Wikizine - license why not {{cc-by-sa-2.5}} ?
Hi Walter,
thanks for publishing Wikizine and giving us regulary information about the "Wikimedia World". There is one thing I would like to propse: Please do not publish the content only under the GNU Free Documentation License.
Reason: The license GFDL is rather impractical for print media, because it requires the full text of the GFDL to be printed along with the text. Dual licensing with a license which allows the text to be used more easily, like a Creative Commons license (please see licenses at http://creativecommons.org/licenses/) proposal: cc-by-sa-2.5 and the GNU Free Documentation License or direct Public Domain is much better and we reader can use your information on other places. -- gildemax 16:03, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
- I used to use this wiki here for the construction of wikizine. So it was automaticly under the GNU/FDL. I use now my own wiki for it. Almost all of the text is written by me, some re-written by the correctors. But so long it is under the GNU/FDL I can take fragments of text from one of the wikis and use it in wikizine. I do not do that a lot but it happens.
- Is this really a problem? People read wikizine by email, RSS, website, sometimes the copy a fragment and translate it. Wikimedia projects is GNU/FDL, wikizine is for and about the WMF projects. In what situations would the current license be a problem? Greetings, --Walter Do you have news? Report it to Wikizine 01:03, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
- As per the terms of the GFDL if I use parts of your Wikizine or if I translate it, I have to publish the full text of the GFDL with this work. The GFDL is in my eyes, as I have written, not pratical for print media and imagems. The WIKINEWS e.g. are all under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License. The foundations has learned that now exists other more appropriate licenses. This is only a request to think about a dual licensing. Gretings -- gildemax 10:09, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
- There's no benefit to using cc-by-sa since it's not compatible with the GFDL. cc-by is a much easier to use license and compatible with all Wikimedia projects (including Wikinews which is not GFDL). Angela 12:19, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
- That problem I think there is that I want to be able to copy text fragments form one of the wikis, that is mostly meta, EN wikipedia or foundation and use that text like it is. Those wikis are all GNU/FDL. I do not think it is allowed to re-release text under a different licences if it contains text from a GNU/FDL-only license source. --Walter Do you have news? Report it to Wikizine 12:51, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
- I think thats a pretty good argument for keeping gfdl. As for wikinews compatibility, If there is news that affects us, I'm proablly not going to directly copy it out of wikizine, I'm proablly going to condense/re-write it as n:template:wn news is more suited to one liners (although I don't know what other lang do). In the end it doesn't matter very much for a wikizine type of publication, as really its not redistributed and re-edited that much. user:Bawolff (not looged in) 01:08, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

I have no plans to republish Wikizine, but since you asked for reader feedback:
- I definitely agree with Gildemax that the GNU FDL is impractical. Indeed, the world would be a better place if Wikimeda had been CC-by-sa from the start! (Unfortunately, there was no such thing in 2001.)
- Generally, you should be able to dual licence Wikizine. Your contributors would be willing to go along, right? This allows Wikizine to be copied directly into Wikimedia wikis.
- When you copy from Wikimedia wikis into Wikizine, isn't this usually to talk about that writing? If so, then this falls under fair use and commentary. You could do that even if Wikizine were proprietary!
- The recent extra edition that repeated a request from Anthere would be an exception. That edition could be released under GNU FDL only, even if the regular editions are dual licensed. (If you had time to ask, I'm sure that Anthere would give permission for CC-by-sa dual licencing, since she wants her message spread widely. But when there is not enough time, exceptions are possible.)

Sitenotice
- I've changed bpywiki Sitenotice, which wasn't related to the fundraising
(ফারাক) (ইতিহাসহান) . . MediaWiki:Sitenotice; ১১:০৫ . . (+১৭৮) . . M7 (য়্যারী | অবদান | থেপ কর) (Changed sitenotice (as per WMF Board of Trustees decision) - Change back after fundraising end.)
Do you know if a global query is possible that can tell if some local wiki has a local sitenotice "older" than xx days? Thank you, M/ 11:09, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
- Maybe a developer can do that. But actualy it will be easy; most wikis will no be updated. --Walter Do you have news? Report it to Wikizine 11:29, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
- The most wikis with a wrong sitenotice appear to be the wiki's with a different script. They have a sitenotice stating where to download that script. So if we have a list of all wiki's with a non-latin or standard script, it would be great already. Effeietsanders 13:01, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
- I'm working on a list of wikis that use a non standard sitenotice. Please note the information from the toolserver is ~6 days old; it may not reflect the most recent changes. Not all wiki's are available on the toolserver, but at least it gives some information. Valhallasw 17:27, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
- nl:Gebruiker:Valhallasw/Sitenotice contains the list of wikis known to the toolserver and with edited (non-original) contents. nl:Gebruiker:Valhallasw/Sitenotice-ok contains the list of wikis known to the toolserver and with the original contents. Wiki's with deleted contents (and no current pages) are not listed. Have fun. Valhallasw 19:17, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
narod.ru
Hello;
you've blacklisted that domain today due to spamming in the English Wikipedia. Can you please take a look at this discussion? I found 1194 links to *.narod.ru on en.wiki and 5538 on ru.wiki; I tried to restrict the regex but I haven't found the subdomain spammed. Thanks. --.anaconda 20:09, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

It is not a writing competition. This is the second edition for the prizes offered by some of the administrators (as seen in the jury) to the users who were present during the whole year in the project and were the best in their field of work. --Romihaitza 16:27, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

Indische koloniale geschiedenis
Politie in Nederlands Indie

Wikizine news
en.wikinew's Latest News RSS has seen dramatic growth recently. At the start of December it had just over 5,000 daily subscribers. That increased to 20,000 by December 12 and reached 36,000 on December 20! It has dropped slightly since then, with now just over 30,000 subscribers reading the latest news from Wikinews every day. Dan100 16:29, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
- How do you count those subscribers? Is the the number of times the file is requested? When I see my stats of Wikizine then I see for RRS 1873 times accessed in one month and for Atom 8174 times accessed. But taken that is a number of readers is ridiculous. --Walter Do you have news? Report it to Wikizine 17:19, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, should have said, I use Feedburner. To quote their explanation: "FeedBurner’s subscriber count is based on an approximation of how many times your feed has been requested in a 24-hour period. Subscribers is inferred from an analysis of the many different feed readers and aggregators that retrieve this feed daily. Subscribers is not computed for browsers and bots that access your feed.
Subscribers is calculated by matching IP address and feed reader combinations, and then using our detailed understanding of the multitude of readers and aggregators and bots on the market to make additional inferences."

Naughty comments
Walter, this is the second time you make a naughty comment regardin Romanian Wikipedia. Please bring proofs on the numbers of articles in January 7. A tip: use purge when checking!!! --Romihaitza 12:43, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
- When I visited the wiki the counter was well below 50,000. I agree that is must be that it was the cache and not deletion of articles. It have been that. But I wrongly assumed it was that. I have added a correction to the online version and will put a correction in the next edition. The end result was the same. A visitor would have seen a lower counter the announced. The advice is to flush the cache when your wiki hits a mile stone.
- About "Naughty comments"; some of the items are not very interesting by nature. I try to find a way to fraze it in a way it is not boring. It is not naughty. If I wanted to write something negative about RO wikipedia then I could have reported that the RO wikipedia is not helping with the fundraiser. I see no donation notice. --Walter Do you have news?
