)
Cannot translate from French to english ?
[edit]in the list of possible translation language from a french article I don't find English, is it normal ? Romain.bottan (talk) 17:56, 10 April 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, for now. There is a plan to enable translation into English soon. Amir E. Aharoni {{🌎🌍🌏}} 10:55, 11 April 2015 (UTC)

Interlanguage link if no internal link. As an option.
[edit]I would like to have an option, that when enabled, all internal links from a source wiki article that have no their counterparts in the target wikipedia were nevertheless linked with help of a template like this one https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Interlanguage_link OR if it is too difficult just linked with the same source language wikipedia links.
I mean for now CT just delete all such internal links and I would like to leave them as Interlanguage links . And then I'll add the templates manually after publishing.
So if in the source (i.e. English) wiki article we have, say, "[[Link]]", then in the target (i.e. Russian) wiki article in case of absence of such an article it would be "[[en:Link|Ссылка]]" Nekto (talk) 20:16, 10 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the feedback. There is a list of changes for links already considered that includes providing an option to keep red links in the translation, but keeping it as a cross-language link sounds also another interesting option to provide the user with. So I created a ticket to track it. I'm not sure to which extent that could be the default option (in terms of availability of the template and user expectations to find content in other languages) but I can see it as something useful. How to translate an internal link
[edit]Hi, I fail to understand how the wiki links thing work. I can see that the content of the links get translated (or more exactly, the equivalent of the wiki link is given in the target language) but I don't understand how I can manage to translate the text linked without erasing the link.
Example : the tool gives me [[Armée de défense d'Israël|Israel Defense Forces]]. How could I get easily just [[Armée de défense d'Israël]] ?
Thanks Kimdime (talk) 14:51, 11 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hello
- For the moment, you have to translate the blue text. Then, when you have finished and published the translation, you can shorten the link. Trizek from FR 08:35, 13 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hi,
- This only works if both language versions start with, at least, the same letter, otherwise, as in the example I gave, the wikilink get lost because you need to erase the other language version. I hope this will be fixed soon. Kimdime (talk) 16:35, 13 April 2015 (UTC)
- My trick to solve it:
- You have this link: model railroading
- You write between the letters : modélisme ferroviaireel railroading
- You suppress the remaining letters : modélisme ferroviaire
- And I hope too this will be fixed soon! Trizek from FR 16:49, 13 April 2015 (UTC)
- Sure, I thought about this trick, but it's a pain, specially if you keep in mind that the link translation is already there, but hidden in the code. I guess that this will be fixed at some point, but I will refrain from using this promising tool until this improvement is provided. Kimdime (talk) 20:48, 13 April 2015 (UTC)

Marcomogollon (talk) 13:58, 13 April 2015 (UTC)

interlanguage links shown in left side
Cordiali saluti. Patafisik Una tantum (talk) 09:46, 14 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for trying Content translation. (I had to machine translate your response since I dont know your language. Sorry.)
- The red interlanguage links is a feature of content translation. It indicate that the article you are reading is not present in a language you might be interested. Clicking on that, you can start translating using Content translation. The Bahasa Indonesia language is probably a language you chose previously while trying out. Just consider it as a suggestion and you can totally ignore it. Santhosh.thottingal (talk) 12:53, 14 April 2015 (UTC)
- Is there any way to turn a language off in these red links? I'm getting red links for bg: (I presume Bulgarian) even through I only speak Canadian and they're not even the same character set. I have no idea how this got enabled?

Russian to Ukrainian
[edit]Does not work. See [1] for example. All the text remain in Russian. A1 (talk) 07:38, 16 April 2015 (UTC)
- AFAIK, no MT for Ukrainian has been provided yet. Content translation/Languages#Available languages Nekto (talk) 20:21, 16 April 2015 (UTC)
- Nekto is right: Machine translation is not supported for this language pair yet. It may be supported in the future. Machine translation is available only for a small number of language pairs at this point. Amir E. Aharoni {{🌎🌍🌏}} 21:25, 16 April 2015 (UTC)
- So what's the sence in deploying Content translation to Ukrainian Wikipedia, if no MT into Ukrainian is supported at all? Also,it does not allow to translate references. And also, it does not support inserting templates like Visual editor does, while Link-interwiki-like templates are really necessary in translation process. It's almost useless, and definitely disappointing. Olexa Riznyk (talk) 20:28, 23 April 2015 (UTC)
- MT is definitely of great help while translating, but even without MT Content Translation has proven useful for many users.
