Proposals for new projects

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
This is an archived version of this page, as edited by FCLeste (talk | contribs) at 09:43, 13 April 2007 (''Wikidioma''). It may differ significantly from the current version.

Note: In the very near future this page, among others, may be integrated into the process at Wikimedia Incubator. You may wish to withhold suggestions until the interchange is complete.

A copy of this page is in Incubator:Proposals for new projects

This page hosts proposals for new projects that are inline with the Wikimedia Foundation goal of spreading and promoting knowledge. Before adding a new proposal, see the New project policy. Please only make proposals on this page if you are willing to take responsibility for it; otherwise, post it on the discussion page.

If you want to propose a new language for an existing project, please do so on Requests for new languages. If you want to propose closing an existing project, see Proposals for closing projects. If you are suggesting an enhancement which requires a change to the MediaWiki software, please file a feature request in MediaZilla. If you have a proposal for any other type of enhancement to an existing project, please visit that project and attempt to gather interest there.

Information

Notes to consider

  • Hosting: Remember that the Wikimedia Foundation is not a free hosting company for any kind of wikis. If your project does not fit the Foundation's ideals, try a wiki hosting site such as Wikia or wikidev.net (see a list of wiki hosts with reviews), or download and host MediaWiki yourself.
  • History: Individuals attempting to create a new project may benefit from reading the Wikipedia timeline and Uses of a wiki.
  • Be persistent. Don't take criticism directed at proposals personally. There have been a number of mistakes made in the past in regards to starting up new project ideas, and several of the "veteran" users are afraid of repeating those same mistakes. New ideas are taken seriously, although it should be admitted that the process of going from an idea for a new project to actually turning on a server that is implementing that idea will take quite a bit of time and effort. If you are proposing these ideas, be willing to take some "arrows" in your back, a lot of criticism, cynicism, and outright disbelief that your ideas are going to work. If it really is a good idea, there will be others who will be willing to help you out as well. Be persistent and don't give up right away.

The last major project that made the jump from a project idea to something going on its own was Wikiversity. Some veteran users are suggesting that it will be a year or two before any other project idea will be accepted as a new separate project, if ever. If you want to see how a project idea has been successful, it would be wise to see what was done to go from idea to an actual project, please look at the project proposal page for Wikiversity. In particular, click on the history button and look back in time over some of the complications they went through before going "live". Any projects that don't live up to this sort of standard for coming into existance will likely not be considered as a new project by the Wikimedia Foundation's Board. Don't get discouraged, but it is not going to be easy either.

If you see something that doesn't fit into any current Wikimedia project, could be done using MediaWiki software, can be distributed using the GFDL (or very similar license) for republishing, please feel free to add a suggestion below.

It has been suggested that many of the current proposals could be merged into one of the main projects below.

  • Wikipedia: One other place to strongly consider is Wikipedia's series of subprojects, WikiProject. Many of the proposals listed below could be incorporated into one of those projects, or perhaps a new WikiProject could be started instead. Wikipedia is evolving and changing over time, and there is already quite a bit that can be adapted from the content on Wikipedia, not to mention involving people who commonly use and edit Wikipedia.
  • Wikisource: Wikisource also has a similar effort for larger subprojects of Wikisource that are focused on original source material that will require quite a bit of effort to transfer to that project. This would be things like historical dictionaries, encyclopedias, or other multi-volume reference works that are of a historical nature and can be copied according to the terms of the GFDL.
  • Wikibooks: In addition, it has been suggested on many of the proposals listed below that a good place to look would be with Wikibooks. If you are trying to put together a large collection of factual information into one place, starting a Wikibook may be a good place to go. If it doesn't quite fit Wikibooks, the other editors at Wikibooks will try to help you get to the correct place as well.

Existing projects

Before proposing a new project, make sure it doesn't already exist; see the list of existing projects below (see also the full list).

Main projects

Special projects

Also see Sites using MediaWiki.

Instructions

  1. Read the detailed information on the policy page.
  2. Create an account and a user page on this wiki, so people can address their questions to you.
  3. Create a page here at Meta where you describe your plan in detail and add this to the Proposed projects category.
  4. Add your proposal to this page using the recommended format.
  5. It is recommended that you advertise your project. Good places to do so are on Goings-on and on the Foundation-l mailing-list (account needed).

