Note that some users may find MediaWiki software bundles a convenient alternative to manual installation.

The first part of this guide gives broad general instructions, while the last section contains a list of appendices that give more detailed installation notes for specific system configurations and other less common uses of the software.

Upgrade guide

If you are already running MediaWiki, see the Upgrade guide.

Requirements Requirements
  • Download MediaWiki (current stable version is 1.46.0)
  • Web server such as Apache or IIS
    • Local or command line access is needed for running maintenance scripts
  • PHP version 5.2.3 or later. PHP 5.3.1 is incompatible with MediaWiki due to a bug.
Due to a security issue with PHP it is strongly advised to use PHP 5.2.17+ or PHP 5.3.5+ (see here for more details).
  • Database Server
    • MySQL 4.0 or later (*)
    • or PostgreSQL 8.1 or later
      • Requires PL/pgSQL (contained in contribs)
      • Full-Text searching (Native in >=8.3, requires tsearch2 extension <=8.2)

For image thumbnailing and TeX-support, additional programs are required.

(*) – Even though it may not be officially supported yet, MariaDB, a GPL fork of the MySQL code by Monty Widenius, the founder of MySQL, is an alternative and can also be used by MediaWiki. Debian/Ubuntu repos.

Quick installation guide

For experienced users, here is the quick version of the installation instructions. Most users will want to read the more detailed version, below.

  1. Check that your system meets the minimum requirements
  1. Download MediaWiki (direct link to latest version) and extract the archive to a web-accessible folder on your server.
  2. Point your browser to the directory where MediaWiki was extracted (e.g., http://[domain]/mediawiki/index.php. If installed on a local machine, replace [domain] with localhost. If installed on a remote server, replace [domain] with your server's domain name (eg: www.myserver.com).
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

These instructions are deliberately brief. There is a lot that could go wrong, so if in doubt, you are advised to read the full instructions below.
