== Announcing ‘Map Improvements 2018’ ==

Over the next four months, the WMF Collaboration team will be making improvements to mapping software ([[Extension:Kartographer|Kartographer]]) and related functions. The team’s engagement with maps was prompted in part by the overwhelming support the maps community gave the 2017 Community Wishlist proposal for [[metawiki:2017_Community_Wishlist_Survey/Miscellaneous/Kartographer_improvements|Kartographer Improvements]]. The project, which we’re calling [[Map improvements 2018|Map Improvements 2018]], is currently in its very early research and planning stages. It has a limited term and is scheduled to conclude at the end of June.

The immediate goals of the Map Improvements project are:
* To ensure that Kartographer and the associated maps technology stack are stable and can be easily maintained as maps gain a wider audience.

* To accomplish the two “main wishes” named in the Community Wishlist proposal, along with as many of the other wishes as are possible in the time provided. The main wishes are [[phab:T112948|T112948]], “All map location names should be shown in the user's language” (an extremely challenging but crucial job), and [[phab:T180907|T180907]], “Add zoom level 19.”
Goals that relate to extending maps to a wider audience—such as bringing mapframe functionality to English Wikipedia (as [[:en:Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)/Archive_159#Should_we_ask_for_mapframe_to_be_turned_on?|requested by RfC]]) and making sure that mapframe works properly on wikis that use Flagged Revisions—are also under serious consideration.

Please visit the [[Map improvements 2018|project page on MediaWiki.org]] to learn more and share your ideas and questions. [[User:JMatazzoni (WMF)|JMatazzoni (WMF)]] ([[User talk:JMatazzoni (WMF)|talk]]) 22:26, 26 February 2018 (UTC)
== How to get mapframe enabled on a small wikipedia. ==

Hi

How does one get this mapframe feature enabled on a small wikipedia.

Said wikipedia has no active community.

Thanks. [[Special:Contributions/86.186.68.10|86.186.68.10]] ([[User talk:86.186.68.10|talk]]) 18:46, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
:You'e in luck. As part of the Collaboration Team's engagement with maps—[[Map improvements 2018|read about it on the project page]]—we're thinking now that it makes sense to release mapframe on all Wikipedias (except those that use Flagged Revisions, which causes problems with mapframe).
:I was just in the middle of writing up a consultation, which we'll be posting on as many wikis as we can get translations for. But in general, to answer your question, you shouldn't need to do anything. This feature will be coming to you and everyone else in late April or early May. Wikis that don't want it should leave a note on the [[Talk:Map improvements 2018|project talk page]], and we will exclude them from the rollout. Cheers! == An update on map internationalization ==

This is to let you know that Collaboration Team is planning to release map internationalization next week for testing on testwiki. When it’s ready, we’ll post a note to let you know.

Meanwhile, you might like to check out the detailed post I added last night to the Map Improvements 2018 project page: [[mw:Map_improvements_2018#April_18,_2018,_Special_Update_on_Map_Internationalization|'''Special Update on Map Internationalization''']]. It includes a lot of information on the feature status, how the it will work, how we imagine it might be useful, what the known limitations are, etc. . I’m looking forward to getting your input on this challenging but important feature; the best place to leave your ideas and questions is on the [[mw:Talk:Map_improvements_2018|project talk page]]. [[User:JMatazzoni (WMF)|JMatazzoni (WMF)]] ([[User talk:JMatazzoni (WMF)|talk]]) 22:40, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

== Maps in the language of your choice— try it out now on testwiki ==

You can now display maps in languages of your choice on testwiki. I made two pages to demonstrate the new features, on [[testwiki:Map_internationalization_examples|testwiki]] and [[test2wiki:Map_internationalization_examples|testwiki2]] (embedded maps on test2 are dynamic; those on test are static until you click to pop up an enlargement).

By default, internationalized maps display in the language of the wiki (which is English for the testwikis). So to experiment with these features, you’ll want to use the two new mapframe parameters we’ve added. Just insert them into your mapframe code.

* '''lang=”xx”''' Shows map labels in the language you specify with the short language codes used for each wiki.
* '''lang=“local”''' Shows map labels in the languages of the territory mapped (essentially opting out of internationalization).