- For example, more than 200 translations were published in French Wikipedia (where there is also no MT right now) in the first month since it has been available. Content Translation provides context by showing source and target paragraphs next to each other and adapting automatically elements such as links which many users considered to save they some valuable time.
- The purpose of the tool is also to focus on starting quickly an initial version of the article (which you can later edit with the editor of your choice for advanced changes) not to create advanced content. The tool is available as a beta feature and we are aware of many limitations. However we think it is positive to expose it to the community (in an opt-in basis) to collect feedback and improve according to your needs. Pginer-WMF (talk) 08:14, 29 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hello @A1 @Nekto @Olexa Riznyk - Yandex machine translation system is now supported on Content Translation and as we understand it is particularly well developed for translating into Ukranian. We will be happy to enable it for Ukranian as well if you would like to consider this option. Thanks. Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 05:43, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
- You can try out the GoogleTrans gadget content translation feature. You enable the gadget in your destination wiki (see [2] and [3] for help on this). The Yandex translation engine is supported now if you select it in the language change box of the gadget. Once the gadget is set in the common.js file of your destination wiki, you can select a paragraph in the middle column of the content translation system (the paragraph to be translated), hold the CTRL and ALT keys down at the same time. Then the paragraph will be translated to the destination wiki language and the HTML markup will be kept. This aids in translation. I have done 75 simple French articles to English this way.
- You can translate, using the Yandex translation engine, from Russian to Ukranian, vice versa. In fact any of the language pairs supported by Yandex or Google are possible. Endo999 (talk) 03:34, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
- The GoogleTrans gadget is enabled already on the ukwiki (Ukranian Wikipedia). You can enable it for your account by going to Preferences/Gadgets and selecting GoogleTrans and then hitting the SAVE button at the bottom of the page. Then you should have the gadget running and from then on can use the Gadget in the Ukranian Content Translation system. Endo999 (talk) 23:00, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
- MT steel does not work. The year passed but steel I see the word "unavailable" :(
- I`m not sure yandex translate is better than google. Usually I use google and it is quite good. A1 (talk) 21:14, 22 April 2016 (UTC)
- The GoogleTrans gadget is not part of the Content Translation system, but is a gadget that integrates with it, as described above. You need to put a software include (see links in comments above) in your personal ruwiki common.js file (if translating from any language to russian) or in your enwiki common.js file (if translating from any language to english). At that point the gadget will start working for you and will have the CTRL-ALT translation behavior that I describe in my help links above. Endo999 (talk) 21:46, 23 April 2016 (UTC)
- @A1, we are working on getting this sorted in a few days and will be able to enable MT for Ukranian in Yandex. You can select and use it from the dropdown. Please do keep an eye out for the announcement. Thanks. Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 13:19, 6 May 2016 (UTC)
- At least it works! Thank you! Though I don`t understand why did you prefer yandex. Google translate is better than Yandex, this could prove most of Ukrainian users who deal with translations. A1 (talk) 16:42, 15 May 2016 (UTC)
- Hi @A1, like I mentioned in another thread we are looking at the details for Google Translate as it is the most requested service. The entire process takes a bit of time as we need to ensure that terms of service and other legal aspects are clarified so that there are no technical or legal conflicts from either the MT provider or Wikimedia. The process with Yandex completed earlier and hence we are able to enable it at the moment. Thanks. Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 12:35, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
- The GoogleTrans gadget can use either Google translate or Yandex translate engines. You select them in the language selection popup (go to the MORE on the top right menu, click on this and then click on 'GoogleTrans(on)'. You will then be able to select the translation engine. Google translation is the default.
