Thumb and pixel options have no effect when embedding images
I am running MediaWIKI 1.9.3 on IIS6, PHP 5.2.1, MySQL 4.1.22, and everything working as expected including ImageMagick.
But when I embed an image into an article and use the |thumb or |200px options with the image they have no effect. The |frame option works perfectly, as do |right, |left, etc. and the alt text options.
To confirm ImageMagick works, if I access a category that contains images, ImageMagick successfully thumbnails these automatically (when I put a typo into the $wgImageMagickConvertCommand value, this thumbnailing fails with an appropriate error), so I know this works OK.
Just can't understand why the |thumb and |200px options don't work - do these even use the ImageMagick convert application?
Can anyone help find the cause of this, or know a fix please?

I have also the same problem when I resize images like "image:learn.jpg|300px" it doesn't show any image (thumbs) and doesn't give me any error ...just an empty rectangle of the thumb size (300px) with X sign at the top left of that empty rectangle !!! .... I tried something I found in one of the forums, to commented these lines (in \wiki\includes\Image.php):
#$cmd = $wgCustomConvertCommand; #$cmd = str_replace( '%s', $src, str_replace( '%d', $dst, $cmd ) ); # Filenames #$cmd = str_replace( '%h', $height, str_replace( '%w', $width, $cmd ) ); # Size
And instead add this :

It works with them but didn't work with me!!!
- I'm sure that the converter works because when I opened the image/thumb
directory I found thumbs with the sizes I've tried on.
- I gave permission for both the IUSR_* and IWAM_* on both the Image directory
and the whole directory that contains the the "convert" ....
- and when I view the source of the page , the path of the thumb is

Upload and everything else goes. Strange is that I use a MediaWiki 1.6.5 system on the same hosting where thumbnailing works. I was not able in the last hours to find a solution even searching all the web and are now frustrated.

Similar problem for me. Environement Details:
- Windows 2003 SP2
- IIS 6.0
- PHP 5.2.1 (isapi)
- MySQL 5.0.37-community-nt
- ImageMagick 6.3.4-9-Q16-windows-dll
ImageMagick is installed in "/images/imagemagick"; (this is the location of the convert.exe command.
ImageMagick renders the images just fine, until I want to utilize the thumbnailing feature. The error I get is "error creating thumbnail:"
One thing I did notice is that if you turn ImageMagick off and let the GD library create it, then when you re-enable ImageMagick it uses the thumbnail created by GD, however it is driving me absolutely nuts, especially since the GD library doesn't deal with transparent backgrounds very well and I get black where it should be transparent.
Any ideas or help would be GREAT!!

How can i find out the most searched words on my mediawiki site?
I need to get a report of what words, and how many times a word has been used for searchs during a period of time! Is that possible?
I've been looking aroung for addons or some sort of report but no luck yet.

Spider (Swish-E or other external program) Authentication on MediaWiki
Hello -- I am attempting to use Swish-E to spider a local MediaWiki-based intranet that uses default database authentication to access its pages. I am trying to figure out a way to authenticate the spider (so it can proceed with the spider job) without having to whip up something special inside of the wiki (the installation doesn't "belong" to me). (The spider software saves cookies, btw).
The MediaWiki login page uses a POST method -- a GET-based alternative may work, but can't find any info on it.
Does anyone have any advice as to an approach?

User.php customisation
I've added some checks on user credentials to loadFromDatabase() in Users.php, but right at the start of that function, there's this check:

I'm returning at this point every time - even masquerading as different users and even at the first login after a reboot!. This variable is set further down the function, but I can't find out how it's reset - obviously I could do some dirty hacking, but I'd prefer to get a better understanding of what's going on and "do the right thing".
I'd be grateful for some enlightenment!
Searching for IP Addresses
Hi,
we use mediawiki for internal documentation. Is there a way to search for ip addresses? I know, there are lots of them, but the dot between the numbers splits up my searchstring. So, if i search for 192.168.1.1 there is found everything, what contains "192", "168" and "1". :-(
Any hints for me?

