:Since the category I want to search within only has about 200 subcategories (and those subcategories contain the actual content) I might just construct an "incategory:" filter and explicitly list all those categories as part of that filter, e.g. "incategory:cat1|cat2|cat3 pizza" would, as best I understand, search for "pizza" in cat1,2 and 3.

:The help page should say OR doesn't work for parameters, just for words and phrases. (The syntax you're trying is used for the ''morelike'' search parameter, where it means parameter 1 parameter 2, etc., not OR.)  For this reason, using the incategory parameter, the search for pizza in cat1 or cat2 takes two searches.
:But <kbd>pizza AND cat1 OR pizza and cat2</kbd> should work loosely, (except where cat1 does not match a page by matching the category in the categories box at the bottom of every page)  (However when I tried to verify this, I found two instances where the search "one two" AND "three four" OR "five six" AND "seven eight" picked pages that did not match those criteria.) :I did some testing and it does seem to behave as I initially expected in that "incategory:cat1|cat2|cat3 pizza" *does* "OR" together those categories and returns all matches of "pizza" in those particular categories. The help page also says

I'm trying to start with a simple search via the API in a category that seems to have lots of content. For this example I"m using "Mathematics". When I try a search with the following curl command

:It's possible only for the endings of words. Intitle does stemming, fuzzy, and wildcards on ''the ends'' of the partial word you give. Nothing affect a search towards the beginning parts except regex, but intitle doesn't have regex.  Only insource has regex, and it doesn't search titles. :Ah, now I see what's going on. That is not what I would expect either. 
:I spoke with one of the engineers. The (section: ''Section heading'') suggestion in the first result is not a literal match. To quote, "it will highlight a section if one of the search terms is present in the section name." So the words "you", "that" and "to" are the first close-enough (as the search is not exact) results in a section heading, so it suggests that section.
:Putting your search in quotes changes to the results to be literal, and removes any section suggestion. 
:This appears to be a more complex task to solve. I created a phabricator task ([[phab:T131950|T131950]]) to track progress on this.

But it would be good to return zero results when no pages have the typo. Instead the search defaults over to the correct spelling most of the time, which can be very confusing to the user of this template. Is there a way to prevent the search from doing this? == Semantic and structured search: Wikidata + Wiki(pedia) ==

One of the reasons that the search engine tends to give bad results is because much like google it simply tries to search based on content of the articles or pagerank. 

Something that I haven't seen here and that would be an obvious win would be to do some [//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_mining Data_mining] or data from wikipedia to discover obvious connections and how related the content is.

One simple use case is searching for authors related to Shakespeare, or authors born in Shakespeare's Era. Using [[Wikidata query service]] it is possible to obtain this information and use it to enhance search or even present other useful searches that the user may want to do later based on subject similarity.

Actually even without using wikidata, it is possible to extract information from infoboxes to determine all authors in the encyclopedia born in a certain year. So to an extent this is possible with some tweaks. One approach taken by wikia (yes evil wikia :) was to develop [http://community.wikia.com/wiki/Help:Portable&#x20;Infoboxes portable infoboxes] which makes these queries easier by using for ex categories. These little tools store their structured data in the page props, making it possible to do all sorts of nifty queries see [http://dev.wikia.com/wiki/Portable_infoboxes Portable infoboxes]. :None. The regex are part Lucene and part ElasticSearch, but ultimately the regex we use are CirrusSearch implementation.

I see some mention of elasticsearch's minimum_should_match option, but I'm having trouble getting CirrusSearch to truly take advantage of the option. I'd like to be able to search for term1 term2 term3 term4 and have the search return a page containing the first 3 terms even if term4 does not exist anywhere within the page or its title. Is that possible? With the default configuration it seems that every term must exist on the page or in its title for it to show up in the results. I wasn't overly surprised by this, but after reading about and briefly testing elasticsearch's minimum_should_match option I'd like our wiki search to take advantage of it if possible. :Not possible for the end user. Maybe ''minimum_should_match'' is used internally, but for CirrusSearch help, there is only an option for OR ''between two words''.

However if you follow that link you can ask for a [[W:en;Wikipedia:Courtesy vanishing#How to request a courtesy vanishing|courtesy vanishing]] that can blank your user page and change your username. :You can search on [[d:Special:Search|Wikidata]]. There is also a script, called [[w:MediaWiki:Wdsearch.js|Wdsearch.js]], which shows Wikidata results under normal (monolingual) ones. :One often overlooked resource for identifying words is [[wikt:Wiktionary:Main_Page|English Wiktionary]], which includes not just a dictionary of English, but also a large number of bilingual English/other-language dictionaries, all rolled into one. It includes an English/Dutch dictionary, so a search for ''buizerd'' over there turns up the result you are looking for. That's my go-to tool for looking up one- or two-word phrases in an unknown language.
:We're working on a project right now to generate cross-wiki results in the same language on Wikipedia. So, from English Wikipedia you'd also see the top result from English Wiktionary, Wikibooks, Wikiquote, Wikivoyage, Wikisource, etc. In this case, that would give you the Dutch ''buizerd'' result from English Wikipedia. You can get an idea of what it's like on Italian Wikipedia, which has had their own version of it for a while. If you search for ''[https://it.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Speciale:Ricerca&search=chien chien]'' (French "dog") you get links to Italian Wiktionary results, which show that it is French for ''dog.'' You can see mockups of some of the interface options we're considering on the [[Cross-wiki Search Result Improvements/Design]] page, and comment on them, too.
:We don't quite have your cross-language international search, but we're trying to do something a little more focused with language identification (I work on it [[User:TJones (WMF)/Notes|a lot]]—look for ''TextCat'' and ''language id'' on that page if you want to nerd out with me). Right now, if a search on English Wikipedia, for example, has fewer than three results, we do language identification on it. If we identify it as something other than English, we search that Wikipedia and show any results. :Unfortunately, language detection can be difficult, especially on single words and when choosing between similar languages. Because queries in Dutch are uncommon on English Wikipedia, and because Dutch and English have a lot of similar-looking words, we don't actually consider Dutch as an option for language identification on English Wikipedia—it generates many more incorrect than correct guesses. I'm working on ways to improve the accuracy so we can include more languages in the language identification, but it'll probably never be perfect nor cover all languages.

:You'll always have navigation because then there's no scrolling down, reading through a  report, and clicking; it's  keyboard, and it's instant.  Even ''Special:Search'' has the universal search box, from where navigation should always work.

We do have some updates to the search page in the pipeline, but they have not been deployed and also do not remove the tabs for selecting namespaces.
