== Announcing ‘Map Improvements 2018’ ==

Over the next four months, the WMF Collaboration team will be making improvements to mapping software ([[Extension:Kartographer|Kartographer]]) and related functions. The team’s engagement with maps was prompted in part by the overwhelming support the maps community gave the 2017 Community Wishlist proposal for [[metawiki:2017_Community_Wishlist_Survey/Miscellaneous/Kartographer_improvements|Kartographer Improvements]]. The project, which we’re calling [[Map improvements 2018|Map Improvements 2018]], is currently in its very early research and planning stages. It has a limited term and is scheduled to conclude at the end of June.

The immediate goals of the Map Improvements project are:
* To ensure that Kartographer and the associated maps technology stack are stable and can be easily maintained as maps gain a wider audience.

* To accomplish the two “main wishes” named in the Community Wishlist proposal, along with as many of the other wishes as are possible in the time provided. The main wishes are [[phab:T112948|T112948]], “All map location names should be shown in the user's language” (an extremely challenging but crucial job), and [[phab:T180907|T180907]], “Add zoom level 19.”
Goals that relate to extending maps to a wider audience—such as bringing mapframe functionality to English Wikipedia (as [[:en:Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)/Archive_159#Should_we_ask_for_mapframe_to_be_turned_on?|requested by RfC]]) and making sure that mapframe works properly on wikis that use Flagged Revisions—are also under serious consideration.

:You'e in luck. As part of the Collaboration Team's engagement with maps—[[Map improvements 2018|read about it on the project page]]—we're thinking now that it makes sense to release mapframe on all Wikipedias (except those that use Flagged Revisions, which causes problems with mapframe).
:I was just in the middle of writing up a consultation, which we'll be posting on as many wikis as we can get translations for. But in general, to answer your question, you shouldn't need to do anything. This feature will be coming to you and everyone else in late April or early May. == Maps in the language of your choice— try it out now on testwiki ==

You can now display maps in languages of your choice on testwiki. I made two pages to demonstrate the new features, on [[testwiki:Map_internationalization_examples|testwiki]] and [[test2wiki:Map_internationalization_examples|testwiki2]] (embedded maps on test2 are dynamic; those on test are static until you click to pop up an enlargement).

By default, internationalized maps display in the language of the wiki (which is English for the testwikis). So to experiment with these features, you’ll want to use the two new mapframe parameters we’ve added. Just insert them into your mapframe code.

* '''lang=”xx”''' Shows map labels in the language you specify with the short language codes used for each wiki.
* '''lang=“local”''' Shows map labels in the languages of the territory mapped (essentially opting out of internationalization).

Right now, internationalization works only with mapframe, not maplink (which should be working some time next week). You can read more about this new feature and how to use it on the [[Map improvements 2018#Project Updates|Map Improvements 2018 project page, under Updates]]. Our plan is to wait a week or two and assess user comments about the feature. At that point, we’ll decide whether to move forward with a general release or keep making fixes.

== Mapframe maps now work on English Wikipedia ==

English Wikipedians can now use the mapframe function to embed maps on right on a page. Mapframe was requested by the English community [[:en:Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)/Archive_159#Should_we_ask_for_mapframe_to_be_turned_on?|via RfC last year]] and the request was [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)/Archive_164#Turn_on_mapframe?_We%E2%80%99re_ready_if_you_are reconfirmed this spring]. If you you’re new to mapframe, this [[Help:Extension:Kartographer|Kartographer help page]] shows how to use it.

Expect more significant new features in the coming weeks, with the implementation of the long-awaited [[Map improvements 2018#April 18, 2018, Special Update on Map Internationalization|map internationalization features]]. After internationalization, maps will display in the content language of the wiki they’re published on. Until then, they will continue to display in the language of the territory mapped. == Pass template parameters to maplink and mapframe? ==

It seems that<code><nowiki><mapframe width="300" height="300" zoom="12" latitude="{{{lat|0}}}" longitude="{{{long|0}}}" text="{{{text|}}}" /></nowiki></code> is not possible.

Allowing template parameters in maplink and mapframe parameters and json content will make it easier for editors to include them in templates.