- This gadget is not part of the Wikipedia Content Translation system, but is a third party gadget that integrates with the Content Translation system. I have used it to translate over 200 French Wikipedia biops to the English Wikipedia. For simple to medium level difficulty articles the Google translation is definitely helpful in translating the article (for good language pairs like French-English), although it still requires a knowledgable human in the destination language to clean up the translation and fix up any any problems in the translation. Endo999 (talk) 19:49, 15 May 2016 (UTC)
- There is no such option in a the top right menu. There are only 3 optinos - "paste initial text", "Use Yandex" and "do not use machine translation". The first one and the last are the same in fact. Also it`s amazing, the poll I`ve organised in wikipedian community http://vk.com/uk.wikipedia shows, that about 70% prefer Goolge, 7% - Yandex, 7% - appriciate both of them and 15 % - neither. Therefore Goolge seems to be more popular then Yandex as 10:1. A1 (talk) 11:26, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
- HI A1 you are right on that point, for the Content Translation page. If you navigate in the destination wiki to the home webpage then you will be able to do the procedure I said above. There should be an inverted triangle and a "MORE" (in the enwiki at least) in the menu of the top right of the page.
- In any way, it doesn't matter for your case, since Google is the default and you prefer Google. Endo999 (talk) 19:19, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
Issues and comments
[edit]Hi, I just try the tool on the french Wikipedia, I have several questions and I can raise issues:
Save an ongoing translation & use back the tool ?
[edit]If I'm not satisfied of the process of having an ongoing translation but having to stop at some point. I don't know if the paragraph I translated are saved somewhere, like on the translation tool on multilingual wiki. Actually I had to stop my browser, and when I restarted it everything was lost and the process was restarted from the beginning.
The question is: in this case, if I save at some point, will the translation tool be still available when I'll restart ?
Link translation
[edit]I don't know, with automatic translation, how to be sure a link for which we know there is an article in the target language has or not been validated. As I see this right now, I just can select the link, the french article link shows on the right column, but when I hover my mouse othe the link in the translated paragraph box, what shows up is still the name of the english article, which puzzles me.
references
[edit]When a line stops with a reference, a [1] upperlined shows at the end. The problem is that if I want to add a point in the translation box after the [1], it's upperlined to ... no way to know how make it back to normal script.
(PS: for the flow folks, the "Alt+shift+P" usual preview shortcut does not work.
That's all for now. TomT0m (talk) 09:00, 17 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hello, thanks for bringing this up. I will reply per topic:
- > Save an ongoing translation & use back the tool ?
- I suspect this may have happened due the the issues we were facing since last week with saving and publishing. Generally, when you are translating the content automatically gets saved every few seconds. If at any time you have to stop you will see that the unfinished translation is shown in your dashboard as 'in-progress'. When you are ready to restart, you can click on the article name from the dashboard and your saved work should be displayed again inside the editor. Could you please let me know which article you were trying to translate? We would like to check in case any special template (or anything else) may be preventing the translation to be saved.
- > Link translation
- This should be automatically adopted i.e. when you click and add contents to each paragraph the link from the appropriate French Wikipedia page, if it exists will be picked up. Could you please let us know on which article you saw this problem?
- > references
- This is definitely a bug. If its not already in our phabricator system, I will add it. Thanks for letting us know. Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 09:31, 17 April 2015 (UTC)
- it is Metaclass_(Semantic_Web) on enwiki. Thanks for the quick answer :) TomT0m (talk) 10:24, 17 April 2015 (UTC)
- Did you try publishing this page again? I could publish this page on the beta instance and another page on the French Wikipedia without any problems. So am wondering if last night's updates have fixed the problem that you were facing. Thanks. Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 14:55, 17 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hi, I did not publish the page at all /o\ I did not understood I had too.
- I translated a few sections, closed the navigator again, and after reopening it seems some of my translations are still there, some are not.
