Telugu Wikipedia Workshop/Request for swags

Hi there, From Telugu wikipedia, we are organising a wiki academy at BV Raju Institute of Technologies(an Engineering College). Around 200 students are expected to attend the wiki academy. We are also planning a wiki hackathon for interested students, around 40 in number. For this event, I would be requiring badges(40 in number), stickers(200 in number).

Request for funding Telugu Wikipedia Mahotsavam 2013

The Telugu Wikimedia Community is organizing Telugu Wikipedia Mahotsavam 2013. And requires a funding of ₹ 2,00,000. The details of the fund expenses are:
Food(on all event day) - Rs. 50,000/-
Travel & Stay : Rs. 80,000/-
Event Management : Rs. 30,000/-
Printing & Stationery costs : Rs. 40,000/-
Total cost : Rs. 2,00,000/-
The surplus amount will be used for providing infrastructure for Telugu Wikipedia community to organise wikiacademies.

Swag request

I would like to request 4-5 T-shirts (XL or XXL preferable) and few badges(50)and stickers(200). These would be distributed in the event/s in Nagpur. While we have one college finalized where the event will happen, we are trying to rope couple of institutions more as well.

Contingency funding request from Tamil Wikipedia

Tamil Wikipedia is organizing an event in Chennai on 28th and 29th september to celebrate 10 years of Tamil Wikipedia. We have placed a grant request with WMF and it has been granted. However, we may not receive the amount in time to conduct the event successfully. Therefore, we kindly request CIS-A2K to provide contingency funding support. This request is supported by the Tamil Wikipedia community and the WMF grants committee will be kept in loop regarding this temporary arrangement. Once we receive the amount from WMF, we can repay this fund. The fund shall be transferred to the bank account of Ravishankar Ayyakkannu who is the primary coordinator for this event. An initial payment of 49,000 INR is requested at once to pay advance amounts for various vendors. In case we do not receive the amount from WMF until the event, we may request a second payment of 1,19,000 INR--Ravi (talk) 07:36, 15 September 2013 (UTC)reply

Support for 12th Year Celebrations of Swathanthra Malayalam Computing

2013 marks the 12th year of Swathanthra Malayalam Computing's existence. - we grew up right along side the growth of digital Malayalam , from the first unsure steps to the current confident stride. For the first time, we are going to hold a large scale celebration that will honor free software, its developers, digital malayalam ecosystem, Free Content, and our beloved mother tongue. October 14,15 will see the kickoff, at Kerala Sahithya Academy Hall, Thrissur. We are planning 12th Year celebrations as an year long series of events with developer workshops, Localisation camp, user trainings and conferences. The 12th anniversary celebrations will kick start with a 2 day conference on October 14-15, in Kerala Sahitya Academy, Thrissur.

This 12 year Celebration Inaugural conference is planned as a 2 day public event to to recognize FOSS developers contributed to the Malayalam computing efforts, discuss challenges and to generate more Interest of public and academia in the language computing domain. The first day of the event will have inauguration, recognizing contributors, presenting new student contributions under Google Summer of Code 2013 and 2 panel discussions. Second day of the conference will feature various panels discussing the Technologies, way forward and challenges in front of Language Computing . The conference also have a wikimedia Track and a Wiki Volunteers meet.

WikiSangamotsavam 2013/Malayalam Wiki Conference 2013

WikiSangamotsavam 2013, the annual gathering of users and well wishers of Malayalam Wikimedia projects, will take place on 21, 22 and 23 December, 2013 in Y.M.C.A Hall, Alappuzha, Kerala. Please click here to go to official page at Meta to see more details.

We expect CIS as a major supporter of this event along with WMF and WIMIN. As per the detailed estimates given in Expenses page, we request you to allot Rs.1,50,440 and 300 T-Shirts for Wikisangamotsavam 2013.