Square Bracket witin Importing File
Issue I am having is < and > in XML file being imported into a wiki. Know that they have to be shown as & lt; and & gt;, otherwise it is interpreted as being part of the XML and lost. That is fine.
The problem then is, that they are converted into < and > within the wiki text after it is imported. For most situations this is not a problem, however have encountered one where in a text mathematical formula < and > are used around a capital "B". And this is then interpreted as being the HTML code for bold, definitely not what we want.
The XML files are being generated automatically using a script, to make it fast and easy to do since there are about 70 odd pages it is generating, all with similar formats. So would be handy to sort something out so doesn't require human intervention once it is uploaded to fix the issue. Any suggestions? --Dr DBW 00:30, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
human readable URLs as an option
For non-english Wikis encoding the URLs of articles in URL encoding looks very ugly. Would be important to have an option to use and display URLs in their original encoding, or at least UTF8. You can recognize the encoding used at the client, and also, this could be available only to clients with utf8 support. I know you recognize latin1 and utf8, but please make an option to not redirect to this encoded-url page. It's very irritating that with every new generation of software (desktop, web, ...) non-us crowd is suffering from this simple problem. Just for one minute try to enable url-encoding english-only URLs on Wikipedia, and you'll see the response, and understand the need. :-)
Database error
Hello, I keep getting a database error when I try to edit a page more than once. The error can be found here: [[1]]. I don't know whether I should submit this to bugzilla or not. - I have the exact same error. I tried to run which run fine but did not remove the database error. No updates are possible on my Wiki right now.

Fix/Workaround
I found that logging on to the mysql wiki db and issueing a
delete from objectcache;

I had repeatable errors on editing the Main Page of my local (patched) mediawiki-1.8.4

after an update of my installation. I found it to be caused by the upgrade from mysql 5.0.38 to 5.0.42. Downgrading to 5.0.38 seems to have solved the issue. However, I'm still wondering why it writes on install:
Creating tables... using MySQL 4 table defs... done.
since I only have mysql 5 installed. Wiki-maniac. (Wed Jul 4 00:44:47 CEST 2007)
- The "MySQL 4" table definitions refer to the version of the schema MediaWiki is using; in this case, it's the default, backwards-compatible schema, which should work fine with MySQL 4 upwards.
- The choice of schema also affects the character set and collation in use. Under the backwards-compatible behaviour, MediaWiki will ignore whatever character set the database is using, and stores UTF-8 data regardless. This is important because the UTF-8 implementation in MySQL 4.1+ is somewhat lacking for our purposes. The newer, experimental "MySQL 5" schemas explicitly create a UTF-8 (Unicode) database and configure MediaWiki to assume it's storing UTF-8 data in a UTF-8 database. Multiple sites/domains with one mediawiki/one database?
Good day. I would like to run one database and one mediawiki installation to supply several domains/sites.
So on one domain you see layout1 and only posts/articles of category1, on project 2 you shoudl see a different layout and different content.
Is this possible with mediawiki?

Some languages are out of date
I wanted ti use Persian language in my wiki (1.10), but when I compare it with older version I saw it is same and only the MessagesEn.php file is changed and has more sections.if I want to use the MessagesFa.php , what I must do? Can I translate MessagesEn.php and rename it to MessagesFa.php? I I used a translated version of mediawiki 1.9.3 (MessagesFa.php from mediawiki 1.9.3 in that way that I described) is it act normally? in the other word, Messages are backward compatible and if some phrases didn't find in MessagesFa.php , Mediawiki use the translation that is in MessagesEn.php?
- Yes, if MediaWiki can't find the message it's looking for in the current language, it will fall back to the language specified in the message file, which is often English
- We've got, I think, a maintainer for Farsi-Persian, now, so the localisations should be more robust in MediaWiki 1.10.x and MediaWiki 1.11.x

File Extensions Problem
Hi, My problems is with File Extensions. Firstly let me say that I am not a php developer I am a C++/C/C# etc developer so I like compiled languages and a compiler much better. However I hope that I can get some help here. I've edited my wgFileExtensions[] array to add in the new office file formats pptx, xlsx, dot etc. One of the users at the company I work up loaded a pptx file format. Now every time you click on the link essentially a 404 page is generated.
Things I've tried.
1. Verified that the file existed in the database. 2. Edited the acceptable file extensions in both Default Settings and my localSettings .php 3. Reduced the name of the file, thinking there might be a name length issue. 4. Reduced the size of the file thinking there might be an issue with php post of larger files.
I am just stumped. If Anyone has any ideas please let me know.

