There have been various suggestions for a less combative and more productive alternative to Articles for Deletion -- at least one that is better able to handle more than thumbs up/down options. See Votes for merge for an example, from the days when AfD was still 'Votes for Deletion'.

The focus on deletion makes it hard to synchronize AfD work with closely related cleanup work, and many one-day-good articles get deleted in their first incarnation because a novice editor failed to follow various good-practice stubbing policies.