Right now, internationalization works only with mapframe, not maplink (which should be working some time next week). You can read more about this new feature and how to use it on the [[Map improvements 2018#Project Updates|Map Improvements 2018 project page, under Updates]]. Our plan is to wait a week or two and assess user comments about the feature. At that point, we’ll decide whether to move forward with a general release or keep making fixes.

So please try the new features out and leave feedback on the [[Talk:Map improvements 2018|Map Improvements 2018 talk page]]. We’re listening! [[User:JMatazzoni (WMF)|JMatazzoni (WMF)]] ([[User talk:JMatazzoni (WMF)|talk]]) 21:19, 25 April 2018 (UTC)

== Mapframe maps now work on English Wikipedia ==

English Wikipedians can now use the mapframe function to embed maps on right on a page. Mapframe was requested by the English community [[:en:Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)/Archive_159#Should_we_ask_for_mapframe_to_be_turned_on?|via RfC last year]] and the request was [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)/Archive_164#Turn_on_mapframe?_We%E2%80%99re_ready_if_you_are reconfirmed this spring]. If you you’re new to mapframe, this [[Help:Extension:Kartographer|Kartographer help page]] shows how to use it.

Expect more significant new features in the coming weeks, with the implementation of the long-awaited [[Map improvements 2018#April 18, 2018, Special Update on Map Internationalization|map internationalization features]]. After internationalization, maps will display in the content language of the wiki they’re published on. Until then, they will continue to display in the language of the territory mapped. (You can experiment with internationalized maps on testwiki now—here’s a [[test2wiki:Map_internationalization_examples|page of examples]].)

These features are brought to you as part of the [[Map improvements 2018|Map Improvements 2018]] project. Please try mapframe out on English Wikipedia and let us know what you think on the [[Talk:Map improvements 2018|project talk page]]. We’re listening. == Pass template parameters to maplink and mapframe? ==

It seems that
<nowiki><mapframe width="300" height="300" zoom="12" latitude="{{{lat|0}}}" longitude="{{{long|0}}}" text="{{{text|}}}" /></nowiki>
is not possible.

Allowing template parameters in maplink and mapframe parameters and json content will make it easier for editors to include them in templates.

Using [[:en:Module:Mapframe|Module:Mapframe]] is creating complexity with many nested templates, not really liked in many small projects as it reduces the bus factor. [[User:Geraki|Geraki]] ([[User talk:Geraki|talk]]) 06:04, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
:Use <nowiki>{{#tag:maplink</nowiki> and a list of parameters, each preceded by | (and without quotation marks). Example [[:voy:ru:Template:Geo|here]]. --[[User:Atsirlin|Atsirlin]] ([[User talk:Atsirlin|talk]]) 07:20, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
:Thanks [[User:Geraki|Geraki]] ([[User talk:Geraki|talk]]) 07:30, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
:<nowiki>This method above does work well. To go another step further I use the {{#tag:mapframe or {{#tag:maplink in a single template that calls a Module with list of parameters - the template applies default values for this Module and the Module provides some checking and other defaults returning code needed for a Mapframe or Maplink. This particular module can also draw different shapes (such as circles, pointers, arrows, triangles, stars etc.) and place them on a map. The parameters allow for the user to be able to provide many of the arguments such as line thickness - color - maki icon names for points etc. for Kartographer. One can find a Wikidata ID and an article exists in the wiki you are working on that has the inormation you are looking for - that particular ID can be looked up and used as well. Best wishes...</nowiki> [[User:Matroc|Matroc]] ([[User talk:Matroc|talk]]) 18:01, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
:<s>OK, I tried but I failed: how do I pass json data to the tag?</s>
:<s>[[User:Geraki/Sandbox]]</s>
:<s>I think I did what I saw in the modules.</s> [[User:Geraki|Geraki]] ([[User talk:Geraki|talk]]) 06:57, 8 May 2018 (UTC)

Hoi, is it possible to use Wikidata labels for different languages ? [[User:GerardM|GerardM]] ([[User talk:GerardM|talk]]) 08:52, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
== Incorporate "group" and "show" parameters ==

