இன்த முயற்ச்சி ஜனவரி 15,2001 ல் ஆங்கிலம் மொழியில் விக்கிபீடியா உடன் தொடங்கப்பட்டது.அதன் பிறகு ப்ரெஞ்ச் மொழியில்,பிறகு மற்ற மொழிகள் பலவற்றிலும் உண்டாயிற்று.இதனுடைய சர்வ தேச பரிணாமம் பற்றி தெரியப்படுத்த னிறைய முயர்ச்சிகள் எடுக்கப்பட்டு வருகிறது.
20 செப்டம்பர்,2004 ல் விக்கிபீடியாவில் 100 மொழிகளுக்கும் மேல் மொத்தம் 1,000,000 கட்டுரைகள் வெளியிடப்பட்டிருக்கின்றன.
மார்ச் 1ம் தேதி 2006 ல் ஆங்கில மொழியில் விக்கிபீடியா 1,000,000 கட்டுரைகளை பிரசுரித்தது.செப்டம்பர் 9ம் தேதி 2007 ல் ஆங்கில மொழியில் விக்கிபீடியா 2,000,000 கட்டுரைகளை எட்டியது.ஆகஸ்ட்டு 17 ம் தேதி 2009 ல்,3,000,000 க்கும்,ஜூலை 13ம் தேதி 2012 ல் 4,000,000 க்கும் னவம்பர் 1ம் தேதி 2015ல் 5,000,000 க்கும் எட்டியது.
மாதம்,வருடம் என்று கணக்கிட்டால்,$விபீ-100க்கும் அதிகமான விக்கிபீடியாக்களில் 100க்கும் மேல் கட்டுரைகளும்,$விபீ-10,000 க்கும் அதிகமான என்றால் 10,000க்கும் அதிகமான கட்டுரைகளும்,$விபீ-100,000 ல் 100,000 கட்டுரைகளும் இருக்கின்றன.
ஆங்கில மொழி விக்கிபீடியாவிர்க்கு பிறகு ,ஜெர்மன்(27டிஸம்பர் 2009),ப்ரெஞ்ச் (21 செப்டம்பர் 2010),டச்(17 டிஸம்பர் 2011),இத்தாலியன்(22 ஜனவரி 2013),ரஷ்யன் (11 மே 2013),ஸ்பானிஷ்(16 மே 2013),ஸ்வீடிஷ்(15 ஜூன் 2013),போலிஷ்(24,செப்டம்பர் 2013),வராய்(8 ஜூன் 2014),வியட்னமீஸ்(15 ஜூன் 2014),செபுனோ(16 ஜூலை 2014),ஜப்பானீஸ் ஆகிய மொழிகளில் 1,000,000 க்கும் அதிகமான கட்டுரைகள்.
செப்டம்பர் 5ம் தேதி 2015 ல் ச்வீடிஷ் விக்கிபீடியாவில் 2,000,000 கட்டுரைகள் அதன் பிறகு செபுனோ விக்கிபீடியாவில் 14 பிப்ரவரி 2016 ல் 2,000,000 கட்டுரைகளும் வெளியிடப்பட்டன.
On 27 April 2016, the Swedish Wikipedia hit 3,000,000 articles followed by the Cebuano Wikipedia on 25 September 2016.[1]
On 11 February 2017, the Cebuano Wikipedia hit 4,000,000 articles.[1]
On 8 August 2017, the Cebuano Wikipedia hit 5,000,000 articles.[1]
As of December 2020, there are 315 language editions of Wikipedia, which collectively have more than 55 million articles.

In 2004 Wikipedia won the Webby Award for "Community" and the Prix Ars Electronica for "Digital Community". In 2015, the Erasmus Prize was awarded to the Wikipedia community collectively.