- It might be helpful to see the corresponding lines from LocalSettings.php
- Don't ever edit includes/DefaultSettings.php, per the top of the file
- What "link" is it that you are talking about? Is this a link on the image description page, a link to the description page, or some custom link?
- I'd guess that you are using IIS. For IIS to serve up these file types you need to specify the MIME type for the file extension e.g. .pptx application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.presentationml.presentation

- Spaces in the path tend to throw web applications off. Try reinstalling Imagemagick into a directory that doesn't have spaces like C:\ImageMagick. And then modify LocalSettings.php to have the follwing lines in the section where you had the previous ImageMagick directories

ImageMagick will correctly generate the thumbnail. But when I hit it from the web site, I get the above error. I made sure that the IWAM and IUSR accounts both have full access to C:\ImageMagick\Images and C:\Wiki\mediawiki-1.10.1\images folders. Thoughts? --ThatRickGuy 20:28, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
Found the solution. C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe needs to have the IUSR (but not the IWAM) account set to Read and Execute access.

I found the following information at the help site of wikimedia:
"All pages ... ... From MediaWiki 1.5 one can also select all namespaces except a specified one. Namespace prefixes are given, but the sort key is the page name without prefix."
But i dont know what, where and how to do this. So i need your help. Where is the file? What i have to change there?

It sounds like a *.css challenge, no? Here are a few files that I've found with controls over what we see on screen:

- ...\mediawiki\skins\monobook, a directory with 29 files in it.
- Here's what I have been doing: I make copies of those files, then change their contents one line at a time, save the file, and refresh my screen cache ([Ctrl][F5] in Windows), and see if I've found the control I am after. Then I write down "this controls that" notes to myself in a reference text file. But, I've not changed much yet, so I haven't got a clue how to accomplish your goal. Gosh, it would be nice to have a real MediaWiki index of all words, features and parts, something that might include where each component is controlled, maybe entries like:

How to export multiple nested template/data?

- If it's on a Wikimedia-run wiki, have a look at Special:ExpandTemplates, which will zip through the nesting and resolve all templates, brace expansions, etc. into a blob of wiki text. If it's not on a Wikimedia wiki, but you are in a position to do so, then you might try installing the extension yourself, it's pretty nifty. robchurch | talk 19:00, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Image file permissions screw pages up!
Hello!
I recently started having problems with the display of some images on my wiki (www.cpcwiki.com). Images are uploaded ok, and if you access them directly they show (example), but when I try to insert them in a page and click 'submit' or 'preview', the system returns a blank page. Upon inspection, I found that their permissions are not set to 777 (but, rather, 644: -rw-r--r--).But even if I chmod them to 777, the pages still have this problem... I recursively chmod'ed everything under /images/ to 777, this covers only existing files.
Why would the uploaded images have permission issues? And why does the problem persist after I change the permissions?

- It doesn't look like a permission issue. 644 is correct, so changing it to 777 shouldn't change anything. More likely, it's failing to thumbnail the image, probably because it can't run the configured command (usually image magick, but there is at least one other option). -Steve Sanbeg 23:56, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

How remove the general template on Special:Userlogin ?
When user login or create account, I need to remove the normal mediawiki layout, for just keep the specific Userlogin template. In other terms, I don't want the left bar, the title, the actions, the footer, etc. I just want the login / create account box. Don't ask why... Designer guys have sometime strange ideas and I'm just an executioner.
I search in the manual, and in the code since some hours without success. Someone know how to proceed ? I don't need the exact code, I can write it myself, but I don't see where to write it and which parameter/function I must to use.

For information, or if this can be usefull for anyone, I succeed to find a solution.
In the file include/SpecialUserlogin.php
at the very end of the mainLoginForm function, I add the line :
$wgOut->setArticleBodyOnly(true);
This seems to work well. If someone have other idea or commentary, I'm still open to improvement.
I want to know why MediaWiki stops working despite no changes...

