Welcome, newcomers and baffled oldtimers! This is the place if you (a) have a question about Wikiquote and how it works or (b) a suggestion for improving Wikiquote. Just click the link above "create a new topic", and then you can place your submission at the bottom of the list, and someone will attempt to answer it for you. (If you have a question about who said what, go to the reference desk instead.)
Before asking a question, check if it's answered by the Wikiquote:FAQ or other pages linked from Wikiquote:Help. Latest news on the project would be available at Wikiquote:Community portal and Wikiquote:Announcements.
Before answering a newcomer's question abruptly, consider rereading Please do not bite the newcomers.
Questions and answers will not remain on this page indefinitely (otherwise it would very soon become too long to be editable). After a period of time with no further activity, information will be moved to other relevant sections of Wikiquote, (such as the FAQ pages) or placed in one of the village pump archives if it is of general interest, or deleted. Please consider dating and titling your discussions so as to facilitate this.
Merge the rollbacker group to the patroller group?

- I filed phab:T432557 per below. Codename Noreste (talk) 02:16, 20 July 2026 (UTC)
So a random thought just came to my head—should we consider merging the rollbacker user group into the patroller user group? Currently, rollbackers can only revert edits, but they cannot edit or move pages under autopatroller protection. Additionally, there is only one non-admin patroller who is active in patrolling new pages (aside from admins).
What this proposal does is that rollbacker will be discontinued, and users in the patroller group will also receive the rollback user right (all previous rollbackers will be granted patroller rights). This is similar to the English Wikibooks whose reviewers (editor) can rollback edits and review with FlaggedRevs. Thoughts? Codename Noreste (talk • contribs) 01:38, 12 July 2026 (UTC)

Marathon
[edit]Dear colleagues, hello! My name is S. Marchenko, I am a user of Wikimedia Foundation Russian language projects and a VRT agent. I actively edit the Russian version of Wikiquote, and recently I had the idea to hold an international marathon to improve and expand Wikiquote articles in different languages. In connection with this, I created a competition page on Meta m:Wiki Loves Quotes 2026, where you can also register your local community. I really hope you find it interesting! Sincerely, S.Marchenko (talk) 18:07, 15 July 2026 (UTC)

Add an edit count requirement for autoconfirmed users?
[edit]Currently, promotion to become an autoconfirmed user only requires waiting four days, which allows vandalism-only accounts and LTAs to vandalize (such as Special:Contributions/Lester Boggs) and evade some abuse filters. I am proposing that we include a minimum edit count requirement such as either 5 or 10 edits. Thank you. Codename Noreste (talk • contribs) 23:13, 15 July 2026 (UTC)

Support, that is currently the way things are on the English Wikipedia, I don't see a reason why Wikiquote should have different requirements because vandalism can always occur. I support the same requirements as the English Wikipedia so 10 edits and four days is sufficient for this discussion. Qwerty123M (talk) 09:08, 17 August 2026 (UTC)
Should we appoint new functionaries?
[edit]The last time we've had local checkusers (if at all) was more than 10 years ago (way before my time), and since then, we've relied on the stewards to perform checks. If we were to have local checkusers, I would suggest having three checkusers (all appointed by community consensus, with a minimum of 25 votes), and checks may be requested at the administrators' noticeboard. Codename Noreste (talk) 17:20, 21 July 2026 (UTC)
- I think it's a good idea to appoint them at this point. We now have a good number of active contributors, so there's little harm in giving it a try and seeing if the minimum vote requirement can be met. If it isn't met, we can continue relying on the stewards as we have been. If local checkusers are appointed, I think it'd be better to create a separate page for check requests instead of using the administrators' noticeboard, as it would make it easier to keep a clear record and history of requests. Saroj (talk) 07:25, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
- I think it's a generally good idea for mature and vibrant WMF communities to have local CUs and to self-police.

- @Koavf, @Lemonaka and @Saroj; should we start the votes now? This was running for slightly more than two weeks and the votes say there is consensus to elect local CUs. Codename Noreste (talk • contribs) 00:17, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
- Not sure that I'm following. There are votes below. ―Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 06:00, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
- The problem is always not the consensus to elect local CUs or not, instead, is this project hard to find more than 15 valid users to vote in such elections. I've discussed this about 2 years ago in admin mailing list but at that time there isn't enough user to vote. Hopefully this time we will get enough users. -Lemonaka 10:45, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
- I agree that the real challenge isn’t about consensus on electing local CUs, but rather ensuring we have enough active participation to make the process meaningful. The lack of quorum in past attempts shows how difficult it can be to mobilize more than 15 valid voters. That said, the community has grown since your earlier discussion on the admin mailing list, and I share your hope that this time we’ll reach the necessary threshold. If we can encourage broader engagement and remind users of the importance of these elections, we might finally achieve a sustainable model for local CU selection. - sometimes WQ users are obliged to restart Internet connection and use multiple IP addresses due to an automatic filter blocking policy, which is not founded on a real risk for WQ website's integrity. At the second time the user tries to publish his/her article, then the website works well.
- Often blocked contributions are constructive and do not include spam.
- The automatic filter does not work well on Wikipedia too. ~2026-45442-42 (talk) 21:42, 18 August 2026 (UTC)

