New England Wikimedians is a Wikimedian user group that has the goal of becoming the next recognized chapter in the United States. We represent all Wikimedians in New England, and were recognized on December 30, 2013.

Our mission as a user group is to provide outreach and assistance to non-Wikimedian organizations in the area, including funding and assistance at edit-a-thons and other events that are within our purview. Additionally, we are also willing to work with other organizations throughout the country, including those interested in founding a chapter in their area.

Although there is no Wikimedia United States, we are working with the Wikimedia United States Coalition and the Affiliations Committee in order to become a chapter. Additionally, we are also working with Wikimedia New York City and Wikimedia District of Columbia to share resources and funding, as well as plan events. Furthermore, we are in agreement with the District of Columbia chapter fiscally, so that we will have guidance to further strengthen our position when we finally decide to become a chapter.

Anyone interested in participating is welcome to sign up below, as we are welcoming to both Wikimedians and non-Wikimedians of all backgrounds and beliefs.

On Ada Lovelace Day (mid-October), Wikimedians in New England organize an annual edit-a-thon with two main goals: Encouraging women in particular to learn how to edit Wikipedia, and improving and adding articles on women in science, technology, engineering and math.

Wikipedia Loves Libraries (October)

Wikipedia Loves Libraries is the name of an ongoing effort to promote collaboration between the Wikipedia community and libraries, and during Open Access Week in the last full week of October this user group participates in that project by having a meetup in a library.

In addition, Open Access to Mass History is planned series of edit-a-thons during Open Access Week, broadly themed around Massachusetts history. See our schedule for more info -- there should be several Massachusetts sites and subjects to choose from!

Education and outreach

Wikimedians in New England send campus ambassadors to schools to perform Wikipedia outreach. Although this is not done directly by the organization, we work directly with the Wiki Education Foundation in order to find the right persons for the institutions. Wikimedians in New England also support Wikipedians in Residence at local organizations, and are more than happy to help any organization which wants to start a Wikipedian in Resident position.

Although we are not currently a non-profit foundation, we handle money and are working on incorporating by the end of 2015. We also have a set of minimal bylaws, although they are still being finalized. Our budget and financial history are at our finances page, although we have yet to handle any significant funds this year. Finally, we're working on working with the other chapters in order to collaborate on different projects through the Wikimedia United States Coalition.

Organization

Meetups

Article principal: w:Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston

For over ten years, beginning in 2003, the New England meetups were held on a roughly bimonthly schedule. Since the beginning of 2014, we are holding less meetups in order to consolidate interest, and hope to resume more frequent meetups in the coming months. These meetups are not only advertised above, but can also be found on our Meetup.com page.

Preliminary board

Currently, the New England Wikimedians user group does not have an official board. That being said, we have many users who have taken on various roles that fall in line with a board of directors. We plan on holding our first official election at our meetup in July, 2014.

Contacteu-nos

We are very interested in contacts with outside individuals and other organizations in the local community.

If you have a project you want to work on with us, this is a great opportunity to get acquainted. If you want someone to give a talk or teach a class with an inside view of Wikipedia, please e-mail one of us. And if you just have any questions, we'd be glad to try to answer them.

The best way to keep up to date with us is to watch this page, the New England Meetup, and to join the mailing list.
