== Unified categories ==

I've unified categories across language using NS:Pagename/categories subpage.  For example,

                `-transclude-> [[:Category:Manual/categories]]

Now, I'm rethinking to change the name of the unified categories to Template:Categories/NS:Pagename rather than NS:Pagename/categories.
Not sure which is more suitable.

::::: Normal categories are insterted by using <nowiki>[[Category:Category name]]</nowiki>.  This is transparent and clear and obvious to anyone who has used MediaWiki before.  The first time I spotted <nowiki>{{Categories}}</nowiki> I nearly removed it thinking it was a typo, and it took at least 5 minutes of investigation to figure out that it was intended.  This unexpected new syntax is a big barrier to editing for most users who won't have a clue what this random bit of markup means or how to use it.  How is someone supposed to add categories to a page now?  How are they supposed to find this out?  Currently, I don't really see any advantage to this method, but I see quite a few disadvantages. I am Pratik Lahoti ([[User:BPositive]]) from Pune, India. I am willing to participate in the Google Summer of Code this year. I have been accepted into the [[Google Summer of Code 2014]] and will be working on the "[[Extension:Translate/Mass migration tools|Tools for mass migration of legacy translated wiki content]]" project.

As per the project timeline, I have [[Extension:Translate/Mass migration tools/Requirements|drafted the requirements]] for this project after discussing with my mentors - Nikerabbit and Nemo_bis. It would be great if the translation admins and translators have a look at the requirements and let us know if they have any other requirements from their side.

Please mention them on the corresponding [[Extension Talk:Translate/Mass migration tools/Requirements|discussion page]]. I would like to get some feedback on the importance of requirements mentioned as optional in that page.

I need to get done with this by the next couple of days, so I would appreciate if you can give this a quick look. :)

Content of the translation snippet #5 ("<code>then please create a stub article for the English version</code>") anticorrelates seemingly to [[Template:Stub|this info]] as long as one accepts the need to mark anyhow the incomplete original articles. I suppose that someone should once:
*either disallow stubs and correct the page,
*or allow stubs and correct the page still by adding a ref to the template for marking incomplete articles,

The generated API help from <code>api.php</code> is localized!<br>

I originally thought each translation of a wiki page using this (e.g. [[Extension:TextExtracts/es]]) would have to pass a <code>uselang</code> parameter to {{tl|Api help}} telling it what language to use. This doesn't work so I filed [[phab:T89768]]. Later I realized if the user has logged in and has set Special:Preferences > Language, then the transcluded API help appears in the user's language without any localization work.

Do we know how many developers visit mediawiki.org anonymously or ''don't'' set their language preference, and view translated pages? They'll see the transcluded API help in English unless we fix this bug.  Please comment on the bug, it could save a lot of work.