# Wikivoyage has group and show parameters which I believer should be incorporated in mapframe and maplink for all. If group is added avoid somehow group names such as: Group: {"type":"ExternalData","service":"geoline","url":"<nowiki>https://maps.wikimedia.org/geoline?getgeojson=1&ids=Q55</nowiki><nowiki>","properties":{"fill":"#555555","fill-opacity":0.5,"stroke":"#000000","stroke-width":1,"stroke-opacity":1,"title":""}}? Upon examination it appears to me that Kartographer extension has been changed in early May and Wikivoyage maps are now displaying the ugly group name as shown above in the info box for lack of a better name. In addition, these 2 parameters allow some extra flexibility as well when creating maplinks and markers. At one point, Wikidata ID(s) were also shown in legend of a map.</nowiki>
# The small information box found on Wikivoyage maps (top left) should be also be included on maps - lists groups etc. This allowed users to select or deselect elements for display. Hopefully this feature will not disappear.
# Maplink does not appear to work correctly if used as a marker. -- Can see subtle differences is you look at my user page -- and user page on meta. Select link and pop up map does not show External data or drawn shape whereas user page on meta does. [[User:Matroc|Matroc]] ([[User talk:Matroc|talk]]) 03:50, 8 May 2018 (UTC)
:<nowiki>----</nowiki> Add comment
:Wikivoyage uses the group and show parameters... This allows for multiple mapframes on an article page. Using these parameters allows to display selections (or all groups) on different mapframes. When used in a maplink - these can be displayed on a mapframe using group and show. If the maplink is used as a marker one just doesn't go to a position on a blank popup map but rather a popup map with other points etc. being displayed as well. Maplinks can be placed on a page but hidden from actual page display by using text="" class="no-icon". This type of maplink could be a point or polygon etc. belonging to a particular group and displayed in either a mapframe or then popup map is displayed.
:<nowiki>This would provide for some diversity in maps. Just a thought! -- ~</nowiki> [[User:Matroc|Matroc]] ([[User talk:Matroc|talk]]) 04:41, 5 July 2018 (UTC)

== Map internationalization launched everywhere—and embedded maps now live on 276 Wikipedias ==

As of today, interactive (Kartographer) maps no longer display in the language of the territory mapped; instead, you’ll read them in the content language of the wiki where they appear—or in the language their authors specify (subject to availability of multilingual data). In addition, mapframe, the feature that automatically embeds dynamic maps right on a wiki page, is now live on most Wikipedias that lacked the feature. (Not included in the mapframe launch are [[phab:T191583|nine Wikipedias]] that use the stricter version of Flagged Revisions).

If you you’re new to mapframe, this [[MW:Help:Extension:Kartographer|Kartographer help page]] shows how to get started putting dynamic maps on your pages. If you’d like to read more about map internationalization: this [[MW:Map improvements 2018#April 18, 2018, Special Update on Map Internationalization|Special Update]] explains the feature and its limitations; [[MW:Map improvements 2018#April 25, 2018, You can now try out internationalization (on testwiki)|this post]] and [[MW:Map improvements 2018#April 26, 2018: OSM name data quirks and the uses of lang=“local”|this one]] describe the uses of the new parameter, lang=”xx”, which lets you specify a map’s language. And [[test2wiki:Map_internationalization_examples#East_Asia,_without_internationalization_(using_lang="local")|here are some example maps]], to illustrate the new capabilities.

These features could not have been created without the generous programming contributions and advice of map-loving volunteers, including {{u|Yurik}}, {{u|framawiki}}, {{u|Naveenpf}}, {{u|TheDJ}}, {{u|Milu92}}, {{u|Atsirlin}}, {{u|Evad37}}, {{u|Pigsonthewing}}, {{u|Mike Peel}}, {{u|eranroz}}, {{u|Gareth}} and {{u|Abbe98}}. My apologies to anyone I’ve missed.

