About the Project
The FKA Wikisource Campaign is a community editing campaign organised by Free Knowledge Africa, aimed at improving and expanding African public domain works on Wikisource. Over the course of one month (21 June – 20 July), participants are invited to transcribe, proofread, and validate selected public-domain texts, helping to make these works freely accessible to all.
This initiative is part of Free Knowledge Africa's broader mission to increase African participation in open knowledge projects and to preserve and share knowledge in the public domain.
The campaign has two tracks: an '''individual track''' for general public domain works, and a '''team track''' where groups collaborate to fully complete public domain newspapers from start to finish. Teams self-organise, claim newspapers on a first-come-first-served basis, and work through the full Wikisource workflow together.
Goals
- Increase the number of transcribed, proofread, and validated public domain works on English Wikisource
- Onboard new editors to Wikisource and the broader Wikimedia movement
- Build a sustained community of African Wikisource contributors
- Demonstrate the value of open knowledge and free culture across African communities
How to Participate
Step 1: Create a Wikimedia Account
If you do not already have one, create a Wikimedia account. The same account works across all Wikimedia projects.
Step 2: Sign Up on the Dashboard
Register for the campaign via the official dashboard link:
All contributions must be made while logged into the account registered on the dashboard in order to be counted.
Step 3: Learn How to Contribute
New to Wikisource? See the resources below:
Step 4: Join or Form a Team (Optional)
If you would like to participate in the Newspaper Team Challenge, you need to be part of a team. Teams are self-organised, you can form one with friends, fellow Wikimedians, or anyone else who signs up for the campaign
- To form a new team: Add your team name and members to the Teams & Newspaper Claims table below, then claim a newspaper for your team.
- To join an existing team: Contact the team's listed members and ask them to add you to their entry in the table.
- There is no minimum or maximum team size, but keep in mind that Wikisource does not allow the same person to both proofread and validate the same page — so teams of at least two are strongly recommended to be able to fully complete a newspaper
Step 5: Start Contributing
Head to the selected works or your team's claimed newspaper and begin contributing.
Selected Works
The following public domain works have been selected for this campaign. Participants should focus their contributions on these texts.

More works may be added during the campaign. Check back regularly.
Teams & Newspaper Claims
Teams self-organise and claim newspapers on a first-come-first-served basis. Once a newspaper is claimed by a team, other teams may not claim the same title. Any team may claim additional newspapers after completing their current one.
To claim a newspaper: Edit this section and add your team's row to the table, filling in your team name, members, and the newspaper you are claiming. Leave the "Status" column as "In progress" until the newspaper is fully complete.
Important: Because Wikisource does not allow the same editor to both proofread and validate the same page, each team needs at least two members to be able to fully complete a newspaper.
Newspaper Team Challenge
A special prize category is reserved for the team that fully completes the highest number of newspapers by the end of the campaign (20 July).
- A newspaper is fully complete when all its pages have been transcribed, proofread, validated, and transcluded.
- Each completed newspaper earns the team 10 bonus points on the Team Leaderboard.
- Prize details will be announced shortly — stay tuned!
Available Newspapers
More newspapers will be added during the campaign. A completed newspaper (all pages transcribed, proofread, validated, and transcluded) earns the team 10 bonus points.
Scoring System
Points are awarded for each type of contribution as follows:
| Contribution Type | Points per Page |
|---|---|
| Completed Newspaper (For teams only) | 10 points |
| Transcribing | 2 points |
| Proofreading | 3 points |
| Validating | 1 point |
Points are automatically tracked via the campaign dashboard based on contributions to the selected works during the campaign period (21 June – 20 July).