One can find a Wikidata ID and an article exists in the wiki you are working on that has the inormation you are looking for - that particular ID can be looked up and used as well. == Incorporate "group" and "show" parameters ==

# Wikivoyage has group and show parameters which I believer should be incorporated in mapframe and maplink for all. If group is added avoid somehow group names such as: Group: {"type":"ExternalData","service":"geoline","url":"<nowiki>https://maps.wikimedia.org/geoline?getgeojson=1&ids=Q55</nowiki><nowiki>","properties":{"fill":"#555555","fill-opacity":0.5,"stroke":"#000000","stroke-width":1,"stroke-opacity":1,"title":""}}? Upon examination it appears to me that Kartographer extension has been changed in early May and Wikivoyage maps are now displaying the ugly group name as shown above in the info box for lack of a better name. In addition, these 2 parameters allow some extra flexibility as well when creating maplinks and markers. At one point, Wikidata ID(s) were also shown in legend of a map.</nowiki>
# The small information box found on Wikivoyage maps (top left) should be also be included on maps - lists groups etc. This allowed users to select or deselect elements for display. Hopefully this feature will not disappear.

:Wikivoyage uses the group and show parameters... This allows for multiple mapframes on an article page. Using these parameters allows to display selections (or all groups) on different mapframes. When used in a maplink - these can be displayed on a mapframe using group and show. If the maplink is used as a marker one just doesn't go to a position on a blank popup map but rather a popup map with other points etc. being displayed as well. Maplinks can be placed on a page but hidden from actual page display by using text="" class="no-icon". This type of maplink could be a point or polygon etc. belonging to a particular group and displayed in either a mapframe or then popup map is displayed.

== Map internationalization launched everywhere—and embedded maps now live on 276 Wikipedias ==

As of today, interactive (Kartographer) maps no longer display in the language of the territory mapped; instead, you’ll read them in the content language of the wiki where they appear—or in the language their authors specify (subject to availability of multilingual data). In addition, mapframe, the feature that automatically embeds dynamic maps right on a wiki page, is now live on most Wikipedias that lacked the feature. (Not included in the mapframe launch are [[phab:T191583|nine Wikipedias]] that use the stricter version of Flagged Revisions).

If you you’re new to mapframe, this [[MW:Help:Extension:Kartographer|Kartographer help page]] shows how to get started putting dynamic maps on your pages. If you’d like to read more about map internationalization: this [[MW:Map improvements 2018#April 18, 2018, Special Update on Map Internationalization|Special Update]] explains the feature and its limitations; [[MW:Map improvements 2018#April 25, 2018, You can now try out internationalization (on testwiki)|this post]] and [[MW:Map improvements 2018#April 26, 2018: OSM name data quirks and the uses of lang=“local”|this one]] describe the uses of the new parameter, lang=”xx”, which lets you specify a map’s language. And [[test2wiki:Map_internationalization_examples#East_Asia,_without_internationalization_(using_lang="local")|here are some example maps]], to illustrate the new capabilities.

:@[[User:Roan Kattouw (WMF)|<bdi>Roan Kattouw (WMF)</bdi>]], @[[User:Mooeypoo|Mooeypoo]], at Wikivoyage we have one mapframe in the beginning of the article followed by multiple maplinks for individual objects (places of interest). Take [[:voy:ru:Шанхай|this page]] as an example. The map icon at the beginning of the page is a mapframe set to lang=en, so it shows English street names, which is good. Then the red boxes 1-5 are individual objects defined by the maplink. If I click on them, I still see the map in Chinese, because the lang parameter has not been defined (and no Russian labels are available). My question is: how can I define lang= for all these maplinks (on a given page) globally? I don't really want to write lange=en every time, because a typical Wikivoyage article has between 30 and 100+ such maplinks.
:PS. Another solution I can think of is changing language fallback scheme for a given wiki. In other words, define that Russian Wikivoyage will always choose the languages in the following sequence: language given by the lang= parameter --> Russian (language of the wiki) --> English --> local. :Right now we don't have a way to define fallbacks on a per-wiki basis, only on a per-language basis. So we can set the fallback for Russian to English, but there are two problems with that. One is that this would affect all other Russian-language wikis, not just Russian Wikivoyage.
:The other is that some place name labels in OpenStreetMap have a "local" name but no Russian name, even if the local name is in Russian. In that situation our software thinks there is no Russian name, and it might display an English name for a place in Russia. There's a proposal to fix that in the OSM data, but that will be a slow process and the OSM community hasn't yet agreed on how to handle it, so for now we've been telling people to fix these cases one by one as they spot them. Because of this issue, we are being careful with fallbacks in the meantime, because we don't want to show English names for places in Russia to Russian-speaking users.
:So we can add a fallback to English if there is community consensus for it, but we want people to be aware of the issue with English names, and to be ready to fix those in OSM. Then there's the issue that this affects all wikis that speak the same language, which we haven't given much thought to yet. {{FlowMention|CKoerner (WMF)}}, what are your thoughts on that? == Should your language change its map language fallbacks? ==

Since we launched map internationalization [[Map improvements 2018#May 9, 2018: Map internationalization launched everywhere—and embedded maps now live on 276 Wikipedias|earlier this week]], a number of users have asked about the map language-fallback schemes and how communities can change their fallbacks (e.g., [[Topic:Ubzgfi8j4bdsqe9p|this exchange]]).