- I also noticed that the message that says that the paged has been saved the moment before stays as is, which is a problem because I don't really know when it was saved ... TomT0m (talk) 16:26, 17 April 2015 (UTC)
- OK, I did now, and this fails. But even if the publication fails, the text seems to be saved when I click on the "publish" button. TomT0m (talk) 17:15, 17 April 2015 (UTC)
- Okay. So now we need to check if there is something hidden in that page thats causing the problem. Thanks for letting us know. Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 09:28, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
- And now, I'm finishing the translation, I got a weird white space addition that seems to grow over time:
TomT0m (talk) 14:56, 23 April 2015 (UTC) - https://fr.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=M%C3%A9taclasse_%28web_s%C3%A9mantique%29&diff=114408410&oldid=114408308
- OK, the article is published now, here is the diff of the correction I did (some of them are my own mistakes, but mostly it's due to the translate tool. TomT0m (talk) 15:55, 23 April 2015 (UTC)
- This is definitely very helpful. Sorry for all the trouble and confusion. We will dig deeper into the problems and try to sort them out as soon as possible. Thanks a lot for your patience and support. Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 08:14, 29 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you. I will try testing with this page. Meanwhile the other problem about the text size is now here: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T96370 Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 14:19, 17 April 2015 (UTC)
- ===Save button===
- Despite the autosave, being able to force a save can have a beneficial psychological effect. I made the mistake when doing my first translation using the CT-tool of thinking that I had to publish to save. That may just be me being extra-ordinarily stupid, but I generally think of my mistakes as unlikely to be unique. Dizzi90 (talk) 19:17, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
- I tried the tool a few days after it was made available in french and rapidly gave up because of a problem with the autosave function (worked just once). Beyond the autosave problem, I found that the formatting options were too restricted. I think Content Translation should at least include the same functions to format the text as the Visual Editor. The management of internal links was chaotic and most of the time I did not get the text for the link right. Finally, I would find it useful to save the content in my draft section straight away and not to be forced to create the article first. This would enable me to add an infobox and tables to the article before publishing it. Casper Tinan (talk) 21:04, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hello, there is actually a work around for this and we use it all the time while testing. When you start translating an article you can use a working title under your userspace for the target page. For instance, if you are translating the article about the city of Boston from English to French, in the Translation page title you can use Utilisateur:<username>/Boston. Later you can copy it over as a new article. Hope this helps. Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 07:45, 29 April 2015 (UTC)
French language
[edit]Hello, I've just tried to translate a few pages from English and various languages into French but it says that automatic translation is not available for French. Funny enough it works for related languages (e.g. Spanish) and less used related languages (e.g. Catalan).
Can anyone fix this/upload the French term dictionary? Many thanks Pcauchy (talk) 18:52, 17 April 2015 (UTC)
- As far as I understand it, the translation engine uses Apertium as the engine behind the scene. And only released language pairs are usable. Currently the pairs are:
- Breton -> French
- French -> Esperanto
- French <-> Catalan
- French <-> Spanish
- Sadly, the English <-> French pair is in early alpha stage... Halibutt (talk) 01:58, 18 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks @Halibutt for replying! We're working on French<->Spanish to be available in Content Translation very soon. KartikMistry (talk) 03:42, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
- Apertium translates well from French to Esperanto, but we have to correct after. Ĉiuĵaŭde (talk) 13:00, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
- @Ĉiuĵaŭde: I doubt any machine-assisted translation will ever be good enough for Wikipedia without editing the text manually in the end. It might be possible between closely-related languages (say, Spanish to Catalan or Serbian to Croatian), but between distant languages it will always need an editor. After all the computer will never know which of the synonyms to use. Consider the English noun ''house''. In a Polish-English dictionary it will have at least ten different Polish equivalents, and the computer will most likely never know for sure which of them to use. Understanding the context, the consituation is critical.
- Having said that, some online dictionaries based on a large corpus of texts show some promise in countering this problem (Linguee.pl for instance), but still. Halibutt (talk) 22:17, 1 May 2015 (UTC)
Interlanguage links
[edit]Hi,
I have translated the article [[Dong Qichang]] from French into Spanish with the Content translation tool. I have observed that, even if I translated directly from the French page with the tool, the Spanish interlanguage link isn't linked. I have tried to add the interlanguage link myself but it says that I don't have the permit to do such thing.