I'm hoping that someone can help me, but I also recognize that there's a lot of questions on this page and a lot of them never get answered. I've tried my best to look for the answer elsewhere on the site, but to no avail. If I've missed it, I apologize, but I would still appreciate an answer. Considering how scattered and varied the information is, you can't really hold it against me for not finding one!
So, yesterday I was happily plugging away at adding some new content to my mediawiki page. It was working splendidly. No errors or unusual behaviour whatsoever.
Today, however, when I go to access the main page, I receive this error:

So, what I would like to know is how this happened without me making any server-side changes. What I need to know is how to fix it. It seems very suspicious that I could edit and navigate the page with no problems one day, yet be completely unable to access it the next. Especially when I am the only one who even knows it exists and nobody else even has the permissions to change anything anyway!
So is anybody out there? Pleeeeaase?

in settings section of mediawiki (preferences) you can set some of your preferences. how can I change the default settings. for example how can I set search namespaces in all sections as default settings?

Any way to identify the section?
Hello... a question relating to the software. Is there a way to determine the section a template is in? Specifically, we have a template on en.wikipedia that requires different wording depending on whether it is at the top of the page or in a section. I'd like to use an "IF" condition based on section, the premise being that if the section is "0", it would use one block of text, and another if not. Thoughts? How can I include content in every new article

we are using mediawiki in our company. We have more than 3000 manually registered Users and until today 2.140.527 pageviews.
I would like to automatically insert a signature (--~~~~) and a category in every new article. Is this possible?

Help restricting access to all pages, register, create new pages
Hello i need to restrict access to all pages but main page to anon users and also restrict account creation. I've added these to my LocalSettings.php but they did not work;
- Anonymous users can't create pages
$wgGroupPermissions['*']['createpage'] = false;
- Pages anonymous (not-logged-in) users may see

- Prevent new user registrations except by sysops

I got this error on the install. The session save path is set at 777 and the directory exits. Any idea what is causing this?

CVS or SVN support for uploaded files
Hi,
are there any plans to have a file upload in a CVS or SVN. I am aware there is a versioning system for files in place, but it is not one of the two above - or am I wrong?
The reason for this request is that we are using the mediawiki software in a project scenario where we need to maintain version of files. The files can be pictures but could also be code. In particular for the code part of it an upload supporting/based on a CVS would be great since IDEs have support for these versioning systems.
Any comment is appreciated...

- How about looking at your error_log it will usually report the errors when the page is blank.
Image width limitation in articles
Hi.
I need to limit the width of images in articles. User must be able to upload really large images, but I want than these images appear never larger than 728px in article. For my need, it's not really necessary to create a thumbnail. So, I think about "just" adjust the width/height in the img tag, but.
1) I'm absolutely unable to find in which php file this tag is created.
2) It's not an elegant solution, because the visitor load a larger image than what his see. If it's possible to create and show automatically a 728px-thumbnail, it's clearly better.
Someone have idea ? Even for the simple - no so good - solution ?

Is it possible to set a default group to new accounts?
I would like to set a default group to new accounts so that we do not have to manually added users to a default group. They need to log in before they can edit pages and be a member of a specific group, and we have set up several groups so we can restrict the viewing/editing of pages. I have not found anything in the documentation that says how to do this or even if it can be done.

I tried to copy $wgLogo = "{$wgStylePath}/common/images/wiki.png" to LocalSetting.php file, and I didn't saw the photo.
At the FAQ I saw that I should look at "web server error log and adjust accordingly". Where can I find this log ?

Removing the Table of Contents from specified Pages
Is there any way to remove the table of contents from specified pages? It appears automatically when there are four or more headings. I haven't been able to find anything written about this in any of the existing literature.

I am using the most current version of MediaWiki (1.10). My wiki is set-up so that only I can create accounts for other people (new users cannot create their own accounts). I prefer to do this with the "by e-mail" button. My problem is that I would like to edit the content of this automatic email so it is more personal to my wiki. In other words, create a new template for this email. I cannot find any documentation that shows me where/how I would do this. Can you please point me in the right direction or explain how I would do this? Thanks.

