With this new feature, campaign organizers will save time, since they will no longer need to develop alternative registration solutions. Also, they will be able to collect better data on campaign participants and their needs while respecting participant privacy. Meanwhile, campaign participants will be able to join campaigns with minimal effort, and their first point of contact in the campaign will be fun and inspiring.

We have big plans for the future of registration. First, we hope to integrate the registration feature with existing tracking tools, like [[<tvar name="1">Special:MyLanguage/Programs & Events Dashboard</tvar>|Programs & Events Dashboard]] and [[<tvar name="2">Special:MyLanguage/Event Metrics</tvar>|Event Metrics]]. This means that, after participants have registered, their usernames will be automatically pushed to the tracking tool specified by the organizer.

Second, we hope that an on-wiki registration solution fosters a greater sense of community. Right now, many campaign participants don’t know who else has registered, especially if they register through third-party platforms. With a new registration solution, participants can see who joined the campaign and who shares common interests or motivations with them.

Once we have built registration, we can use the tool as a building block for later projects and features in the platform.

Nearly every organizer we have spoken to has designed their own registration solution. Some of these solutions are learned from other organizers and some come from previous organizing experience. Others are designed around specific technical requirements. Our goal is not to design the first registration system, but to provide an improved solution that helps create a consistent workflow for organizers in different contexts.

Some organizers have built elaborate technical fixes for registration. The disadvantage is that they are removed from Wikimedia workflows, and they have varying privacy and open source policies. Participants cannot see registrant information either, so they have little understanding of how to connect with other registrants. Also, these platforms are not universally supportive of languages and cultural contexts. In smaller language communities or at-risk contexts, these tools often prove challenging to use in an inclusive and safe way.

However, wikis can change the default setup, if they wish, by [[<tvar name="1">Special:MyLanguage/Requesting wiki configuration changes</tvar>|requesting a configuration change]] in Phabricator (and adding the campaigns-product-team tag). Participants of past events can cancel their registration at any time (including after the event has ended), if they no longer want to be on a participant list.

In July 2022, we released V0 on the beta cluster. We collected feedback on V0 in a variety of formats, including: a Google Form, multilingual presentations at office hours and Wikimania, discussions on this project page, communication in off-wiki chat groups, and direct emails sent to us. People provided responses in Arabic, English, French, Portuguese, and Swahili. In total, we heard from over 30 Wikimedians.

We received a lot of positive feedback on V0. For example, when we asked people if they would use the tool, over 80% of the respondents to the question said yes. When we asked Wikimedia organizers if they think access to the tool would make them more likely to organize events in the future, 90% of the respondents said yes. Some common forms of positive feedback included: the tool was intuitive and easy to use, it would save time for organizers, and it would improve organizers’ abilities to collect information on participants. Since this is only an early test version (and we plan to release further enhancements in later versions), it was very exciting for the team to hear that even this version pleased many Wikimedians.

Some people said that they already had registration solutions that they preferred or that they only wanted to use the tool after they had more time to test it. We also received many feature requests.