If it is not done authomatically and I cannot do it, who can? Dpcossio (talk) 20:08, 19 April 2015 (UTC)
- That you don't have a permit is a bit weird. I am able to add a link by going to the Spanish article "Dong Qichang", clicking "Añadir enlace" in the empty interlanguage links list, selecting frwiki, writing "Dong Qichang" and confirming. Can you please try this again?
- In any case, these links will be added automatically soon when the article is published. Amir E. Aharoni {{🌎🌍🌏}} 08:42, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hi. I tried to put the link this morning and I could not do it. I have tried again, just a minute ago, and I finally could. I wonder if this can be due to my browser? I am using always Firefox. I wonder as well if this is due to my need of VPN connexion, as I am in China? Dpcossio (talk) 13:46, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
- Maybe. This sounds more like a Wikidata issue that a ContentTranslation issue. Amir E. Aharoni {{🌎🌍🌏}} 20:50, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
- Yeah this sounds like for some reason your edit wasn't allowed on Wikidata. I have a suspicion and will look into it some more. Thanks for letting us know. Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 12:48, 22 April 2015 (UTC)
Content translation in ast.wikipedia
[edit]I've just tested this new beta tool in Asturian Wikipedia. It is great, we been using a similar method by our means using Apertium engine in 3000 articles from Spanish Wikipedia the last years, and this tool really make this work much more easier. Apertium offers translation spanish -> asturian. I've just submitted an evaluation for this tool, and is almost perfect (2-3 words to change per paragraph). It would be very useful to have automatic translation from Apertium with this pair of languages. Machine translation into galician
[edit]Hi, the tool is now in Galician wikipedia too, I have tested it there but there is a problem, there is not machine translation to galician. Could somebody add machine translation services to galician from the other languages? Thanks. Elisardojm (talk) 23:51, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
- Machine translation support is in progress, tracked at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T96654. We will deploy it once the required packaging is done. Thanks! Santhosh.thottingal (talk) 04:51, 22 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the answer Santhosh.thottingal :) And, somebody knows when will be it supported? Is there any way to accelerate the task? I say that because great power of Content Translation is that aid, and some users in Galician wikipedia have asked to me about that issue. Elisardojm (talk) 07:24, 22 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hello, as per current status it may take around a week more to complete the packaging and testing. We faced some testing failures on the packages which took a while to locate. Not just for Galician, but for multiple languages. We will make sure to update the ticket it we anticipate more delays. Thanks. Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 06:42, 28 April 2015 (UTC)

Unexpected language link
[edit]I have translated page en:Cyberpsychology to bg:Киберпсихология using the tool, same as my recent Firefox download (seems unrelated but it is) I get in the field Afrikaans as a language despite it is not viewable in Wikidata (https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2905785) or in my translation code. So it must be in the app code somewhere hardcoded. I don't really know why and how African languages appear literary everywhere recently.
Also the proper language links don't get automatically done but only Afrikaans, I had to add bg link manually in Wikidata. Alexd (talk) 13:57, 23 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for your feedback. what you describe seems to be a combination of several issues the team is working to solve:
- Interlanguage links should be added automatically.
- For pages with no links, showing a red link to ask for translation could be confusing.
- Languages such as Afrikaans are suggested because they are the initial option by default when creating a new translation. Those should not be used if the user didn't use them for translation.
- The current representation for suggested languages to translate can be improved to make it less distracting and provide users some control to prevent wrong suggestions.