When I try to edit Common.js in my own wiki, I get the following message:

possible bug in SVG rasterisation
not sure if this is a bug or not. I have uploaded an SVG to wikimedia commons at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Blank_map_of_Europe.svg
The rasterised version shown on that page has every nation shaded grey, yet there is an embedded stylesheet that specifies that various countries (defined as shapes and groups with ids) have a fill of a colour. Viewing the SVG live in firefox shows the coloured version as does opening it in Inkscape. Now I am no SVG guru, so I might have missed something that means that the SVG itself is wrong, but if the SVG is ok, then it looks like the rasterisation is failing to correctly read in all the CSS. I can change de skin, but what about the include files ?
I can change easily the skin, but it's not always sufficient. I often need to make changes in the include directory for add feature and tweak special pages... But I don't like that because all these files will be (eventually) overloaded by the next upgrade, which :
- mean a lot of time lost each 3 or 4 months
- force me to note all modifications for future modifications.
Someone have a better method ?
- Where possible, write extensions to add functionality; upgrades will not usually affect these
- If changing the core code is unavoidable, consider using diff to create a patch which can be re-applied after reviewing following an upgrade

Can't find users changes in page Special:Recentchanges
I've recently install MediaWiki 1.9 on Linux for professional use (France).
My problem : I can't see pages which have change recently in the Special:Recentchanges.
I've made many changes today and yesterday, but this page only refer to older changes (july 3). I've checked my preferences. My contribution page show me many changes i've done. I've try with another user, and whith no user (no log in) and MediaWiki Special:Recentchanges doesn't work properly.
I thought it had work before. My recent configuration changes on MediaWiki was made on july 3 (i've change visible from this date) : installation of Pear for activation of mail notification ...

Extension:CrudeProtection
Im trying to use this extension to allow certain members to view a page and keep others out. After I add the <protect>name</protect> to a page and click save, it will display the message it should when it keeps someone out, but then that page will be blank from their on. Any ideas?
How can I sync up my existing user registration and login with MediaWiki?
I've studied the database schema and it seems straight forward enough. I can just insert values into the database directly. Alternatively is there a class I can use as a wrapper to try and avoid breaking things if the MediaWiki code changes in the future (presumably the class interface will remain the same even if the specifics of the user table change for example.)
Also are there any other tables to consider when creating new users manually.
And finally how can I log the user in via my existing login script. Do I have to set a cookie or session?
Transclusion
I have just installed the latest XAMPP MW installation, which works just fine, but when I try to transclude anything outside of template space, template: gets prepended, so for example I am unable to transclude Portal:Foo/Bar in Portal:Foo, which is something routinely done on the Wikipedia sites. I have copied and pasted the contents of en:Portal:Box-header to a template, but for some unaccountable reason the mediawiki software is automatically inserting a closing /div into the template, whcih means that instead of rendering a box header, followed by text, followed by a configurable box footer en:Portal:Box-footer, it renders an emoty box, followed by the text, followed by a visible </div>. - Any ideas why this might be, please? http://mailgate.chapmancentral.co.uk/wiki/Template:Box-header for context. How do I create a link in Wiki that will point back to a file on an internal server?

- You need to copy the settings for $wgUrlProtocols from includes/DefaultSettings.php into your LocalSettings.php and add 'file:' before the ending );. (Don't forget to add a comma after 'news:'). You can then do the above. If you're using FireFox you'll also need to enable local file links. I need to create a user-specific sidebar
I need to know how to create a new sidebar that will only show when a specific user or group is signed in.
This is similar to many CMS designs where 'blocks' can be assigned to specific locations for specific users and denied to others.
I don't need a full CMS implementation, just a new 'block' of code with the menu.
Specifically, I have a sort of personal link list (all internal wiki links) that I don't want others to use.
As a distant dream/wishlist item, I would like to be able to have a button/link at the top of an article like "Link This" and allow a signed-in user to add the appropriate link to his own sidebar/block. Maybe this already exists, I'm still new to the system and working things out.

Templates and Section Editing
I have several pages which use templates within which text is entered under manually inserted section headings.

