The book uploader is a proposed project to make some customizations on the Extension:UploadWizard targeted to fulfill the needs of the Wikisource community. This is a proposal part of the Wikisource vision development.

Current situation

When a user wants to upload a book it has to go through steps thought for the upload of pictures, therefore there are no specific fields for book data. Moreover, the user has to create an "Index:" page for the file with exactly the same data as in Commons, since the data is not propagated.

Proposed project

While the Narrowing focus is in force, no big code changes can be undertaken since they won't be reviewed, therefore the following project is proposed as a wmflabs (or other external server) software:

  • There is a screen that lets users choose between importing a book from the Internet Archive/other sources or upload it from the local computer.
  • If the user chooses to import it from the Archive, then he is directed to this tool.
  • If the user chooses to import it from the local computer he is given the opportunity to import metadata from external sources (OCLC, Open Library, Library of Congress, etc). There is already a tool that can import MARC data (see MARCsman). The user can review this data manually.
  • This data is then forwarded to the UploadWizard as a Campaign (some changes might be needed to transfer the extra data fields).
  • Additionally at the end of the upload process an "Index:" page might be created either by the upload wizard or the external tool with the book data.
  • Once wikidata is deployed on sister projects, the UploadWizard could create a wikidata item for the book. The "index:" page structure would need to be modified to handle both wikidata linking and static data (as it is now).

Risks

  • The changes needed on the UploadWizard still need code review.
  • Wikidata is still not deployed on sister projects