- Feel free to check the above tickets to provide additional input and track their progress. Pginer-WMF (talk) 07:56, 28 April 2015 (UTC)
Non wiki and additional templates
[edit]Is it possible to turn off the non wiki part where I am trying to use some kind of template that is not existing in the original text? For example this link (https://bg.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%D0%94%D0%B0%D1%82%D1%81%D0%BA%D0%B8_%D1%86%D0%B5%D0%BD%D1%82%D1%8A%D1%80_%D0%B7%D0%B0_%D0%B4%D0%B8%D0%B7%D0%B0%D0%B9%D0%BD&diff=6655748&oldid=6655747 ). Another thing is possible to when you are using the tool automatically in the top of the references to place the template (https://bg.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A8%D0%B0%D0%B1%D0%BB%D0%BE%D0%BD:%D0%9F%D1%80%D0%B5%D0%B2%D0%BE%D0%B4_%D0%BE%D1%82 ) and automatically to fill parameters :) Thanks! VladislavNedelev (talk) 20:21, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hi @VladislavNedelev: , sorry that I missed this question.
- About the first one, I think that you added this template manually. The ContentTranslation editor doesn't support wiki syntax like "{{". You can add templates the usual way after publishing the first version.
- If I understand correctly, your second request is covered by this bug report: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T98126 . Amir E. Aharoni {{🌎🌍🌏}} 12:13, 6 May 2015 (UTC)
Pages considered as not published
[edit]Hello, two of the articles I've created in this tool still remain as unpublished in my list and I don't know how I can delete them from there. It's a great tool. Thanks. Bagratun (talk) 03:28, 26 April 2015 (UTC)
- I am assuming here that you may have already used the 'Delete' option from the dashboard. Did you see any errors when you tried to delete these 2 unpublished translations from the list? Thanks. Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 08:11, 29 April 2015 (UTC)
- I didn't pay attention to those three points under the name of the article, it's easier now I know it actually exists and is not a kind of bug. Thanks a lot. Bagratun (talk) 19:02, 30 April 2015 (UTC)
using spaces different to "main"
[edit]When I tried to translate a "user page" with "content translation" from a non-english WP, the prefix space (for instance, "user:" is changed to the equivalent in my language for instance: "usuari:" before access to a source page. Then, as the page "usuari:xxxx" doesn't exist in english the content translator give a message "Page Not found". Amadalvarez (talk) 07:05, 26 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hello, Did you try editing the title of the target page in the new translation selector? i.e. if you were trying to translate your user page from Spanish WP (Usuario:xxxx) to English WP, you can use "User:<xxxx>" as the target title. Thanks. Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 08:24, 29 April 2015 (UTC)
Traduction de la page Trebeta (en) : Trebote (fr)
[edit]Le traducteur m'indique "Traduction automatique" "Non disponible pour français" j'ai donc créer la page (fr) mais en anglais. Après avoir publier la page j'ai voulu ajouter les modèles "Traduction" et "Traduit de", mais voilà : "28 avril 2015 à 22:08 Mathis73 (discuter | contributions) . . (vide) (-1 549) . . (LiveRC : Blanchiment ; Not in french)" Fagmt (talk) 20:34, 28 April 2015 (UTC)
- (S'il vous plaît pardonner mes erreurs ; je ne parle pas très bien le français.)
- Merci pour vos commentaires.
- La traduction automatique est pas pris en charge pour le français. Vous êtes censé taper la traduction vous dans la colonne vide, et seulement après avoir tapé le translaiton vous êtes censé publier. Amir E. Aharoni {{🌎🌍🌏}} 11:42, 6 May 2015 (UTC)

Red interwiki links on each page
[edit]I have tried opening several translations deleted all of those tries as I have found there is no machine translation to or from Czech language supported yet. Looking at Apertium it will take some time as Czech language is one big mine field for machine translation.
My problem is now I am getting red interwiki links suggesting translations and nowhere to disable them, even for languages I have started translations for and deleted them directly after it. The only way I have found to get rid of these links was to disable and reenable the whole Content Translation tool. So is there going to be some setting for this? Lower at #Red interwiki links, 20+ days ago, it seems to me some such settings page was promised. Utar (talk) 08:10, 29 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hello, we currently have a few issues on phabricator that are being fixed. Its scheduled for completion by next week: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T94869. Thanks for letting us know. It helps us move around the priority of things that need attention. We are really sorry about this problem. Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 13:59, 29 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hello @Utar we now have a new machine translation system - Yandex that can be used for translating into Czech from many different languages. You can see it here: https://translate.yandex.com/ . We are hoping this will be helpful for users of the Czech Wikipedia. What do you think? Thanks. Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 18:07, 5 February 2016 (UTC)
- Hi, thanks for info.