The Collaboration team's [[MW:Map_improvements_2018|Map Improvements 2018]] project wraps up at the end of June, so please give internationalized maps and mapframe a try soon and give us your feedback on the [[MW:Talk:Map improvements 2018|project talk page]]. :There isn't, because the lang parameter defaults to the page language. Could you tell me what your use case is, though? It sounds like maybe page language should be (or is) different in that situation. :{{FlowMention|atsirlin}} Thanks for the comment. The quick answer is "No, but" ;) There's no real easy way of doing this right now, but there might be mitigating circumstances we can work around depending on your use case.
:Can you explain more about your need? What is this for? Is this for a page that has translations, or general article? If you give us more details, we might be able to see how to help better.
:@[[User:Roan Kattouw (WMF)|<bdi>Roan Kattouw (WMF)</bdi>]], @[[User:Mooeypoo|Mooeypoo]], at Wikivoyage we have one mapframe in the beginning of the article followed by multiple maplinks for individual objects (places of interest). Take [[:voy:ru:Шанхай|this page]] as an example. The map icon at the beginning of the page is a mapframe set to lang=en, so it shows English street names, which is good. Then the red boxes 1-5 are individual objects defined by the maplink. If I click on them, I still see the map in Chinese, because the lang parameter has not been defined (and no Russian labels are available). My question is: how can I define lang= for all these maplinks (on a given page) globally? I don't really want to write lange=en every time, because a typical Wikivoyage article has between 30 and 100+ such maplinks.
:PS. Another solution I can think of is changing language fallback scheme for a given wiki. In other words, define that Russian Wikivoyage will always choose the languages in the following sequence: language given by the lang= parameter --> Russian (language of the wiki) --> English --> local. This should solve most if not all issues we have. --[[User:Atsirlin|Atsirlin]] ([[User talk:Atsirlin|talk]]) 19:42, 10 May 2018 (UTC)
:Right now we don't have a way to define fallbacks on a per-wiki basis, only on a per-language basis. So we can set the fallback for Russian to English, but there are two problems with that. One is that this would affect all other Russian-language wikis, not just Russian Wikivoyage.
:The other is that some place name labels in OpenStreetMap have a "local" name but no Russian name, even if the local name is in Russian. In that situation our software thinks there is no Russian name, and it might display an English name for a place in Russia. There's a proposal to fix that in the OSM data, but that will be a slow process and the OSM community hasn't yet agreed on how to handle it, so for now we've been telling people to fix these cases one by one as they spot them. Because of this issue, we are being careful with fallbacks in the meantime, because we don't want to show English names for places in Russia to Russian-speaking users.
:So we can add a fallback to English if there is community consensus for it, but we want people to be aware of the issue with English names, and to be ready to fix those in OSM. Then there's the issue that this affects all wikis that speak the same language, which we haven't given much thought to yet. {{FlowMention|CKoerner (WMF)}}, what are your thoughts on that? == Should your language change its map language fallbacks? ==

Since we launched map internationalization [[Map improvements 2018#May 9, 2018: Map internationalization launched everywhere—and embedded maps now live on 276 Wikipedias|earlier this week]], a number of users have asked about the map language-fallback schemes and how communities can change their fallbacks (e.g., [[Topic:Ubzgfi8j4bdsqe9p|this exchange]]).

In response, I added a post today to the Map Improvements project page that [[Map improvements 2018#May 11, 2018: Should your wiki change its map fallback language?|goes into detail about map language fallbacks]]. It explains how to request a change and gives an example of why some less widely translated languages, at least, might want to consider adding to their fallbacks.
== Map jumps continents between Preview and Save ==

I'm having a problem displaying a map generated by a <mapframe> which links to an [[w:OpenStreetMap|OSM]] map via a wikidata id.

I created a Talk subpage at [[w:Talk:Anatolia/Maps]] to use as an illustration of a message I was going to add at the Rfc going on at [[w:Talk:Anatolia]]. This subpage has four maps using the Extension. All four maps show images of Anatolia (Turkey), with slightly varying zooms (4 or 5) and different aspect ratios. The first three are all simple, straight <mapframe> type maps, but the fourth one is a <mapframe> which links to an [[w:OpenStreetMap|OSM]] map that has a wikidata property, and points to wikidata's Central Anatolia item. This fourth map is not displaying correctly—most of the time—but sometimes it does.

The first three always display correctly. However the fourth one which links to a Central Anatolia map created at [[w:OpenStreetMap]] ([https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/2094194#map=6/38.178/33.069 here]) and is linked through the OSM wikidata property Q155526, and links to "Cenral Anatolia Region" as [[d:Q155526]] is acting flakey.