- Nope, nothing wrong at all. That is how it works. It does not exist on the page you have inserted the template on, so there is nothing to edit. What does exist, is the template, so that is why it takes you there to do the editing. --Dr DBW 06:00, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Fixed background

There's a good chance the redirect is coming from MediaWiki, in fact; if it's confused about the canonical server name, it might well redirect the client to an incorrect or invalid location.
Check the ServerName in the web server configuration; it seems to be defaulting to some sort of local host name. You might need to override this in LocalSettings.php using the $wgServer or $wgServerName variables. robchurch | talk 07:27, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Graphics extension
I'm looking for a rather unique graphics extension that most likely doesn't exist. However, I don't want to write it if it already exists. I need to produce line-art style images (building layouts per floor) for our internal wiki. Then, depending on the page, add markers, highlights, and such. So, I figure it is easiest to embed the images into the wiki. Have one page contain a text description of the floorplan (SVG-style, I assume). Then, I can include that in another page and add to it. Finally, I can include the wiki-image in a page. I know this will not be functional for photograph-type images. This is only for floorplans of the many buildings (and floors) here. So, it is basically a bunch of "draw a line from here to here" commands. If this makes sense and already exists, please point me in the correct direction. Kainaw 14:38, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

- I'll try to explain it better...
- The optimal project will allow me to enter a text file that describes all the lines on a floorplan of every floor in our office building. I'm not talking about full-color 64-bit photographs. I'm talking about black lines that outline the hallways, doors, and offices.
- Then, with those in place on the wiki-server, I want to be able to to append to them on the fly. For example, for an article on fire extinguishers, I want to be able to say "load the floorplan for floor 8" and then draw circles where the fire extinguishers are located. Finally, showing the resulting image as a jpg, gif, or png to the user.
- The advantage to this is that if a new wall is put up or an extension is added, I only need to change the floorplan once. Then, all the images that use the floorplan will be updated.

This sounds quite similar in principle to the idea of allowing users to edit SVG images through editing the actual script itself; this isn't something I see happening within the next few months, but it's a good idea, and might make it into the core, or a core-endorsed extension, over the course of the next year and a half or so, as our media support develops. robchurch | talk 16:30, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
External link is rendered strangely in IE 6.
If an external link text span a line, the rendering of a tiny icon indicating external link seems to mess up. Anyone have the same experience? Featured Article

- Couldn't you just create a new category called [[Featured Articles]] and then add a category link to each article meeting your given criteria, then provide a link somewhere to the category? You could do it more easily by creating a template which adds a banner to the top of each article with a star, or something, which contains an includeonly statement to automatically add that page to the Featured Articles category. Problem Uploading Images
I'm trying to upload images - I thought I had everything set correctly except I get the following error type whenever I try to upload an image:
Could not copy file "/tmp/phpt1xA8w" to "/home/g/o/gough_name_org_uk/wiki/images/temp/0/02/20070717211643!John_Bartholomew_Gough.gif".
Probably something very simple but please can someone help?

Safari bug or Mediawiki?
Hi, we're having trouble with page display using Safari. For some reason, Safari is rendering the Main Page and links on the side bar as "text/plain" from the content-type header. Reloading the page corrects the problem, but refreshing the Main Page each time can be a little annoying. Is there some way of forcing the correct behavior? Or is there something wrong with the source code we haven't seen?

Import old Database
My current version of media wiki is the very old 1.5.2 .
Am I able to directly install the version 1.10.1 and then import the old database from 1.5.2 ?
If its possible how can this be done?

New Non-blank page
Is it possible to create a new pre-populated page. I would like users to be able to create an article but have a number of predefined sections already in place for them to add their own text.
- I do not believe there is a setting in MediaWiki to do it, but you can go into the code and just before the textbox is sent to the user check to see if the contents are empty and, if so, change the contents to some predefined text. Kainaw 12:35, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

