I was wondering what you thought of my suggestion on the [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T20493 Unify the various deletion systems] thread.

My suggestion was made in response to specific sites that I know of where [[Help:RevisionDelete|Revision]][[Manual:RevisionDelete|Delete]] is not generally available to local Administrators, as it is generally reserved only for TOU violating issues.

And in response to my belief that there ought to be an extension to the [[Help:Deletion and undeletion|traditional]] [[Manual:Page deletion|deletion]] system allowing for individual or multiple revisions to be deleted and moved to the archive table, as opposed to being limited to deleting all revisions and then [[Manual:Page restoration|restoring]] the wanted revisions. If such an ability were to exist, I would imagine it sharing the same pages as the traditional deletion ability, via ?action=delete.

I understand your point. In my experience in the Wiki sphere "later" more often than not means never. I'm trying to get some years old tasks solved that fell victim of "later". However, that's not how I work. Priority means there is sequence, but very little gaps between the steps. I don't have the comfort of a "no consensus now" solution, that's a failure in a for-profit setting.

"Follow-up." I haven't heard many people use this word around. I see this as cultural issue originating from the wiki model. There's something to be learned about finishing what we started.

We have different practices and focus. I never remove a hashbang, as it is the equivalent of the magic number / type specifiers at the start of files. For this reason as I've said I don't endorse removing it, it's your decision and responsibility.

Anyway, thank you for finishing and merging this patch. I appreciate the quick response this time, this is how I imagined you would do your cleanup if you find it important.

Thank you for the explanation of the "technical debt" issue you see with leaving the hashbang as it was.
 I'm sure the CI build - right after said contributor submitted the patch - would fail to run the php script with sh and the contributor would need to fix package.json in the second patch set already. I think such fixes are normal and usual as many tests only run in CI, therefore I don't find that a problem in any sense, nor a debt. This is the reason why I don't share your concern. I hope this makes my point of view understandable.

Unfortunately, I don't experience the "great" part. In my experience volunteer effort is handled in a counter-productive way, often times unappreciated and sometimes even disrespectfully. The opposite that I usually experience while contributing to open-source.

I think this fundamentally misinterprets my modus operandi. I do significantly more cleanup than many of the developers I have met and observed their work. In this case there was a disagreement of what should be cleaned up and the importance of it.

If you observe my contributions you might notice that I prompty apply all feedback and also do extensive research of discussions going back years to find out what the purposes and plans were. Please recall when I've cited you from years ago in another task. You won't meet many contributors, who does such extensive research to find all the requirements for a solution. I hope you appreciate that. I don't have bad feelings about your comment, I reckon I wasn't either as nice to you as you are usually.

I'm sorry if my comment could be misunderstood, I'll try to explain better. This is not an issue with the tools. If you visit a merged patch that wasn't rebased on HEAD, you'll see something similar to:

Can you tell in a blink:
- who made the patch?
- with what reason?
- where is the commit comment?

If you have a good git gui - I use Fork (available on Mac, highly suggested ;-) and GitExt - you can step through the commits with one keypress and read the commit message, thus gain an understanding about what's going on in a few seconds. Very efficient.

But not with patches that read only: 'Merged "some patch title"' by a bot.
I do more and deeper research in the git history than people usually do, therefore I understand this did not come up as a pressing issue.
However, I ask you to understand this issue and think about it on a relaxed day.

This means it offers various benefits whilst also therefore being a recognised concept that most if not all Git interfaces can hide or skip when appropriate. For example, <code>git blame</code> and <code>git log ./directory/file</code> operations generally ignore merge commits by default, automatically. The same applies to GitHub's versions of these as well (file history and file blame).

I wonder how that relates to this issue for you. I also wonder how you use Git if you believe I use it "differently". Different from what and in what way?

The problem in this case is not git blame and history continuity, but the overwhelming noise that merge commits generate by 1) missing the relevant information from the original commit 2) creating 10-20 parallel branches (in the very active core repo) just for individual commits that's redundant (the exact duplicate except for the commit message) with the merge commit. This is what I described as rainbow-colored spaghetti that you can see in the screenshot. Without merge commits (with commits rebased on HEAD before merge) that would be a single line of consecutive commits without duplication. I think there's no need to further explain how simpler that would be to comprehend and handle for all developers.