- Is Yandex going via English (or, ehm, via Russian) when translating between non-English (Russian) languages? Czech language has quite flexible word order so word-to-word translations via English can get really crappy results. I don't know Russian enough to be able to say how it works as midstep but being of Slavic group may probably help. Google translations from Czech to Slovak language and vice versa are on the other hand quite often used at cswiki because IIRC there are the only exception of translating Czech language where Google Translator goes directly and not via English.
- Thanks for allowing another option in the tool. I will see if others in Czech Wikipedia have noticed this change and if they are using it/going to use it. Utar (talk) 23:02, 3 March 2016 (UTC)
- The GoogleTrans gadget will already do machine translation from from many other languages to Czech and vice versa. It can use either the Google or Yandex translation engines. You can pick which one you wish to use. See the comments below for help links and more explanation over the gadget. I have used the gadget to translate 120 french articles into the english wikipedia. For french-english translations it is quite good, although you usually get a decent translation in very bad english, which you have to fix up. I don't know how the Czech translation is. For installing the gadget in your private common.js file in the Czech wikipedia see the instructions in the comment below. Endo999 (talk) 06:08, 4 March 2016 (UTC)
- Hi @Utar, this has not been enabled on the Czech Wikipedia yet. It needs a configuration change to make that happen. About the translation quality, perhaps you can check that on https://translate.yandex.com/ . There are multiple languages from which you can translate into Czech, and some of them use an intermediary. Thanks. Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 05:09, 4 March 2016 (UTC)
- I tried to translate an article from English to Ukranian. You had said there was machine translation for this language pair now. I didn't notice any, in fact the Content Translation system said there was no machine translation for the language pair. Endo999 (talk) 22:28, 5 February 2016 (UTC)
- Hi @Endo999, English to Ukranian is available through Yandex but not enabled on Content Translation. Its a configuration switch that needs to be done before users can see it on Content Translation. Thanks. Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 04:05, 8 February 2016 (UTC)
- You can try out the GoogleTrans gadget content translation feature. You enable the gadget in your destination wiki (see [4] and [5] for help on this).
Endo999 (talk) 22:30, 5 February 2016 (UTC)
Хороший инструмент

Traducteur english français
[edit]- la version bêta du traducteur prend elle en charge la traduction de english vers français ? Fagmt (talk) 10:12, 29 April 2015 (UTC)
- (sorry I had to translate your message using google and also replying in English). Currently English to French machine translation is not available. We use Apertium for Content Translation and they only support Spanish to French translations at this point of time. Thanks Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk) 10:10, 11 May 2015 (UTC)

Everywhere an africaan redlink
[edit]In every article interwikies there is on top a redlink to africaan asking to translate the article to africaan. How can it be removed, I don't spead africaans and nowhere mention in babel boxes that I do. Maybe it should take data from babel boxes, like in wikidata. (activated it in el.wikipedia). When I try to publish a translation
[edit]When I try to publish a translation from polish to ukrainian I see on screen: "Помилка при збереженні сторінки." "Mistake during saving the page". Oleksandr Tahayev (talk) 16:39, 30 April 2015 (UTC)

- I have experienced the same problem when I translated the article "Wolność i Niezawisłość" from Polish to Czech, also to be named "Wolność i Niezawisłość". JanCharvat.01 (talk) 16:15, 9 May 2015 (UTC)
- The same goes for translating Muzeum Powstania Warszawskiego into Muzeum varšavského povstání from Polish to Czech. So I believe that there is a problem with the Polish version? JanCharvat.01 (talk) 16:29, 9 May 2015 (UTC)

We will check if there was a disruption in the services or if there are some problems hiding in there that we failed to correct last week. Thanks.