Escalation of budget estimate

Due to unavoidable situations, now the Wiki Students Meet will have to host an additional 50 more students. This is because, the committee had to accept and approve a proposal to also invite the accomplished students of 2012 ml Wikisource Digitization projects. We had not distributed any valuable appreciations or rewards to them last year. Now that they are attending the function, obviously we will have to arrange bags for them too!

Therefore, we are afraid that we will have to increase the number of Student Bags by a corresponding sum.

Contingency funding request for Kolkata Book fair 2014

Kolkata wikimedia Community will attend and participate in the Kolkata Book Fair 2014 (http://www.kolkatabookfair.net/) (29 January to 9 February 2014). The 'Kolkata Book Fair' is one of the most prestigious and active cultural event in India for last thirty five years. It is the world's largest non-trade book fair, Asia's largest book fair and the most attended book fair in the world. The estimated number of people attending this book fair is around 1,500,000 people.We have placed a grant request with WMF and it has granted 3,16,000 Indian Rupees. However, we may not receive the amount in time to conduct the event successfully. Therefore, we kindly request CIS-A2K to provide contingency funding support. This request is supported by the Kolkata Wikimedia community and the WMF grants committee will be kept in loop regarding this temporary arrangement. We have to submit the application with INR 2,00,000 to Book fair organized "Publishers & Book Sellers Guild" . So please transfer the INR 2,00,000 to the bank account of "Publishers & Book Sellers Guild" as soon as possible (before 18 December)

Release of Ayurvedic texts on Sanskrit Wikisource.

About Ayurveda

Ayurveda (Sanskrit Āyurveda आयुर्वेद, "life-knowledge") or Ayurvedic medicine is a system of traditional medicine native to the Indian subcontinent and a form of alternative medicine. The oldest known ayurvedic texts are the Suśrutha Saṃhitā and the Charaka Saṃhitā.[1] These Classical Sanskrit texts are among the foundational and formally compiled works of ayurveda.

About Project

An ancient proverb states, ‘When diet is wrong medicine is of no use, when diet is correct medicine is of no need’. This simplest philosophy is based on an ancient and unique science called Ayurveda. Ayurveda is the oldest medical system in the world known to human. Derived from its ancient Sanskrit roots - ‘ayus' (life/longevity) and ‘ved' (knowledge/science) – and offering a rich, comprehensive outlook to a healthy life, its origins go back nearly 5000 years. Einstein once quoted, “Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better." While allopathic medicine tends to focus on the management of disease, Ayurveda bestows us with the knowledge of how to prevent disease and how to eliminate its root cause if it does occur by returning back to the nature from where the healing begins. The oldest known texts on Ayurveda are the Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and the Ashtanga Hrudaya. These texts detail the affect that the five elements found in the cosmic system - earth, water, air, fire, ether – have on our individual system, and expound on the importance of keeping these elements balanced for a healthy and happy life. Ayurveda gives a lifestyle that blends the health of body, mind, emotions, soul, nature and spirit. Explore this ancient unique form of Indian medicine and help us contribute to our traditional heritage on ‘Ayurveda on Wikipedia’. Returning back to nature through modern vision….

The problem

There are several issues related to Ayurved. One of the most prominent is that its texts are not available online! The other one is there are differences of opinion even in experts related to proper translation of the texts. There are several logical fallacies in the concepts as well. Many other issues are linked to it. But the most important issue which we can identify is non availability of the material to common people who are interested to know it.

The solution

Making these texts available is the solution. (A primary and very import step to issue many problems!)

Role of Wikipedia / sister projects

1) Making the texts available in original language. (Mainly Sanskrit) 2) Translation (If possible) 3) Use of this material in different Wikipedia articles after scrutiny.

Actual work

  • Participants will learn to edit Sanskrit Wikisource.
  • They will gain the thrill of adding to the body of knowledge of Sanskrit Wikisource in terms of knowledge of Ayurveda.

  • Awareness of the related issues and feeling of empowerment among participants that they can contribute to solve the issues.
  • Opening the possibilities of making the online translation available.
  • Awareness of the challenges and opportunities in this direction in the minds of general public.

