The Photowalk and Documentation of Kandakarnan and Vasoorimala Theyyam at Kannur 2026 is a initiative by the Wikimedians of Kerala UG aimed at documenting traditional Theyyam performances in the Kannur region of Kerala, India.

Report

The program focuses on recording the rituals, costumes, and cultural contexts of the Kandakarnan and Vasoorimala Theyyam performances, which are important elements of the region’s ritualistic folk traditions. The documentation was done at Kanacheri Sree Kurumba Bhaghavati Temple, Munderi, Kannur Kerala.

The activity brought together Wikimedia contributors, photographers and volunteers to participate in a guided photowalk and videography event during the Theyyam season in Kannur. Participants documentent various aspects of the performance, including preparation rituals, costume details, surroundings of Kavu, and live performances. The collected photographs and related documentation will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons under free licenses, making them accessible for educational and cultural purposes.

The documentation from the photowalk will support Wikimedia Commons and related Wikipedia articles, helping expand freely accessible knowledge about Theyyam traditions and associated cultural practices.

The initiative is organized with the support of community partners and aims to strengthen collaboration between cultural documentation groups and Wikimedia volunteers.