The first three maps all look fine, both in Preview, and after Saving. However, two funny things are going on with the fourth map, that links through OSM and Wikidata:

# I usually have to hit "Preview" button twice or more, in order to visualize it. The first time, I usually just get a gray rectangle for the fourth one (the other three above it are always fine).
# After I hit "Publish", the fourth map displays, but it's no longer of Anatolia region (Turkey) anymore, instead, it shows a section of northern Africa centered on Algeria, and the containing box is twice as tall as it was.

If you look at the 4th map by viewing the page [[w:Talk:Anatolia/Maps]], that's probably what you will see now, i.e. Algeria. But if you edit the page, and hit the "Show Preview" button a sufficient number of times, it will probably show Algeria several times in a row in Preview, and then at some point it will jump back to showing a map that looks just like the top one of Anatolia, except that the central portion will be shaded, matching the OSM map showing Central Anatolia shaded. (The last time I tried this, I had to give up and Cancel out once, then try again and "Preview" seven times before it "jumped" back to Anatolia, and showing the shaded border created by the OSM map.)

What is going on here? Why is it jumping back to Antatolia in Preview, but only rarely, and why, when I save the page, does it always show Algeria? (Please {{tl|Ping}}<nowiki> me upon reply.) ~~~~ (hand stamped: May 12, 2018, 09:00 (UTC) ) </nowiki> [[User:Mathglot|Mathglot]] ([[User talk:Mathglot|talk]]) 08:32, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
:{{ping|Evad37}} Thanks. So, if I explicitly add the lat/long and zoom level in the <mapframe> tag, it should work? :That's strange, I could've sworn that all the floated maps ([[w:Talk:Anatolia/Maps]]) were draggable and zoomable, but now they're not, unless you full-screen them first. == simpler mapframe syntax (as a special namespace/interwiki prefix) ==
{{Flow summary|{{Tracked|T198834}}}}

Is it possible to support mapframes using a syntax similar to images. Compare:
<nowiki>[[File:Example en.svg|frame|right|200x200px]]</nowiki>
and
<nowiki><mapframe width="200" height="200" zoom="13" longitude="-122.3995399" latitude="37.8103264" align="right">{optional SPARQL query}</mapframe></nowiki>
Why not just:
<nowiki>[[Mapframe:-122.3995399/37.8103264/13|{optional SPARQL query}|frame|right|200x200px]]</nowiki>

This allows reusing the syntax of images, and easy replacement, without the overlong XML-like syntax, just need to replace "File:name" by "Mapframe:x/y/z". This uses the common notation "x/y/z" used with OSM rendering tools or in URLs, without needing to name paramters, as these 3 values are always required (or possibly the missing "/z" can also take a default value such as "/13", suitable for frequent use to locate cities in their district and basic roads).

(we could still add other options with "*=*" parameters, like in images, such as a capotion, or alt-text, or parameters for adding/removing optional navigation buttons, or specifying a lang=* parameter if we want a precise language or its fallbacks). That wiki extension would also support fallback rendering as a single image thumbnail (e.g. using preferences, or browser capabilities if they can't use javascript), by adding a new media type plugin to the thumbail generator.

Like images, there should be coherent default sizes also matching user preferences. This would make replacing static images by mapframes more easily (warning! we should have the same kind of decorations with identical same metrics for the framing). Text-only rendering would render the caption, the map could then be made partly accessible with the description.

As well:
<nowiki>[[:Mapframe:-122.3995399/37.8103264/13|{optional SPARQL query}|inline text]]</nowiki>

Would only render a link, going to a new page with a full screen map browser, optionally with additional sidebar or metadata and info (this uses the common notation "x/y/z" used with OSM rendering tools or in URLs, without needing to name parameters, as these 3 values are always required, so it's easy to copy-paste the URL part from any OSM renderer webpage).

