Purpose

The world is changing around us. As the Wikimedia movement navigates this moment we need to deepen our understanding of how the world and internet are changing around us and how these changes are impacting our people and projects.

Wikimedians have already begun discussing global trends – from declining trust in online information, to the rise of AI-generated content, shifting regulatory landscapes, and more. The “correct” response is not always clear — but our movement’s capacity for collaboration and knowledge sharing uniquely positions us to learn our way forward through uncertainty.

The Wikimedia Futures Lab is a process and convening designed to spark a period of focused experimentation across the movement. It will help us ask what the world needs from us and accelerate our ability to understand what works in this new environment.

Through a series of conversations, the Wikimedia Futures Lab aims to fulfill three goals:
