Upstream source

[edit]

@Grufo: Are you now considering this the upstream source? I saw an update at one of the sites that lead me here. —Uzume (talk) 00:23, 13 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi Uzume. Yes, for the time being, this is where everything is located. There are some major updates currently waiting to be published (here is the summary—that's a lot of stuff for a single update), which I am testing here and here (this discussion, this follow-up, and this diff should explain some of the things that the new features make possible). My roadmap also includes one more feature, but I am considering leaving it for a later update. And then there is always the newChild() issue waiting to be dealt with… :-) --Grufo (talk) 09:09, 13 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Grufo: Well, like I have told you before, I never really spent the time to completely understand this module—just parts of its code. Based upon the pushed updated I saw and this upstream, you might be interested in Synchronizer which you can use with Q122696746 and mediawikiwiki. It is not perfect as it does not track things not linked via Wikidata sitelinks like documentation, etc. but I find the tool useful. —Uzume (talk) 10:36, 13 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Uzume: That was it!! Thank you!! I remember coming across Synchronizer in the past, but I completely forgot what it was called, so I was never able to find it again and ended up updating the module manually on all Wikipedias. This will save me a lot of time! You have no idea how many times I tried to find it. --Grufo (talk) 10:42, 13 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Grufo: I am glad I could help. I have had a number of long talks with its developer, see Talk:Synchronizer for the most recent. It used to have its own Scribunto module but that was not really needed so I got Felipe to get rid of such overhead, see Module:Synchronizer, Template:Synchronizer, etc. I am not sure why you found it hard to find. It is still used considerably and you can find it linked in updates of larger Multilingual Templates and Modules. I recently pushed some updates for w:Module:Wd (and its config) and I noticed there is no entry for Latin Wikipedia. I am not sure what you guys use for Wikidata access there though a quick search did yield these: la:Modulus:Vicidata and la:Modulus:Convert/wikidata. —Uzume (talk) 11:57, 13 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Uzume: No idea why I could not find it. Probably the main reason is that the verb “synchronize” never came to mind as a possible search string :) Concerning Wikidata on lawiki, I created Modulus:Vicidata; however, I never had a real passion for databases, so I never really studied in depth how Wikidata handles its labyrinth of information. That module simply grows pragmatically according to what we need. For instance, recently I expanded the function to deal with arrays of entities. I did not even know that was a thing until someone recently created hundreds of articles on the Carmina Burana and created a template alongside them: Carmen Carminum Buranorum. Long story short, that template fetches the P921 property from Wikidata, which can contain an array of entities. Before my recent update, that template used , which, on, let's say, w:la:Doctrinae verba paucis (today's featured article), would create Clerus, ethica, disciplina ecclesiastica. Therefore, I updated the module, updated the template as well, and now it produces Clerus, Ethica, Disciplina ecclesiastica. That said, with Wikidata I never know whether there are other edge cases I have not considered (I always assume there are, and eventually I will find out). But if you want to review that module, I would be more than happy! The goal is to keep it as minimal as possible. --Grufo (talk) 13:18, 13 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
P.S. Careful if you edit it though, Modulus:Vicidata is currently used in thousands of articles. If you search for where it is used, you will have also to search for strings like insource:/_by_invoking\|vicidata/i, because some templates do use Params to invoke that module (e.g. )—I know, the limit of 99 invocations… --Grufo (talk) 13:35, 13 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Grufo: I find it comical this module was deleted from en-WP due it being perceived as too complex and yet it is apparently not too complex for simple-WP. —Uzume (talk) 13:42, 14 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Uzume: Indeed. I found that deletion rather unusual. I have never seen a mature module that was actively used by many templates, had multiple users, and had not caused any maintenance problems be deleted in that way just because someone didn't like its philosophy. Debates about programming style and design ended up carrying much more weight than I would have expected. Anyway, what's done is done. :-) P.S. About Synchronizer: I'll have to decide what to do with the Hungarian version of Params. They translated a large number of interface strings into Hungarian. With the previous two updates I could simply merge the new features into their version, but with the latest changes that is going to be considerably more difficult. I'll think about that over the next few days. --Grufo (talk) 19:54, 14 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Uzume: I just used Synchronizer. It's a very nice tool. In the end, I manually copied all the Hungarian translations into the new version, but that's risky and not sustainable, especially since I don't speak Hungarian. Next time, I'll just skip that local version. --Grufo (talk) 07:01, 16 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Grufo: You would likely do better to use Synchronizer first and then do the localization patch. Now Synchronizer says huwiki is "Unrelated" but if you did it the other way, it would say "Forked (X revisions)". I also noticed you opted to not touch idwiki...and that you were locked out of updating arzwiki and eswiki. The author of Synchronizer is big on eswiki so I am sure he could help you with that. Another thing you might consider is a params config submodule or something so the localization could be done there. Sometimes that does not do much though as when you add new features necessitating new config and now you cannot easily update a module because you are tied to an earlier config that you need to port anyway—but it is a thought. —Uzume (talk) 08:15, 16 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Uzume: Thank you for the suggestion about huwiki and the config submodule! I didn't skip idwiki; it simply won't let me edit. I always get a long error message that starts with (autotranslation): “Warning: Automated filters have identified this edit as destructive/non-constructive and therefore disallowed.” With arzwiki, the last time I contacted the admin who imported Params, they temporarily unprotected the module so I could update it, so maybe I'll try the same approach again. On the other hand, eswiki would also be nice. They have only few templates that use Params, but it's one of the few wikis where they did everything on their own, with zero templates imported from other wikis: , Epx, ACdb. --Grufo (talk) 08:30, 16 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Grufo: That sounds like another place—oh, wait that was lawiki—*wink* —Uzume (talk) 08:33, 16 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
:-D --Grufo (talk) 08:37, 16 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Uzume: The interface administrator on eswiki who imported Params hasn't been active since May. I tried to contact them recently, but without success. Is Synchronizer's author called Sophivorus? I see they're an interface administrator on eswiki as well. --Grufo (talk) 13:38, 23 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Grufo: Yes, I believe so. —Uzume (talk) 04:21, 26 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