With a prefered language on the map, we can also use the common language code prefix just after "mapframe:" and before coordinates.
<nowiki>[[Mapframe:fr:-122.3995399/37.8103264/13|{optional SPARQL query}|frame|right|200x200px|alt=alt text|caption]]</nowiki>
<nowiki>[[:Mapframe:fr:-122.3995399/37.8103264/13|{optional SPARQL query}|inline text]]</nowiki>

With several alternate renderings (e.g. with a "gray" style, each tile having its own TMS/WMS server identified by a symbolic short name name, can be acting like an interwiki selects a foreign wiki server, and may support alternate languages; the default style would be configured on the wiki according to its own needs, this configuration including internally a possible "referer access key" when needed, when it generates the URL and GET POST parameters for HTTP(S) requests, or other user session cookies):
<nowiki>[[Mapframe:gray:-122.3995399/37.8103264/13|{optional SPARQL query}|frame|right|200x200px|alt=alt text|caption]]</nowiki>
<nowiki>[[Mapframe:gray:fr:-122.3995399/37.8103264/13|{optional SPARQL query}|frame|right|200x200px|alt=alt text|caption]]</nowiki>

We could also add some markers using some "parameter=value" after "Mapframe:x/y/z".

It should be also compatible with the "FULLURL:" syntax to create links with custom inline content (not just the basic plain-text description): we could use the generated link (that goes to the same separate page) as the target of the rendering of a static [[Image:]] (in its "|link=*" parameter) [[User:Verdy p|Verdy p]] ([[User talk:Verdy p|talk]]) 22:01, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
:Thanks {{FlowMention|Evad37}}. The function looks like it is working well in these templates. Do you know why English Wikipedia hasn't adopted mapframe more enthusiastically? At present en.wiki has fewer than 2,000 mapframe maps—compared to tens of thousands on some other wikis (and more than 160k on ca.wiki) . Is it, for example, because en.wiki users developed more effective workarounds prior to our recent mapframe release? Or a lack of information? Or is there something else that is causing deployment there to go slowly? [[User:JMatazzoni (WMF)|JMatazzoni (WMF)]] ([[User talk:JMatazzoni (WMF)|talk]]) 01:23, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
:{{FlowMention|JMatazzoni (WMF)}} My insights from editing on the English Wikipedia for a few years is that en.wiki seems to move more cautiously compared to other Wikimedia projects. I would mostly attribute this to a more established community of editors who are fine with the status-quo. You could say the same thing about Flow talk pages, Wikidata infoboxes, and VisualEditor. All are examples of technologies that en.wiki hadn't made default. At the moment, these maps are opt-in only, as they still have some major flaws (like not being app accessible). Once these changes have been addressed, it will likely be changed to opt-out. Until that time, it is being rolled out on an article by article basis. [[User:Daylen|Daylen]] ([[User talk:Daylen|talk]]) 04:46, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
:{{ping|JMatazzoni (WMF)}} I think a part of it has been the lack of any obvious way to easily add maps en-masse to articles (at least prior to <nowiki>{{Infobobox mapframe}}</nowiki> existing). You can't just go round with AWB and quickly/easily add {{tag|mapframe}} tags -- there might not be any data on Wikidata or any linked features on OSM; plus coordinates and zoom have to be specified for each use, otherwise the static thumbnail map just shows northern Africa and southern Europe (and/or a very low zoom level) when the page is saved ([[phab:T193455]]). Of course, it doesn't help that there are whole classes of articles where OSM data just can't be used ([[phab:T156433]]), and even for cases where it can be used, you may have to wait 24 or so hours for any new/updated OSM data to show up ([[phab:T137939]]).
:<nowiki>{{Infobobox mapframe}}</nowiki> fixes some of this, enough to be used in an automated way just by looking at the transcluding page's Wikidata item... but it is relatively new and will take time to become more widely used. Particularly in widely-used and protected templates, where non-trivial changes require discussion. As more and more templates start using <nowiki>{{infobobox mapframe}}</nowiki>, the number of mapframe maps should increase quite a bit. Particularly if used in more of an "opt-out" rather than "opt-in" way.