I would like to report a bug in RTRC. At the moment, atleast for me, translations are not visible in RTRC. From what I gather from the DevConsole it seems to fail because a header is missing (see below). I think that might be because the domain changed from tools.wmflabs.org/intuition to intuition.toolforge.org

Hello Krinkle. Since you are an active MediaWiki admin who you speak Dutch, I am writing to you. Also, since I know you from Meta, it isn't difficult to find an user who speaks Dutch. {{ping|Baris6161TURK}}, this user translates the messages for different languages here, on Meta, Wikidata, Translatewiki etc. According to the different accounts of this user, I will say that his native language may be Turkish, but even the Turkish messages he wrote on Translatewiki and Turkish Wikipedia were corrupted. At the beginning of 2020, we (users of Turkish Wikipedia) had determined that these were machine translations. And because the translations were unfortunately wrong, different users on Turkish Wikipedia tried to reverted translations from different projects. I think these are still machine translations, as he is making translations for many languages in the world. I haven't checked the translations as often as before, but the user says he speaks Dutch. == Problem with Varnish caching with Hitch ==

I'm using Varnish caching with Hitch for SSL on my wiki. I have finished setting up the wiki itself (Nginx) (8081) which is behind Varnish (8443) which is behind Hitch (443). I tried to access my site with SSL, but it redirects me directly to port 8081. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? I use the aaPanel control panel, so if I generate a SSL certificate there, it will automatically apply it to my port 8081 site, and Varnish doesn't support SSL. So I generated a ZeroSSL certificate and placed it in <code>/etc/cert/cert.pem</code>.

Cyrillic renders correctly in MediaWiki Sidebar, but Cyrillic is encoded in articles(titles).

We have a wiki running on a vm, but this VM got corrupted so we can't run it anymore. We do have access to the files however. Is there a way to get the database when the VM is mounted? I have entries that are a person's name. I've flagged all of these for a specific category and use their last name as a sort key. This works great for keeping all the Smith's under the "S" subheading.

However, is there a way to indicate how each entry should be displayed on the category page?

(Each file conveniently starts with the first word of the appropriate cat, so with a couple runs I should be able to cat them all properly.)

:I think maybe a timestamp is missing a digit and its interpreting it as a unix timestamp instead.
:Normal timestamps are 14 digits in YYYYMMDDHHMMSS.
:for the page in question, you could check in db what is the page_latest foeld for that page, which gives you a revision id. So computers don't know if the parenthesis go with the hebrew or the english text.

One way to fix: add &lrm; immediately after the parenthisis. This is an invisible character called a LEFT-TO-RIGHT MARK that looks like an english character in terms of directionality. If () is surrounded by "english" characters (including &lrm;) on both sides they should behave like english parenthesis

I just created my MediaWiki website 2 days ago. I'm used to WordPress websites and have experience with PHP and SEO but the MediaWiki stuff is somewhat new to me. My website is working perfectly, I'm using Google Analytics with no issues and I ran a bunch of OnPage SEO reports which say my website is fully working.

However, I added my MediaWiki website in Google Search Console and in URL inspection tool, when I ask Google Search Console to index my website, they refuse indexation based on results in the real time test. In this real time results my site doesn't even get crawled. Also, I have a fully working sitemap.xml file which I added with AutoSitemap extension for MediaWiki. My XML sitemap is getting indexed by some other bunch of 3rd party tools around the internet, but Google can't recognize the file in Search Console.

== Can't Edit Main Page after Deleting Revisions ==

Is there a way to overcome the following error?

It prevents the user from editing the Main page.

Said user is a teacher in our network who has been using MediaWiki since 2009 to get learners to create a knowledge base. This semester, a student pointed out that it was possible to use page history to access pages from previous years. In this case, that'd be a strategy to cheat in the assignment.

One solution found was to delete revisions.

This was done directly in the database. And it was working... until the user deleted revisions for the Main page.

Now, the Main page says that revision number NNNN doesn't exist and that it should be solved in the deletion log... which is empty.

Attempting to edit the Main page produces the aforementioned exception (which is apparently a “Sanity check for bug 37225”).

Adding and editing other pages still works.

The database backup would be difficult to retrieve.

What's the best course of action, at this point? Is there a way to create a new Main page? Creating a blank revision?

:Generally speaking,bad things happen when you delete the most recent revision of a page (you should first make a new revision without the info and delete the old one).

If you actually deleted the whole row, you could try putting it back, or just delete the whole page entirely and recreate it. :Of course, you're right, the instructions didn't talk about the db. The teacher and a ped counsellor were already using the db to delete pages in bulk. I do realize it wasn't the proper approach. It's the one which was most compatible with existing practice.

:We all went to the `revision` table and tested with a single revision, then with revisions for the same page. Once we checked that it had the desired result, we set about doing the same for all the other unwanted revisions. If memory serves, there were 17k of them.
:With the `revision` table set to 250 rows, we'd select all rows, unselect the initial and most recent revisions, and click delete. The teacher finished that process.

