- [Steven Hawley, STS 41-D pad abort, 1984] - Explanation: MECO means "Main Engine Cut-Off" and describes the final cut-off of the Space Shuttle Main Engines in orbit, which usually happens in space (at over 100 km height) and marks the last step of the ascent and the transition to weightlessness and orbit insertion. The "pad abort" happened 4 seconds prior to launch, while the Main Engines were already ignited. So "MECO" happened at the pad with absolutely no distance travelled.