In response, I added a post today to the Map Improvements project page that [[Map improvements 2018#May 11, 2018: Should your wiki change its map fallback language?|goes into detail about map language fallbacks]]. It explains how to request a change and gives an example of why some less widely translated languages, at least, might want to consider adding to their fallbacks.

== Map jumps continents between Preview and Save ==

I'm having a problem displaying a map generated by a <mapframe> which links to an [[w:OpenStreetMap|OSM]] map via a wikidata id.

I created a Talk subpage at [[w:Talk:Anatolia/Maps]] to use as an illustration of a message I was going to add at the Rfc going on at [[w:Talk:Anatolia]]. This subpage has four maps using the Extension. All four maps show images of Anatolia (Turkey), with slightly varying zooms (4 or 5) and different aspect ratios. The first three are all simple, straight <mapframe> type maps, but the fourth one is a <mapframe> which links to an [[w:OpenStreetMap|OSM]] map that has a wikidata property, and points to wikidata's Central Anatolia item. This fourth map is not displaying correctly—most of the time—but sometimes it does.

The first three always display correctly. However the fourth one which links to a Central Anatolia map created at [[w:OpenStreetMap]] ([https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/2094194#map=6/38.178/33.069 here]) and is linked through the OSM wikidata property Q155526, and links to "Cenral Anatolia Region" as [[d:Q155526]] is acting flakey.

The first three maps all look fine, both in Preview, and after Saving. However, two funny things are going on with the fourth map, that links through OSM and Wikidata:

# I usually have to hit "Preview" button twice or more, in order to visualize it. The first time, I usually just get a gray rectangle for the fourth one (the other three above it are always fine).
# After I hit "Publish", the fourth map displays, but it's no longer of Anatolia region (Turkey) anymore, instead, it shows a section of northern Africa centered on Algeria, and the containing box is twice as tall as it was.

If you look at the 4th map by viewing the page [[w:Talk:Anatolia/Maps]], that's probably what you will see now, i.e. Algeria. But if you edit the page, and hit the "Show Preview" button a sufficient number of times, it will probably show Algeria several times in a row in Preview, and then at some point it will jump back to showing a map that looks just like the top one of Anatolia, except that the central portion will be shaded, matching the OSM map showing Central Anatolia shaded. (The last time I tried this, I had to give up and Cancel out once, then try again and "Preview" seven times before it "jumped" back to Anatolia, and showing the shaded border created by the OSM map.)

What is going on here? Why is it jumping back to Antatolia in Preview, but only rarely, and why, when I save the page, does it always show Algeria? :It can be done using the template OSM Location Map, which is on en and now various other wikipedias. As well as text and dots and shapes, suitable transparent map overlays can be added from a commons file. This uses the common notation "x/y/z" used with OSM rendering tools or in URLs, without needing to name paramters, as these 3 values are always required (or possibly the missing "/z" can also take a default value such as "/13", suitable for frequent use to locate cities in their district and basic roads).

(we could still add other options with "*=*" parameters, like in images, such as a capotion, or alt-text, or parameters for adding/removing optional navigation buttons, or specifying a lang=* parameter if we want a precise language or its fallbacks). That wiki extension would also support fallback rendering as a single image thumbnail (e.g. using preferences, or browser capabilities if they can't use javascript), by adding a new media type plugin to the thumbail generator.

Like images, there should be coherent default sizes also matching user preferences. This would make replacing static images by mapframes more easily (warning! we should have the same kind of decorations with identical same metrics for the framing). Text-only rendering would render the caption, the map could then be made partly accessible with the description.

This template will also show shapes and lines, if they are defined on OSM, and can hide the marker image in such cases (since it isn't really appropriate for e.g. roads which don't exist at a single point). It can also automatically calculate an appropriate zoom level if given a length or area. And it allows for a more standardised mapframe experience between infoboxes by specifying default frame width, height, and colours. I find that the map maximizes on a single click. I see this behaviour for the examples on this help page and on the English language wiki.

However, if you edit the pages and use show preview the maps behave as described, with the single click gaining focus and allowing the map to be used interactively within the page.