:Plus there's the restriction on Commons only accepting public domain/CC0 geoJSON data ([[phab:T179440]]) (though there is a workaround for CC-BY-SA compatible geoJSON, as that can be stored as wikitext and transcluded).
:Another reason for the slow adoption would be a lack of any urgency, as existing image-based map alternatives work are basically "good enough", and have widespread usage across many infoboxes.
:And finally, maybe just a lack of coordination between editors interested in maps, with such editors perhaps more interested in their own few favourite articles/topic areas rather than spreading mapframes across the site as a whole. [[User:Evad37|Evad37]] ([[User talk:Evad37|talk]]) 17:19, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
:The [https://el.wikipedia.org/wiki/?curid=357199 greek "Infobox building]" is already displaying kartographer maps in hundrends of articles, as points from property P625. Using the tag instead of a long chain of other templates and modules.
:Example: https://el.wikipedia.org/wiki/%CE%95%CF%81%CE%BC%CE%B9%CF%84%CE%AC%CE%B6 [[User:Geraki|Geraki]] ([[User talk:Geraki|talk]]) 07:25, 8 August 2018 (UTC)
:{{FlowMention|Geraki}} The English Wikipedia doesn't use Wikidata for infobox data. That is why (I would assume) all the extra code is required on enwiki. [[User:Daylen|Daylen]] ([[User talk:Daylen|talk]]) 19:12, 8 August 2018 (UTC)
:{{ping|Geraki}} That is an option, but there are benefits to using <nowiki>{{infobox mapframe}}</nowiki>. This template will also show shapes and lines, if they are defined on OSM, and can hide the marker image in such cases (since it isn't really appropriate for e.g. roads which don't exist at a single point). It can also automatically calculate an appropriate zoom level if given a length or area. And it allows for a more standardised mapframe experience between infoboxes by specifying default frame width, height, and colours. Plus it is easier for less technically-capable editors to use, since they don't have to know the exact JSON/syntax for the tags, since its just a template that takes parameters.
:{{ping|Daylen}} That's not actually correct, there's plenty of infoboxes at [[w:en:Category:Templates using data from Wikidata]]; see also [[w:en:Wikipedia:Wikidata#Appropriate_usage_in_articles|the various RfC conclusions]]. As I explained above and on [[w:en:Template talk:Infobox building]], it does fetch coordinates from Wikidata. [[User:Evad37|Evad37]] ([[User talk:Evad37|talk]]) 01:50, 9 August 2018 (UTC)
:I was referring to the fact that the elwiki link included above used Wikidata exclusively for the infobox. As such, extra code is required on enwiki, due to consensus against using Wikidata as the automatic provider of all infobox data, from a Village Pump discussion. [[User:Daylen|Daylen]] ([[User talk:Daylen|talk]]) 05:16, 9 August 2018 (UTC)
:{{FlowMention|Daylen}} I am sorry for my post not being clear: If you check the code you will see that the use of Wikidata is not mandatory. It is used ''only'' if there are no local parameters set.
:<nowiki>{{infobox building|latidude=40|longitude=23}}</nowiki> would use these values instead of Wikidata. In fact if you remove the WD feature the code would be more simple.
:{{FlowMention|Evad37}} I don't dispute that <nowiki>{{infobox mapframe}}</nowiki> has a lot of features. The question was how to display maps using another infobox (building), in this case not with bad results since a building is not the same with road (it is ok to display it with a pushpin). Editors who use it don't have to deal with any tag syntax. Eventually, something like infobox mapframe will come in place, but it needs things to settle and a lot of study (Wikidata modules have differences across Wikipedias).
The description says the " code will insert a simple interactive map ... with the ability to maximize it by either double-clicking the map or clicking the icon in the right corner". I find that the map maximizes on a single click. I see this behaviour for the examples on this help page and on the English language wiki.

