Wikisource:Mirror translation

The mirror translation process on Wikisource is an efficient way to expand the collaborative production of translations of free works, ensuring that the original content is preserved and easily reviewed by other editors. This guide outlines the step-by-step procedure for performing a mirror translation, starting with choosing a work that has already been transcribed in the original language on Wikisource. Preference is given to consolidated transcriptions, supported by documents digitized in Commons, already validated or, at the very least, reviewed.
The MediaWiki translation extension is used for the translation process. This extension offers a variety of features that streamline the translation workflow, allowing editors to focus on the content without worrying too much about the technical complexity. It also facilitates coordination between translators, as it provides a clear view of which parts have already been translated and which still need attention.
Steps to start a mirror translation
[edit]- Request the activation of the translation extension on your local wikisource.
- Choose a work that has already been transcribed on Wikisource in its original language. Give preference to consolidated transcriptions supported by a digitized document on Commons and where the transcribed content has already been fully validated or, at the very least, reviewed.
- Copy the entire code from the work using this tool to a page on the "In Translation" domain (may vary from wiki to wiki). Pay close attention to the formatting of the page title, as shown in the following example:
- Source page: Constitution of the United States of America - English Wikisource (language code: en)
- Target page: In Translation:Constitution of the United States of America (en) (the "In Translation" namespace may vary from wiki to wiki)
- Edition summary:
Copied from [[:en:Constitution of the United States of America]]
- Prepare the page for translation:
- Fixing red links of pages and templates, replacing them with local equivalents or removing them if they are not needed.
- Adding
{{Mirror translation}}to the top of the page. - Add translation markup according to the manual.
- Ask a translation administrator to enable translation on the page. They will:
- Change the page language in the system via Special:PageLanguage, adjusting the original language of the text.
- Finish the preparation via Special:PageTranslation, enabling translation into the local language as the priority language and limiting it to just that language.
- Let's get to work! There will be a link on the page called "Translate" that will open the translation interface.
- Once the translation is complete, create a corresponding page on the main domain. Insert the usual formatting (
{{Header}}, categories, etc...) and transclude the translated page according to the following example:{{Translate|Constitution of the United States of America (en)}}