I talked to concerned authority to conduct a workshop in English, Telugu and Odia (Optional) Wikipedia Workshop in NIT, Warangal here. They need a formal proposal letter to the concerned authority. These things I informed to Subhashish Panigrahi. They are keeping more stress on English and Telugu Wikipedia, so we can make Odia Wikipedia Workshop as optional. Contingency funding request for Tewiki10

Telugu wikimedia is celebrating ten years (http://te.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:Tewiki10) at Vijayawada on 15th & 16th February, 2014. Around 100 wikipedians, and tens of students are expected to attend the event. We have placed a grant request with WMF and got approval for 4,29,300 Indian Rupees. However, we may not receive the amount in time to conduct the event successfully. Therefore, we kindly request CIS-A2K to provide contingency funding support. This request is supported by the Telugu Wikimedia community and the WMF grants committee will be kept in loop regarding this temporary arrangement. We have to give away cash prizes towards Komarraju Lakshmana Rao award winners as cheques in their names - which needs to be done before the actual event (for Rs. 1,00,000/-).

An initial payment of 50,000 INR and cheques above are requested at once. Malayalam Wikisource Digitization Contest, 2014 Prize Distribution Event & Wiki Workshop, Thrissur

[This grant request is in an early draft stage. The same will be elaborated and refined at the earliest with precise details of costs, benefits and event organization. Since the event timeline is very near, it is requested to consider and expedite this grant application on an emergency basis.]

Introduction

The Malayalam Wikisource community conducted an intensive digitization contest in the month of January 2014. The event was a great success resulting in more than 12000 pages of Malayalam books being converted into digitally accessible format by hundreds of individual Wikimedia volunteers and thousands of school students.

The prize distribution ceremony for the event was however delayed due to non-avalibility of organizational manpower since the conclusion of the event. Now that the schools have been re-opened for the new academic year some of the coordinators and Wikisource volunteers are prepared to conduct an event combining the prize distribution ceremony and a Wikipedia training workshop for the general public.

About the event

Wikisource project, a project of Wikimedia foundation is celebrating its tenth anniversary. As a part of the decennary celebrations, the Wikisource projects in various languages all over the world are conducting competitions that enrich their contents, including but not limited to proof-reading and digitization. Being a part of it, Wikisource's Malayalam version - Wiki Grandhasala community, a voluntary unit engaged in collecting and digitizing valuable Malayalam books of yesteryear, is organizing a digitization (Typing & Proofreading) competition, along with various Government as well as Non-Government establishments and other voluntary organisations with similar interests like Kerala Sahithya Academy, IT@ school Project, Swathanthra Malayalam Computing and Center for Internet and Society (CIS-A2K) under the banner of Malayalam Wiki community.. This digitisation competition is being conducted as a part of an effort that collects Malayalam Books whose copyright date has expired in digital form (in unicode format) preserving the content and making them more accessible and popular. The competition lasts for a month, starting on January 1, 2014 and ending on Jan 31, 2014. The competition focuses especially individuals and schools and includes some attractive prizes including E-book readers, Tablets and selected books for those who lead the scoreboard. In this competition, books that was recently released by Kerala Sahithya Academy to its public collection will be digitized.

The prizes (like E-book readers, Portable scanners) are sponsored by Center for Internet and Society, Kerala Sahithya Academy and Swathanthra Malayalam Computing. Also, certificates will be awarded to all students who participate in the school level competition and IT@school coordinators, for their coordination activities.

Malayalam Wikimedia Hackathon - 2014

The Malayalam Wikimedia community has scheduled a Hackathon to be held as a precursor to the upcoming Wikisangamotsavam 2014, at Ernakulam. The two day program was finally fixed through a fast-track plan in order to ensure maximum participation. The organisers for this event would like CIS to help them by way of providing the essential costs.