Global rights policy

- Since this is a one-time use, this shouldn't be an issue, MathXplore. However, if someone has a pattern of using
suppressredirectfrom a global group (and not from a local group) for any reason other than reverting page-move vandalism, an administrator may ask them to stop usingsuppressredirectonly, provided they have not misusedrollbackor any other user rights. Create a non-admin extended mover group?
[edit]I would like to propose that we create an extended mover user group (extendedmover). It would have the following user rights:
delete-redirectto delete single revision redirects; administrators do not need to have that right as they havedeleteinstead.moveto allow moving pages; per noc.wikimedia.org, extended movers in other projects explicitly have this user right.move-subpagesto allow moving pages with their subpages.suppressredirectto not create redirects when moving pages.tboverrideto override the local and global title blacklists when moving pages.
Currently, only administrators have these special user rights when they access the page move interface, hence this proposal. Thoughts? Codename Noreste (talk • contribs) 20:10, 27 July 2026 (UTC)
- Looking at Special:Log/move, there hasn't been that many moves without leaving redirects. Has there been a lot of requests for these moves to administrators? Tenshi! (Talk page) 15:19, 13 August 2026 (UTC)
Creation of an English Wikiquote Discord server
[edit]I was thinking of creating an English Wikiquote Discord server, but what channels should we create for that server? I will host it. No votes are required, as this is a community consultation. Codename Noreste (talk • contribs) 21:08, 3 August 2026 (UTC)
- I entirely support anyone else using this if they want, but I will not be using it since 1.) Electron applications are insecure, 2.) I think that discussion should stay on-wiki, and 3.) Discord is by far the ugliest and most confusing website I've ever seen (with the possible exception of Red Smoke). As for actually answering your question, if you want to solicit it, en.wikt users (not myself) use it, so you could check en:wikt:WT:DISCORD and mimic what you think is applicable. ―Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 21:27, 3 August 2026 (UTC)
- The link is here. On-wiki administrators will have the administrator role. Codename Noreste (talk • contribs) 18:07, 4 August 2026 (UTC)
- Sorry, I'd better not use that. Private discussion among sysops would be better on administrator mailing list and more importantly, off site discussion are usually hard to monitor and analyse, which may cause some burden further if badly dealt with. -Lemonaka 04:56, 11 August 2026 (UTC)

New user scripts
[edit]Hi everyone, I've created two user scripts that may be useful:
- CatSync – Syncs categories from a corresponding article on another Wikimedia project using Wikidata sitelinks.
- AddSitelink – Adds a sitelink from the current page to an existing Wikidata item using a corresponding Wikipedia article.
Feel free to try them if they're useful for your workflow. Feedback and suggestions are welcome. Saroj (talk) 10:40, 4 August 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks, be useful if the DEFAULTSORT could be synced as well. Don't think this is exposed through Wikidata though. GrimRob (talk) 11:25, 10 August 2026 (UTC)
- I made a separate script for this: Sortkey, suggests a default sort key from the page title. Saroj (talk) 07:20, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks, tried it on a couple. Seems to work fine. Good that you can change the suggestion as well. GrimRob (talk) 12:22, 11 August 2026 (UTC)

Protection on the Main Page templates
[edit]Currently, almost all Main Page templates, except Main Page/New pages (under semi-protection), are fully protected. I would like to suggest we lower the protection of all those templates (and increase the MP new page template) to autopatroller protection. This would allow some more users to maintain those templates while remaining protected from most users because they are considered high risk. Codename Noreste (talk • contribs) 22:12, 10 August 2026 (UTC)
- I don't object as such, but is this proposal in response to a particular issue? ―Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 23:09, 10 August 2026 (UTC)
- Main Page/New pages is the only one that needs regular updates, so I agree with making that more accessible to autopatrollers and get a greater cadence for alerting users to new pages. QOTD has its own process, not sure you'd want people to interfere with that? Some of the others I can't imagine need updating very often. I know we can always rollback if anyone blunders, but might it be better to just pick the pages which realistically might be updated? GrimRob (talk) 12:13, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
- I don't think the protection level of Main Page/New pages should be increased to autopatroller protection, as it should remain accessible to all users creating new pages. For the other Main Page templates, I think the current protection levels are generally appropriate, since users can always request changes to protected templates when needed.