WeRelate

Naming Suggestions
WeRelate
Goal
Create an easy to use, non-sectarian and noncommerical genealogically formatted wiki, thus making it easy for family historians to collaborate and share genealogical research online. See the video
Details
WeRelate will be code complete very soon and would like to discuss affiliation with the WikiMedia Foundation. WeRelate is a free public service website created by the Foundation for On-Line Genealogy, Inc. (a 501C3 non-profit organization) and operated in partnership with the Genealogy Center at the Allen County Public Library (Second largest genealogy library in the world). WeRelate is currently the largest English language genealogy wiki with over 115,000 ancestor wiki pages, over 430,000 historical and current inhabited place pages, over 1,300,000 wiki source pages, over 115,000 wiki name pages plus articles. Participants are incouraged to document their research and include scanned images of their documentation and relevant photos whenever possible. See, sample page WeRelate includes:
  1. GEDCOM upload or "fill in the blanks forms" which automatically standardize format of person and family wiki pages. WeRelate Person and family wiki pages incorporate:
    1. citations linked to wiki source pages
    2. annotated family photos and document images. This allows participants to completely document research on the wiki page and include copies. See, annotated family picture and annotated document image
    3. automatically linking to relatives' wiki pages
    4. 5 generation pedigree view with links to all siblings, cousins, aunts and uncles with migration maps at the bottom of the page. See, pedigee map at bottom of page
  2. Wiki place index. WeRelate currently has over 430,000 current and historical inhabited places. We have combined data from Wikipedia, Getty, US government, and others. See, Sample place page Place pages include genealogically relevant data such as:
    1. Geocodes
    2. alternate and prior names
    3. contained places
    4. child and parent counties
    5. when certain records began to be kept
    6. research tips
    7. timelines
  3. Wiki names index. More than 115,000 given and surnames are linked to alternate spelling, nicknames and derivations.
  4. Wiki source index. More than 1.3 millions source wiki pages which include reference and access information along with place for research tips and reviews. Family historians can include citations by simply linking to the source's wiki page.
  5. Navigate with the Family Tree Explorer. This flash application splits the screen so the user can view the pedigree, descendancy, combined pedigree/descendancy or filterable index views in the left hand screen and still view and edit the wiki page in the right. See, http://www.werelate.org/fte/

Link to request on mailing list
http://mail.wikimedia.org/pipermail/foundation-l (HELP, please!!)
Naming suggestions
Wikitainment Guide, Wikitainment, the Pop-cult Guides
Domain name
http://www.wikitainment.com (state of registration)
Scope
A wiki designed to focus on all contemporary entertainment fiction in different media. Closely tied with Wikipedia, it will contain all the pop cult info about characters, episodes, series, comic book issues, movies, singers, bands, labels and videogames that is often labeled as "un-encyclopedic" by deletionist Wikipedia editors.
Wikipedia could move the information there. This would save a great deal of edit conflicts between Deletionist and inclusionist editors.
It will be divided in 7 or more classifications:
  1. Video Games
  2. Television
  3. Movies
  4. Comics
  5. Music
  6. Radio
  7. Toys
  8. Sports
  9. People
  10. Technology
  11. Fashion
  12. Books

Another possibility is instead of creating a whole new wiki, creating this wiki within Wikipedia as a siamese twin sister project of Wikipedia, or a sub-wiki.

Many Pharmaceuticals are already listed quite extensively in wikipedia.

However, so are many words and species, yet these have been granted their own projects. I think a wikiPDR-type community would be very convenient, especially since the online PDR is not available for free to the general public or researchers. I am a graduate student of pharmacology, but the online version of the definitive text of pharmacology is restricted only to one branch of the science-medical-research community. If interested, this could also be incoroporated into the Medical Dictionary mentioned above, however I think it would be best to keep the drug information in a wiki of it's own.

Even in our internet age, books are very important source of knowledge. The biggest problem is to find them. Even the catalogues of the greatest libraries are far from being complete. But, as experience shows, wikicommunity can do what great institutions cannot. The aim of wikibibliography is to become the great bibliographical catalogue. Each book will get an article with such information as author, publisher, year of publishing, ISBN. And of course, each article will have categories (by book's language, by topic..). It will be very useful for any researcher.

  • I think this is a great idea. I'm guessing the format would be a hierarchal tree of all knowledge in a similar way Wikispecies has been set up. I found an interesting article on the topic here. Though, I’m not sure that ontology is the correct terminology. Epistemology is probably closer to the ojective. Though, even that is not the accurate term. But wikiepistemology? Yuk! Someone with more knowledge on the matter would probably come up with a good name. I think it's only a matter of time when this needs to be done as the Dewey Decimal System dosn't quite cut it anymore when wikipedia itself is managing over 1.5 million articles. – E! On Wikipedia, there is a lot of terminology that can get pretty complicated, otherwise known as Jargon. Many of the users of Wikipedia are of a younger generation, say, 6-12th grade. For them, this terminology will make everything in that article seem to hard for them, which will lower the users of Wikipedia significantly. See the details for more.

I would like to mention that this is a perennial suggestion to have some project related to the formation and distribution of musical content, with suggestions to have different markup systems within the MediaWiki software and to even be able to edit MIDI files or musical scores. There certainly are some interesting things that could be done with music in a collaborative fashion, and this particular project should not be completely dismissed. --Roberth 17:56, 25 March 2007 (UTC)reply
(In response to Pcu123456789) This should not be part of Wikisource. When people think of a library, they generally think of books, not sheet music. Putting this at Wikisource would cause it to be neglected. This should be it's own project. Galanskov 21:51, 12 April 2007 (UTC)reply

WikiMobile

I propose that a Mobile Wiki page be created for each Wiki page. This function would allows users to select a summary of text for users on the go (like mobiles) or using devices with limited screen space. Main reason why this would be more sucessful then google: Users on Cellphones (mobiles) generally are paying for Internet data traffic, slow connection and limited small screen to sift through wanted info. A google search would most likely turn a lot of unwanted websites that don't address info that user is specifically looking for and not in a mobile friendly format. If a WikiMobile search was put in place all mobile search requests would be easy to access and a super convenient tool to have on the fly.
If there is any interest, I can elaborate on ideas on how to implement this most effectively.

Details
A price comparison website driven by MediaWiki. The general concept is to help you save time when you need a specific item by finding out which stores (online and brick-and-mortar) carry your item and where to like in the store. A probable tie-in with Google maps would make it easy to sort stores by travel distance.
