Note that requests for comment and other miscellaneous requests should not go here, but instead to the Project:Village Pump.

Any new grant of the administrator flag should have an associated subpage here, except for well-established developers, where a developer is someone who has had changes accepted to the MediaWiki core or a MediaWiki extension where the total number of changed lines in the relevant whitespace-insensitive diffs exceeds 100.

The autopatroller group can be assigned by administrators, too, but generally that is given when an admin notices that patrolling someone's edits does not add any value, and not based on requests by the user themselves.

One thing to keep in mind is that unlike most Wikimedia sites, this site is controlled by the MediaWiki developers, not the other users in this community. Being a developer (someone with merge access who uses it to maintain code that runs on Wikimedia sites) automatically entitles you to at least administrator status, and a long-time developer won't find it hard to become a bureaucrat. If you are not a developer, you do have to give some good reason to get any privileges; you should not expect to ever be made a bureaucrat. Something like a third of administrators and a quarter of bureaucrats are non-developers, however, so it's not like you shouldn't bother asking.

That said, there aren't really any formal policies on what's required: you just have to convince a bureaucrat. Use common sense – if you are trustworthy and your services are in need, there's no reason not to promote you to administrator at least, but don't ask for administrator without giving a concrete reason (unless you are a developer). Being personally known to a developer or having administrator or higher status on a major Wikimedia project are two ways to be deemed trustworthy. This is a wiki that has opted in to allowing global sysops to work here, and such users are free to use their rights on this wiki and do not need to separately request administrator. The same applies to global rollbackers, who are already autopatrolled on this wiki. Other users in specialised global groups (such as global interface editors) are also free to use their rights on this wiki by default.

User: Serhio Magpie

Requested user-rights: IP block exempt.

I have configured automated deployment from GitHub for my gadget, but the majority of GitHub IPs are blocked as open proxies/webhosts. Automated deployment uses a bot password with a limited scope and my account has 2FA enabled. Examples of automated edits: [1], [2]. I'd like to be exempted from IP blocks and will only use it in a limited scenario as mentioned above. All other manual edits will always be performed without VPN/proxy. Thanks. @Serhior Magpie: I would require a bot account with the bot flag for this.--Jasper Deng (talk) 22:35, 19 June 2026 (UTC)reply
@Jasper Deng: but in this case the bot will also require the Interface Administrator flag (so an operator too) to have the ability to edit CSS and JS in the user namespace. I thought about making Instant Diffs a Global gadget, but think it doesn't have so much benefit in its current state. Serhio Magpie (talk) 23:21, 19 June 2026 (UTC)reply
Can't we then have the code hosted in the bot's userspace? I'd also be willing to grant it interface admin, though that would need a discussion too.--Jasper Deng (talk) 00:24, 20 June 2026 (UTC)reply
It's a possible option with the bot's userspace, but as the gadget is already used by plenty of users, including on external wikis, it will require a redirect from the old location (indirect loading with an extra mw.loader.load) that could potentially cause extra loading time and problems with cache invalidation. So, should I consider updating this permission request, or opening a new one for Interface Administrator, and than a second one for bot status with the required flags? Serhio Magpie (talk) 01:44, 20 June 2026 (UTC)reply
I would say make a new permissions request. The other concern is that IP block exemption would not exempt your account from applicable rate limits, and could lead to too much clutter in recent changes, especially if your setup is true continuous deployment. Jasper Deng (talk) 09:47, 20 June 2026 (UTC)reply
The main gadget code is like two files, that get deployed occasionally when some fixes or new features are added. Translation files (now there's 40 of them) get deployed like twice a week if there are any changes at all. So there won't be a lot of clutter in recent changes. I have created a new permissions request, so I think this one can be closed. Thanks. Serhio Magpie (talk) 20:03, 20 June 2026 (UTC)reply

Yes Done as I do not see any objections to the request in itself. If someone raises an issue with flooding, please come back for further permissions. Nemo 13:47, 2 August 2026 (UTC)reply

Requested user-rights: Interface administrator and Bot and IP block exempt.

As discussed in the previous request, I would like to maintain my gadget(s) and be able to automatically deploy from GitHub, which requires the IP block exempt flag. I would also like to make occasional fixes and maintenance like this. I have experience with the Interface Administrator and Template Editor flags for over five years on ruwiki (retired since 2022 of my own will). As a result of this request, I will make a new permission request for my bot account BirdBot for bot, Interface Administrator, and IP block exempt flags. Both my accounts have 2FA enabled and use bot passwords for automated edits. Serhio Magpie (talk) 19:59, 20 June 2026 (UTC)reply

  • I'll grant this request if there are no objections within a week.--Jasper Deng (talk) 20:33, 20 June 2026 (UTC)reply
  • Oppose Oppose i would prefer we just grant the ip block exemption to this person's primary account (or they do stuff in their bot's userspace). Giving iadmin to a bot seems like a big step and we should only do it where absolutely neccessary. Bawolff (talk) 23:18, 20 June 2026 (UTC)reply
I do not agree, and was the one to suggest that they put it in their bot's userspace. Separate accounts for bots are a must. Jasper Deng (talk) 07:11, 21 June 2026 (UTC)reply
  • I think it's more important to follow the principle of least privilege and not grant iadmin when we don't need to than it is to separate bot contributions from non-bot ones. Which means I basically agree with Bawolff. Although both goals can be satisfied by putting things in the bot's userspace. Pppery (alt) (talk) 04:06, 22 June 2026 (UTC)reply
  • I personally don't feel interested in transferring the gadget to the bot's userspace. Automatic deploy would only help slightly, I have no problem running deploy manually from my local terminal, as it doesn't happen that often. Thanks all for the comments and I apologize for all this inconvenience. Serhio Magpie (talk) 06:26, 14 July 2026 (UTC)reply

N Not done for lack of consensus, mostly because I do not understand what the request is now. I granted the original request which was uncontroversial (but may not achieve the intended result). I'm taking no position on whether it's appropriate for a sysop (let alone interface admin) to delegate editing permissions to GitHub. Nemo 13:50, 2 August 2026 (UTC)reply

User: Z. Patterson

Requested user-rights: Autopatroller.

I regularly translate documentation into Japanese and Spanish on MediaWiki, and I expect to translate into more languages in the future. I also copy edit English documentation. I am requesting this to save time and work for others to check recent changes and mark my edits as "patrolled". Z. Patterson (talk) 21:42, 1 August 2026 (UTC)reply

Yes Done No issue with this request. As for the translations, you may want to ask a native Spanish or Japanese translator to spot check some of your translations, if you're not a native speaker yourself. Nemo 13:44, 2 August 2026 (UTC)reply