However, if you edit the pages and use show preview the maps behave as described, with the single click gaining focus and allowing the map to be used interactively within the page. The correct behaviour is also seen on the test2 wiki. [[User:Jts1882|Jts1882]] ([[User talk:Jts1882|talk]]) 06:35, 8 August 2018 (UTC)
== Vandalism on OpenStreetMap ==

{{FlowMention|JMatazzoni (WMF)}} It looks like Kartographer is going to be pulled from enwiki infoboxes, as vandals have discovered that they can bypass page protections by vandalizing the information on OpenStreetMap. As OpenStreetMap is not a sister projects, admins are having to create new accounts on the service and learn how it works in order to fix these incidents. For example, on the Empire State Building map, it was changed to show the words “Jewtropolis” over Manhattan and the phrase “INSIDE JOB” over lower Manhattan. More details are shared on [[:en:Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#Help_-_Sneaky_Vandalism!|the Village Pump discussion]]. :This has been reported on Phrabricator [[phab:T201772]]. Maps were temporarily disabled from Infobox building, but that was undone after Module:Mapframe had a hack added to prevent maps with coords around Manhattan from displaying. == Bug(?): Embedded map preview within an article does not render ==
{{Archive top|status=resolved}}

'''Issue'''

The map preview within a page will sometimes show a blank white box. The full screen button and bottom-right attribution text is still visible. The map renders correctly when the user opens the full screen mode.

'''How to reproduce'''

No idea on what causes this, but it will sometimes appear after making an edit to the page that contains the map. The problem persists across different browsers and machines, suggesting it may be a bug on the wiki-side.

'''Workaround'''

Make an edit that breaks the Kartographer map (such as delete a parenthesis), then revert. This normally clears the problem. == Issue: Transcluded maps will go blank when changing the content of <mapframe> ==
{{Archive top|status=resolved}}

'''Problem:'''

When using the <nowiki><mapframe> tag in a template, any changes made to the map data (i.e. data within the <mapframe>...</mapframe></nowiki> tags) will cause any transcluded instances of the map to go blank. While the map can still be viewed when clicked on, the small preview window is blank.

'''How to reproduce:'''

*Create a template page (such as a template sandbox [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template%3ATemplate_sandbox]) that contains the <nowiki><mapframe> tag. (e.g. The San Francisco museums example at </nowiki>[[Help:Extension:Kartographer#<mapframe>_usage]]
*Create a page that transcludes the template with this map
*Make an edit to the content of the <nowiki><mapframe> tag (e.g. change marker-size from "large" to "medium")</nowiki>
*Reload the page that transcludes the template, the map will now appear blank on this page. [[User:NeoGeneric|NeoGeneric]] ([[User talk:NeoGeneric|talk]]) 12:41, 17 August 2018 (UTC)
:That doesn't sound right, but I'm afraid I can't reproduce. Here's an example on English Wikipedia using the Template:Mapframe. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:CKoerner_(WMF)/sandbox] I think this might be something where it can take a few minutes to generate a thumbnail. == OSM mapshape ==

<nowiki>Can one just get the actual coordinates of a mapshape from OSM via Wikidata and only that as text (nothing else)? The basic reason is that I have been comparing several hundred positions against various mapshapes (polyons) to see if those positions are within or outside that shape in order to make some selections as POIs. It would make things a bit easier than having to create that information by hand. :<nowiki>Thank you for your response! -- I was originally thinking of the possibility of using a Lua module to access Wikidata/OSM and retrieve it that way... I do remember some time ago downloading by hand from OSM but forgot how I did it lol. It just seemed a nice idea to be able to do something like that. Some OSM entries have a Wikidata ID which links it to Wikidata. On Wikivoyage we use Kartographer which accesses Wikidata's matching OSM (an external process of sorts) and used to create shapes, rail lines etc. on a map. Again -- thank you for your response - I will take a look at Overpass - Best wishes. -- ~~~~ </nowiki> [[User:Matroc|Matroc]] ([[User talk:Matroc|talk]]) 09:02, 22 September 2018 (UTC)
Hello, everybody,

I'm trying to discover what is going on with mapframe maps on this article: [[w:pt:Lista de governadores das unidades federativas do Brasil (2015–2019)|Lista de governadores das unidades federativas do Brasil (2015–2019)]]. It's blank, no matter what I try to do to solve. The query is correct, it returns the right amount of items (27 states). Some time ago one person changed the P31 of all states of Brasil on Wikidata, but it was reverted to the original P31, I'm not sure if has influence or not. Can anyone give me some light on that? Thanks! [[User:Ederporto|Ederporto]] ([[User talk:Ederporto|talk]]) 14:58, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
:<nowiki>I don't do queries but I would hazard a guess that you are not getting the OpenStreetMap coordinates to create the shapes...