In the Hackathon, there will be a knowledge transferring sessions on various wiki related technicalities.

Sessions will focus Templates, Citations, Illustration, Wikidata, Category, Scanning, Bots, Media uploads, Geo-coding, tables and other open software.

Funding request from Bengali Wikipedia 10th Anniversary Celebration Kolkata

Bengali Wikipedia Kolkata(Bengal) Community is organizing an event in Kolkata on 9th and 10th January to Bengali Wikipedia 10th Anniversary Celebration in Kolkata. We have placed a grant request with WMF and expected approve this grants.

Earlier we had planned for venue at Presidency University, Kolkata, but they suddenly they had denied to host. We will invite 45 wikimedian delegates from all Indic language Wikipedias and 15 wikimedian of Bangla Wikipedia from Bangladesh with scholarship. Also we have a option for joining this conference with a registration fee from the all over India. We will accept maximum (100 Normal people + 100 student) 200 people from registration (Rs 500 each and Rs 200 each for student). depending on demand we will increase the seat. All registered participants would be provided with meals during the two days conference hours.We are expecting a footfall of around 200-300. Atanu Saha,Assistant Professor,School of Languages and Linguistics,Jadavpur University,Kolkata, will book the conference Hall and guest house on behalf of community. Therefore, we kindly request CIS-A2K to transfer Rs 50,000/- to the bank account of Mr Atanu Saha ASAP.

Support Update

Dear Bengali Wikipedia Kolkata(Bengal) Community, Thanks for posting the request for community support for the Wikipedia Conference in Kolkata. We will be more than glad to extend the following support to this community event from CIS-A2K.

  1. Support upto Rs. 1,50,000/- from the CIS-A2K's WMF-FDC Grant (we would prefer paying the community identified vendors directly. This will save the organizing committee's time).
  2. Swag support of upto 150 Wikipedia T-shirts if the community requests (these are pre-designed Wikipedia T's which most of you have seen/used already).
  3. CIS-A2K will be happy to re-route the WMF PEG Grant (if and when it comes through), should the community request for it with WMF concurrence.
  4. CIS-A2K will send one of its team members to help with the logistics and event management for a week, if the community thinks it will be of help.
  5. CIS-A2K will be more than glad to support the community with the Media coverage for the event.
  6. CIS-A2K has institutional ties with Jadavpur University where the event is planned. We will explore all possible ways to ensure maximum support is given to the community.

Please note that we have already advanced an amount of Rs. 50,000/- for this event, as per the above request, into the account of Mr. Atanu Saha.

Request for funding Odia Community meetup and workshop

The Odia Wikimedians are planning a get-together to celebrate the launch of Odia Wikisource, on 29th and 30th November 2014, at Bhubaneswar. We are planning to conduct an advanced workshop/TTT for Odia Wikimedians joined recently. As per the talk page discussion we need:

Telugu Wikimedia Hackathon - 2014

The Telugu Wikipedians' Community has decided to organise a hackathon to enhance the skills of existing Wikipedians. This one day program is aimed at allowing Wikipedians to use Mediawiki tools more effectively.

In the Hackathon, there will be a knowledge transferring sessions on various Mediawiki related technicalities.

Sessions will focus Templates, References, Image usage, Wikidata, Category, Scanning, Bots, Media uploads, Geo-coding, tables and other open software.

Telugu Wikimedia Community will attend and participate in the Hyderabad Book fair 2014 (16 to 25 December 2014). The Hyderabad Book fair is one of the most prestigious and active cultural event in India for last thirty five years. It is the world's largest non-trade book fair, Asia's largest book fair and the most attended book fair in the world. The estimated number of people attending this book fair is around 15, 00,000 people. We kindly request CIS-A2K to provide contingency funding support. We need ‘‘‘INR 65,000 from CIS resource. We are providing the details of a budget of INR 65,000 which is mostly for internet charges, SWAGs and other incidentals.

Malayalam Wikimedia Annual Meetup - 2014
