The Fante Wikimedia Community is a Wikimedia mission align Group in Ghana with a mission to enhance the visibility of the Fante language on Wikipedia and ultimately preserve the culture and heritage of the Fante tribe in Ghana. Fante, also known as Fanti, Fantse, or Mfantse, is one of the three principal members of the Akan dialect continuum, along with Asante and Akuapem
Fante is spoken by at least 2 million people in Ghana. It is principally spoken in the central and southern regions of Ghana as well as in settlements in other regions in western Ghana. Notable speakers include Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, and former Ghanaian presidents Kwame Nkrumah and John Atta Mills. Maya Angelou learned Fante as an adult during her stay in Ghana.

The Fante Wikipedia incubator and Fante on translatewiki was revived after the Twi translatewiki project. This was because the event hosted participants who speak Fante and would like to contribute in Fante

Objectives

  • Preserve the culture and heritage of the Fante tribe in Ghana
  • Enhance the visibility of Fante language on Wikipedia
  • Encourage editing on Wikipedia in local languages.
  • Increasing the vocabulary of modern concepts, materials in Fante
  • Expanding the scope of nomenclature for medicinal plants, biological and botanical species etc.

Activities

This community plans to hold and support the following activities:

  1. Meetings the community will be organising meet-ups for its members in order to exchange ideas and to find ways to support them to continue editing the projects in areas where they would need help.
  2. Movement Strategy Meetings quarterly meetups inviting speakers or other Wikimedians to educate the community on the 2030 movement strategy to help get our community members involved in movement activities.
  3. Edit-a-thons to help new Wikipedians learn editing techniques, to create, translate and improve content in all Wikimedia projects or work on and develop a certain topic which will in return promote the project.
  4. Editing contests the group will be organizing editing contests to encourage existing regular editors to keep editing Wikimedia projects and also encourage non-members/users to join.

Support

Please list yourself here. It's not necessary to list yourself to participate in Fante Wikimedia Community activities, or to comment on our projects; it's just an informal headcount and directory to look up community members and well-wishers.
Simply typing four tildes (~), like this: ~~~ below the numbered list, will automatically generate your signature and time stamp.