User-friendly extension installation/configuration
Why must LocalSettings.php be edited to install an extension? Seriously, is MediaWiki still stuck in the user-unfriendly days of Unix and DOS text-editing dorkiness? MediaWiki could learn a thing or 8 from Drupal as far as user-friendly extension (what it calls a "module") installation where, after the directory is dumped into the "modules" directory, loading the "modules", er, module shows the newly added module and allows it to be enabled and configured (though in a separate menu). MediaWiki could at least have some built-in "extension" special page that allows en-/disabling and configuring extensions without having to mess with the LocalSettings.php and other files. Even basic things like changing the wiki's name have to be done through editing that file, which is quite user-unfriendly. There's no reason more even basic MediaWiki configuration couldn't be done within its user interface. Eep² 14:19, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
- You'll be delighted to know there are plans in place to make using extensions much easier. Site configuration is done through a file in this manner because it allows us the fullest flexibility to scale configuration to thousands of wikis on multiple servers, such as is required by the Wikimedia Foundation. Memory Leak on Win2k?
I've just installed the latest version of MediaWiki on my Win2k server (please, no giggling) and was suprised to find that PHP started throwing "Fatal Error: Out of Memory" errors and delievering blank pages, not just on the Wiki site, but on all PHP pages on the server.
Now, I did some Googling around and found that a bunch of people banished this error by upping thier PHP memory_limit from 8M to 32M. This elicits nervous laughter from me, as I've had that nailed at half a GB for years now -- the hardware handles it fine. I'm running PHP 5.2.1 and the server has been faithfully serving fairly intensive PHP pages for years prior to the introduction of Wiki. Removing the MediaWiki software makes the problem vanish.
Anyone have any ideas here?

SSL and 465 port are required by Gmail. Long time after I started sending the confirmation email, no result is returned. I looked into its network connection with netstat, finding that Apache did connect to a Gmail server (such as po-in-f109.google.com:465). Then of course, timed out, and a blank page is returned.

Note: the sorting should not screw up expanded branches (subsorting for them or just keep branch all in the same row?). Also, instead of textual abbreviations for things, use icons (and for other unabbreviated things too--i.e. a clock/watch for "time", etc). The <acronym> tag should also work...(please edit this table to fix it if you know how--perhaps using CSS?)
If these things had CSS elements it would be easier to create a table of them, but most are not labelled, as far as I can tell. Problems with inserting WIKIPEDIA in frames or iframe

I have important task to make one html page with 2 frames (or 2 iframes). In first I must put PDF file, and in second I must have WIKI-page, because users of my site will compare to files and correct text in wiki-page. When I make the usual page with two frames and load it it immediatly refresh itself and only wiki-page appear. WHAT'S HAPPEN? PLEASE HELP!?!?

On the English wikipedia page Johnny Fingers the image w:Image:JX, JP & KG.jpg appears as a link rather than displaying the actual image. This is the markup used

I can't get images to appear on my wiki, I can upload just fine (I can see the image in the browser), but I can't get them
to appear in pages or thumbnails. All pictures have a mime type of "error" except when i check in the server the mime type is correct.

How to keep sans-serif font when printing?
All mediawiki pages appear sans-serif eg. like Arial. But when I print a page either the standard or printable version, the print out uses a serif font, like Times Roman. How can I stop this? I want my printed page to look like it does on the screen. 220.244.88.206 05:32, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

- Thanks - but that doesn't seem to work. I edited skins/common/commonPrint.css, the only thing mentioning font type was the line
span.texhtml { font-family: serif; } which I've tried changing to sans-serif as well as commenting it out. Neither makes any difference. I'm using Ctrl+Refresh on my page after each change. I notice in the HTML source of the printable version of the page a line <style type="text/css" media="screen,projection">/*<![CDATA[*/ @import "/wiki/skins/monobook/main.css?7"; /*]]>*/</style>

How do you open images in a new window?

MediaWiki & DB2 support
Hi,
I’ve been developing a plugin for the MediaWiki to support DB2.
1) I’ve written a PHP program that converts the database from MySQL into DB2 (it creates tables identical to the tables in MySQL database and moves the data there)
2) I found that all connection to the database is done in the Database.php.
I’m planning to use functions such as db2_connect (from PHP) as they are very similar to mysql_connect. I’ve also written my own functions using db2_connect… that have almost the same signature as mysql functions (I’ve done it in order to eliminate almost any differences between DB2 and MySQL in order to decrease number of changes in the current MediaWiki code. Basically I want to replace mysql function with function that I wrote without making any other Major changes in the MediaWiki code).
However, I’ve noticed that SQL statements in MediaWiki are build dynamically in many steps and placed in different files, which are very hard to track. And I’m not able to use MySQL statements directly as DB2 have slightly different syntax. For example it doesn’t accept a quoted integer in the ‘WHERE’ clause.
My question is there any particular structure how the SQL statements get build in the MediaWiki? I’ve tried to search the MediaWiki code, but I couldn’t find any consistency and I don’t want start guessing, because I need MediaWiki to be stable.