Because it was going to cost me so much to continue hosting it there I moved to Hostinger and got them to transfer the site. However after transfer there was no content on the pages. The advice is to upgrade which I attempted to do so. However when I upgraded I got the message that the wiki couldn't access the database. :Sounds rough. Make sure you keep good backups. Keep in mind you'll run into trouble with different versions of mediawiki, mysql, and php.
:I think your best bet is to do gradual upgrades until you get to a Mediawiki version that supports php7.1. Then do a dump and a fresh install on the new server. The problem is that when respondents click on the link, a blank screen appears, it is random, in some cases it happens yes and in others it does not. It is also that the password is incorrect although it is not, refreshing the page loads correctly.

When I access my domain by simply entering <code>domain.com</code> in the URL I get taken to my wiki and the URL looks like <code>domain.com/wiki/</code>. The main page title is not shown in the URL unless I enter it manually <code>domain.com/wiki/Main_Page_Title</code> Both ways work but I would like to show the main page title at all times, even when <code>$wgUseFileCache</code> is enabled. :Your wget (or something that it relies on) is outdated. Wikimedia uses letsencrypt certificates and the root for those kinds of certificates recently expired. Some OSes and some software on those OSes that have not been updated in the last half year might not be able to connect for that reason. == Wanted Pages ghost entries ==

In our Wiki, there are several instances in the Wanted Pages section where it claims a group of articles link back to a deleted article, despite all links being purged from said pages.

Example would be that there was once a page named "The Fairy's Wing". Mediawiki claims that there is a hyperlink on 21 pages, but none of them even have those three words.

I believe there's a mechanism I still don't understand; There should be no possibility for a normal user to register right now and I don't see possibility any in my wiki as there is no "register" in the special pages or anywhere else in the wiki, the only thing someone should be able to do is to request an account because I installed the addon ''[[Extension:ConfirmAccount|Confirm User Accounts]].''

Any help would be highly appreciated.

When I try and set user rights for Testuser at mytest1_enwiki it gives a database error despit the database existing.

:Opcache is a different type of cache than object caching. The old apc extension did both. Opcache-ing happens automatically. The wgMainCacheType config only controls object caching which isnt provided by the opcache extension.

:I think the changing of the pages is done via the job queue, rather than instantaneously.

We tried to add users right to delete pages in mediawiki, but for some reason the syntax we use adds new group, 'Users' to mediawiki, instead of adding this delete right for all users.

Any idea why its not working as supposed?

I am trying to convert an older version of mediawiki from HTTP to HTTPS access ONLY. I want to '''completely''' disable HTTP access. Even if the user tries to connect using HTTP, I want them to '''automatically''' move over to HTTPS access.

:Its likely the page is in parser cache. Any edit (even just changing a space) to LocalSettings.php clears parser cache.

I have tried not setting $wgInternalServer or setting $wgInternalServer to 127.0.0.1:6081 but the symptoms still persist. I was aware of the existence of https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T264735.

My site is running MediaWiki version 1.36, which is higher than version 1.35, where T264735 starts to occur. Wikipedia and bullbapedia in a similar environment to my site (cloudflare cdn and varnish and MediaWiki version 1.35 or higher are used. However, this is presumed to use the Apache web server), despite using MediaWiki 1.35 or higher, my site and Otherwise, the purge seems to work fine.

I tried to run an update but doesn't solve, even regenerating the localsettings file.

On the same server a fresh install works fine.

:yes, I updated both with the same package 1.35.3, I am on a shared linux server, so I have to upload the unpacked mediawiki.
:I can say that tar.gz package has duplicate inside the package, unpacking windows asks to overwrite files (even on filter folder, so seems related), and Zip package doesn't, so I am using that now.

:Using the Zip everything goes right and Recent changes filter is working.
:I figured that on tar.gz package there are duplicate, for example \resources\src\mediawiki.rcfilters\styles\ has 2 files named mw.rcfilters.ui.FilterTagMultiselectWidget
:Unpacking I had more then one alert to overwrite.

== Position of Interlanguage links in the Sidebar not customizable in MW1.35 ? ==

I use extensions Interwiki and Interlanguages. I used to put the interlanguage links at the top the Sidebar by adding "* LANGUAGES" at the beginning of Mediawiki:Sidebar.

I desire to transfer all source codes in MediaWiki, to GitHub and to just pull them from their remote location in MediaWiki by a link (MediaWiki will present the source code as part of the output to the enduser but really in the MediaWiki source code all that there would be, is just a link to the relevant page in GitHub, likely to the raw version of the file).
