The Assamese Wikimedia Community (Assamese: অসমীয়া ৱিকিমিডিয়া সমাজ) is a user group of wikimedians who work on various wiki projects related to the Assamese language. Assamese wikimedians are committed to advancing the Wikimedia (Free Knowledge) movement in the Assamese language.

This group aims to establish a centralised hub for advancing the collective efforts that were previously pursued by different members, primarily as individual initiatives. Additionally, this forum intends to consolidate all reports and documentation from past initiatives in one accessible location, providing valuable resources for future members.

Reasons and justification

Assamese is primarily spoken in the northeastern Indian state of Assam, where it holds official status, and it also serves as a lingua franca for the broader Northeastern region of India. It boasts a speaker base of over 15 million people.

Assamese Wikipedia needs more offline events (meet-ups/conferences) to enhance its development. We encourage representatives to step forward and organise these activities. This user group will focus on strengthening the Assamese Wikipedia within local communities. Currently, many Assamese Wikipedia editors work independently, and there is a requirement to coordinate their endeavours. This group will help formulate and execute a well-defined roadmap for the future.

Objectives

To bring together all Assamese-speaking Wikimedians scattered around the world on a single platform, enrich Assamese Wikimedia projects through offline and online events.
To increase public awareness of Wikimedia projects in Assam by organising events and workshops.
To collaborate with other Wikimedia communities and groups to promote Wikimedia projects in Assam and North-East India.
To encourage new editors by mentoring and capacity building through tailored guidance from experienced editors and workshops.
To increase content about Assam on other Wikipedias.

Ongoing Activities

A community online meet is organised on the first Sunday of every month.
A newsletter called 'Wikipatrika' is published on the first day of every month that highlights the monthly progress and updates from all the wiki projects.