I am trying to make edits to my sidebar but when I go to the page I'm unable to edit it as it says it's protected. I've been looking for hours and can't find a way to unlock this page. Can someone please help??

Nothing will save
When i go on my prefrences and type in my email and my real name and press save, the page flicks and reloads, and then the two boxs are blank again, can anyone help me ?
This also appears to happen on the check boxs in the my prefrences, and i have tryed the shift + reload thing. and also seems to be the same when i try to make someone a sysop, its like everthing is just not saving.

i have configure WAMP
Apapche, php and mysql has been setted up perfectly as per the installation guide and the necessary changes has been done in the httpd.conf file and php.ini files.i have copied the mediawiki contents and pasted it inside the htdocs folder and when i try to run the file it is asking for setup wiki. File Extensions Problem with 'mm'
Hi, My problems is with File Extensions. I hope that I can get some help here.
I've edited my wgFileExtensions[] array to add in the new office file formats mm (for MindManager) etc. One of the users at the company I work up loaded a mm file format. Now every time you click Upload to upload this fileformat

Moving wiki to new server
I've moved all the wiki directories and the mysql db to the new server, when attempting to reach the page, get the following error:

Editing toolbar
I didn't get an answer to my earlier question, so reposting and hopefully making it more clear. The skin I'm using appears to have removed the editing toolbar even if it's set to appear in user preferences. I've checked the source code to see if wikibits.js is being called correctly, and it is, and to check whether the HTML/Javascript is specified for the editing toolbar, and it is. It's just not appearing. I'd like to know which part of the monobook skin governs the apperance of the toolbar so I can cross-reference it with my customised skin and then see what's missing. Where can i download a "user manual" about mediawiki
in order to edit the pages with greater theoretical knowledge, obtaining a better
performance creating and editing those pages? If this manual doesn't exist,
please do it as friendly as possible, for those of us whose have basic knowledge
in programming. It would be rather to wikipedia it be this way, in order to
expand its possibilities.

wikiversidad: Music Notation
i'm actually working on some projects in "wikiversidad"
(yes, in spanish lol) and i need the ability to create the pages in music notation
At a first glance, we have thought trying to convert the sheet music into images,
after it then upload them in commons and make a link in the page to that image.
Because the project is related to music, it is unavoidable to listen the music
score, we'd have to do exactly the same way for every music file; on the other
hand, it is neccesary for all the users (and attending to the wiki policy) that
editing the scores in the page from existing mistakes be possible... but because
of they are in an image format the users should repeat all the process over and
over. As it could be seen, this way could be easily turned into a mess. For that
reason it is necessary that a code be implemented in order to write the sheet
music directly in the page and this code also allow (just as lilypond or any
music notation software does) to listen what is written in the page. I was
reading about a language called "wikitex" or somethng like that; i tried to use
the code according to this lenguage but it didn't work. I used the code
according to lilypond especifications and nothing happened (well, it appeared as
text in the page, lol), even so it was said in the wikitex page that we cand
improve our articles by using that code. Summing up, it would be a good idea to
implement a language, a tool, a code (or whatever it be the name that the
developers give to it) that can do that functions just mentioned, this only if
it's desirable to make wikiversity (wikiversidad) a real learning project.
Another Suggestion is to have the ability to listen simultaneously to the sheet
music we are just watching in the page. It will be an enormous learning tool.

Why can't we use a single username and password in order to access to the benefits of all the wikiprojects
(wikipedia, wikiversidad,ismlp, idcl,etc), instead of creating multiple accounts? summing up, i encourage you to make this improvements in order to make the "wikiproject" grow up a lot
